[Canola] Released : Canola2 beta9 Update. Please unninstall beta10, disable extras-devel

Very important : Disable the extras devel repository

Hello everyone! After a huge break we are back with a new release. Actually this is more a fix to update all the libraries as we are officially releasing the new EFL based Carman as well.

This version is not Beta10 yet due to the instability caused to some core components while testing the beta10. So we decided to step back a little release just a updated for the new versions of the library, improved a little bit the core build system and for sure we debugged a little bit some core features. But honestly speaking no major changes on this version.

The main changes are coming in beta10, that will be starting next week, and also we are preparing the code and servers to receive the full source code, as our plan is to release Canola totally open source in beta10. Maybe it time to stop calling it beta.

So we apologize again to those expecting beta10, but we prefer not to release it instead of releasing a buggy version.

Stay tuned for more news, confirmed feature set for beta10 and the new website for the opensource release!

Very important : Disable the extras devel repository

It is very important that you disabled the extras devel repository. The extras devel is a developer grade repository meant to test highly advanced code in early stages, this means that it can break your apps if you mix stuff. So if you know what you are doing fine :) but if you have doubts it is better to just disabled it and prevent errors between newer version (beta10) files and the beta9 update files.

- Updated Enlightenment Foundation Libraries to SVN revision 36098.
- Adapted Canola code to the new version of the EFL.
- Updated light media scanner to the newest version (0.2.0).
- Adapted Canola code to the new version of LMS.
- Completely rewritten image thumbnailer which runs as a separate process.
- Updated youtube plugin to the new Youtube API.
- Small fix on the process of creation of user's ~/.canola directory.

Coming soon:

- The Canola theme maker webservice: you can upload your sliced images and we will compile and generate the installable theme for you
- A new upnp backend, that will allow the control point features you have been requesting
- Improved scanner / Cover art download system

How To install Guide
Please try to follow this, to avoid losing your data (.canola folder will be deleted if you use canola cleanup)

If you are running Canola beta9 (the regular release) and didn't try the beta10:
a. Please make sure you don't have the extras-devel repository enabled and...
b. just go to the application manager and update. Everything will work fine.

If you are running Canola beta10 :
a. Unninstall Canola beta10
b. Remove the extras-devel repository
c. Update / refresh the app catalogue
d. Install canola beta9 from it normally

If you are facing problems after doing that you can run Canola cleanup
but this will kill your .canola folder (your preferences, podcasts etc)
so you have 2 options :
a. backup manually your folder before runing canola cleanup
b. backup using the system utility for that.

We will improve the canola cleanup to add the option to preserve data, but this app was meant to clean really hard problems that could have damaged the structure of the .canola folder and thus prevents canola from working.

Best Regards,

Canola team

I've downgraded & now get a pop-up "Local drive is out of space. Going to exit Canola" & it quits. I currently have 41.5M free on root & almost a gig free on each of the internal & external cards on my N810. No messages when I run it via command line, same problem. HELP!

Canola is not what it supposed to be at the beginning of the year. The tablet software development is standstill. I see what the iphone became in one year and what the tablets are in three and I cry. I'm so disappointed...

I for one am not so quick to jump on that bandwagon. Give these guys some time, they'll sort it out. What more can you ask for free software & free tech support? :).

Re: Released : Canola2 beta9 Update. Please unninstall beta10, disable extras-devel

Hi Guys,

Can you please me inform how did you downgraded? so we can replicate the issue here? Did you used the canola cleanup / cleanup from EXTRAS (not extras devel)
made sure you disabled extras devel etc?

This issues are clearly looking like conflict of versions.

As for the problems : I am really sorry. But as everyone knows this is a free software and we were trying to get people working (paid) on the software and they *** up the whole software. As I am really worried with the users and their opinions it was a painful decision but I decided to drop all the beta10 development done so far (a couple of months) because the situation was way worst than we could have imagined.

Luckly, I entered a personal fight and with the help of my boss got authorization to bring back in the team Barbieri and Ulisses, the main creators of Canola, so I would just ask a little bit of your patience that things will be back on track quite fast, and we have the plans up to 10 months of development for canola2 and ofcourse the main critics / bugs said here are top priority.

I kind of feel the same as said here, that the tablet software is "kind" of stopped, but We are at least trying to do our part. There's a couple of nice plans, but we are only 6 and a half people working on canola (now) it was way less before. So it's not fair to charge more than we can do, and we do that for free. We are going to deploy the full source, but being honest.. I don't believe the tablet devs will pick up and help it. Anyhow We are following a "dream" of having a "Canola2" non beta release where the basic features are rock solid and from there we are just going to make sure things are clear and clean for the users.

Sorry again for the mess on installation and uninstallation issues but let's be honest : the app installer also doesn't help. People do have several repositories, and even when you write on red, that extras-devel and extras conflict, they don't disable it. We will do our best, but this takes times and we need .. actually that's the only thing we ask from you in return : information when giving feedback.
Saying it doesn't work is not good. Say what you did, say your repositories say what happens if you type canola on xterm.

That will speed up everything

BR

Downgraded to Beta9...

comments...stuttering video, aspect ratio in framed screen is off, but is correct in fullscreen.

Re: Released : Canola2 beta9 Update. Please unninstall beta10, disable extras-devel

Rdcinhou :
(the stuttering video we have been talking about it quite many times: it's mplayer embedded mode in specific? versions is worse. unfortunately this we cannot do nothing but wait mplayer to improve) -
anyhow the important part is the aspect ratio:
So it's stretching on the non-fullscreen on youtube ? is that what you mean?
sorry for asking if it's dumb... but it's just to make sure.. (because it was not supposed to change from beta9 to this)

Thanks Handful for all the hard work, and for fighting our corner. It's hard to ditch hard work that someone has completed, which is no good, or takes you down the wrong road - been through something similar at work myself.

Only thing is I managed to lose my canola DB when running cleanup.

Also - is there any sign of a Video podcast plugin, as that would make my media live complete!

thanks

Hi Gary,

thanks for the support. In a free product those are the things that make us go ahead.

Anyhow : We are still having small issues uploading the packages, and we wanted to make sure things are solid on track to put the new plugins back on track as well.

To be really honest : to enabled video podcast is just to add a couple of lines in the podcast, it is just a matter of getting things in the line :)

Let me know if anything else goes wrong so we can fix it !

Handful don't get me wrong here: I *REALLY* appreciate the work you are doing with Canola. It is by far the best third-party app for the tablets and I love it.

But when I say I feel disappointed, I'm talking about the platform in general and its future. The tablet software development is dying and I feel very sad about that...

Re: Released : Canola2 beta9 Update. Please unninstall beta10, disable extras-devel

Hi amigokin,

Yes I got your message :) it was me also feeling little disappointed. I have been using the G1 phone, the IPhone and other linux products, and to be in the tablet for so long and not seeing a good evolution towards a great product makes me sad as well.

I wish we had more work force to do more things, for sure we could help the tablets a lot. BUT it doesn't depend on us :)

At least I can say that we are still doing work, the problem now is that our "paid" job focus changed a little bit to the future tablets (maemo5?) and that makes Canola suffers a little bit.

Re: Released : Canola2 beta9 Update. Please unninstall beta10, disable extras-devel

The aspect ratio problem is from multiple saved .flv files from various sources.

In the framed viewer window it seems to stretched to fit.

In full-screen view the aspect ratio is correct.

handful 2008-11-17 21:30

Re: Released : Canola2 beta9 Update. Please unninstall beta10, disable extras-devel

@rdcinhou : yeah, it doesn't matter the source, .flv files are only played through mplayer, and mplayer cannot determine the aspect ratio with one opening. Some apps are opening the file twice to make it right, we've sent the patch to fix this but it seems it's not fully fixed.

: /

anyhow thanks for letting us now, as we will try to push this fix again,

No, it can. It reports the size after opening and you can resize the video window accordingly without having to open the video twice. It works well. I'm doing it this way.

Okay, so I uninstalled the old version, but the latest version of canola is not installing--the application manager is saying that I'm missing liblightmediascanner0.

However, I put my tablet in red pill mode and it is showing that I already have (what looks like the correct version of) liblightmediascanner0 installed. Seems strange...

Hi Kling :

Did you disabled extras-devel after unninstalling beta10? It is needed that you have it disabled before installing the current version.

What you may be facing now is the conflict of development (extras-devel) package x official packages in extras.

If you do not have anything on your database (like podcasts etc) and want a fast solution, just run canola-cleanup and then install (making sure extras-devel is disabled)

It will work :) ... I hope :)

Hello FRZ :)

There's a user guide on the website :
http://openbossa.indt.org/canola2/using.html

That explains the basic of canola usage since it's launch.

The media library section :
http://openbossa.indt.org/canola2/using.html#mlib

Will show you how to add the folders to your media library
(this should be default we know, and it will be added in future versions)

But you need to mark (with a little v, by touching) the eyes on the folders / media cards name to get it scanned by canola, thus the music will show in your folders / media collection.

Finally :
http://openbossa.indt.org/canola2/using.html#playlist

This will show you how to use the simple on the move playlist, just click and hold a song to add it and then you can use the Playlist options in the song menu to access and play it. You are also able to save it and create new ones.

Hope this helps.

By the way :
Browse by folders in the music menu is in the bottom so you need to scroll the screen down a little bit :)

Thanks again handful & etrunko, I appreciate the responsiveness of you and the team.

Anyway, I figured out that the version of liblightmediascanner0 installed on my tablet refused to update to the latest version because it was associated with the Kulve ogg support package. So, I removed the Kulve package and Canola then installed without any problems.

However, I notice that my ogg files are not being indexed anymore. Is there something else that I am missing?

Hi,

I keep running into issues with cover art for my mp3s -

Had beta8 installed before the update, and I only have the stock Diablo catalogs enabled (Nokia, Nokia 3rd party, System Software, and maemo Extras).

I've uninstalled everything and have run canola-cleanup, rebooted, updated the software catalogs, etc... a few times, and still don't have luck with cover art for mp3s.

Any help debugging/troubleshooting the canola-tuning-plugin and cover art fetching and/or other setup would be greatly appreciated.

Edit: I've watched the Beta9/10 updates for a while with interest, and I never had Beta 10 installed (just upgraded from Beta8). If this post would make more sense in the Beta9 bug reports, please feel free to move it, but I just wanted to be clear that I've been watching the Beta9 update(s) with interest, crossing my fingers that cover art would work again with another update.

Thanks.

Wow, handful, that's really not a fun thing to have to go through. :( Canola, sadly, gets a lot of **** it doesn't deserve.

I hope you guys already know it, but it never hurts to be said twice, so I'll say again how much I appreciate the work INdT puts into Maemo. The tablets wouldn't be anywhere near where they are today without you guys. :)

I really hope the community comes out and surprises you by jumping right in and getting to work once the source is released, but, so far, its track record there hasn't been great. :(

Fresh install of Chinook and a Fresh install of Canola2-Beta9, and files will not play when you go into 'All Songs' or 'Random Song'. Song titles show up, but upon clicking one, it goes in to play the song, then pops up a window with 'File Not Found'. But going in under 'Browse by Folder' and then selecting the folder the songs are in, works. What gives?

I discovered it after installing Carman, and then uninstalling both with the Cleanup tool (which deleted both Carman and Canola, oddly) and upon reinstalling, discovered the problem. It used to work just fine.

I noticed the updated to C2B9 when it hit the repositories and I must say that I am very impressed with the current level of responsiveness. The transition effects from the main screen icons (movie, music, etc.) are fantastic and there's an overall snappiness that wasn't in previous versions and it's very welcome. This is some of the best software I've used on the tablet, very polished and enjoyable. My only real issue at the moment (I haven't put this through it's paces to track all issues) is the start-up and shut-down speeds of the app. Is this due to library scanning upon start-up?

Keep up the great work guys! There are those that really appreciate the effort! :)

Hi Gorgon, yes it unfortunately still scanning the media for integrity. We added in beta10, but the rollback removed this.

We are adding it again, so if you mark on the settings the option to "Disable scan on startup" it really speeds up the whole process :)

Hi they will not appear in the youtube part, but you can add the folder where the videos are to the media scanner (settings -> media library - > media folders -> videos - mark the folder with the "eye with a V")

We need a little bit of more information :

Can you send us the log generated by the application installer? It says the reason why the install failed. Did you try enabling the "Maemo extras" repository in the application catalogue?

Go to the application installer,
hit the menu (the little icon in the title bar of the application)
and search for the application catalog option

once there the maemo extras will be disabled , try to enable it, refresh.

If your connection is ok, the refresh will be fine.. and canola will appear in the list of installable apps.

Try installing, if the error still happens you can find the log in the menu again (search for the option LOG) and send to us here the message.

This is probably by :

a. some connection problem
b. catalog conflict
c. proxy / any other filter in your connection.
