DIY Cheap MicroSD to RS-MMC converter in 15 minutes.
 

That's what I've done for my 'new' n770.
I bought cheapest Kingston's MicroSD card which came with two converters - MicroSD-MiniSD (needed for my n810) and 'spare' MicroSD-SD.
You can say that I should simply buy another RS-MMC 2GB card and forget all the trouble but - I needed this converter for n810 and... this was 1$ cheaper solution :)

First - I dissassembled MicroSD-SD converter - it's easy with sharp knife since it's not glued for this specific type.
Once You open one - You can see connectors fixed with little plastic bar.
Connectors are delicate so It's not good idea to throw away supporting plate (on the left).

The idea was to cut space for microsd card in this supporting part.
On photo below You can see connectors glued with UHU to cut supporting plate (glue between support and connector's plastic bar).

Below You can see how it looks from the other side.

Contacts need to be straightened and bent to the 'other side'.

Below it's a test - pins not bent to their final position.
As You can see - card placement is good enough.

Then - when making them more twisted - card locks itself in.
They are elastic spring contact so it's easy to push the card downward at it's end to get good connection at all contacts.

Now to position the card I cut a part of plastic from card's blister.
It's bit too thick though.

Now - glue this cover.

And for the final touch - isolate connectors using some transparent adhesive tape.

Voila.
I'm using Fanoush's high speed sdhc enabled kernel so any available MicroSD card will do.
It's bit thicker than RSMMC card - mainly because of my transparent plastic cover.
I was able to place it in n770's slot with no problem from the first time.
Of'course one can say that it's not elegant and doesn't survive many plugin cycles but c'mon - it's cheap, fast and with nothing to loose as long as You dont short connector pins.

Brilliant! With a little soldering between the pins and card, that connection could become very permanent and reliable. Although it might have to be a pretty low wattage soldering iron.

Believe me, spring contact form very good connection. Not all contacts are needed in fact but I choose not to select them.
I considered soldering at the first thougts but there's no need for damaging gold plated contacts on the card itself - at least for me.
I even considered direct card to pcb soldering in case I don't find less brutal solution.

Great! I had only planned to find out whether the microsd-sd adapter could be utilized for 770 RS-MMC slot, so thanks for saving me time. Now it is time to search for cheap microSD cards:)

I'd assume that you'd install it in the same way as you'd do it on an MMC. The kernel is installed on flash memory, so as long as you use Fanoush's SDHC kernel it will boot fine.

I'm just ordered myself an 8GB Class-6 MicroSDHC from 7dayshop.com for just under £11. It comes with an adapter, too. Looking forward to the upgrade!

IMO the most tricky part is to maintain support for gold connector plates of disassembled converter.
That's why I didn't cut this one from edge to edge - I've left these little plastic forms that supported connector plates in oryginal design.
Maybe it would help to glue plates at their's back to these supporting plastic stands.

I haven't done this (I only have N800s :p), but I'd think adapters are cheap enough to be accounted disposable, so I'd solder the fingers to the microSD, then bend the whole thing up. But I do think your way is a very elegant hack -- and it requires neither solder nor skills therewith.

Done it! I managed to mess it up the first time, so had to buy a new MicroSDHC card and adaptor. Luckily, 7dayshop had them reduced.

I didn't use the piece of blister packaging to seal the card up as it seemed too big for the slot on the 770. I got one of the guys where I work to solder the pins on and, once I'd made sure that the card still worked in a card reader of mine, I superglued everything together.

Don't forget that, if you're using an external card reader, you'll need to either cover the read/write switch gap on the side of the card or modify your card reader to ignore the switch. I did the latter - I can't remember the last time I actually used the read-write switch on the side of an SD card, and the reader was only £5.

Then, by using the 770 as a card reader alongside another card reader, I was able to copy the partitions across with gparted. I already had fanoush's SDHC kernel installed, but it was the 24Mhz version (for some reason the 48Mhz one seemed to crash more with my old 2GB MMC card). So, after installing the card, I upgraded to the 48Mhz version.

I'm really impressed with the speed difference. Maemo Mapper is so much faster than it was, and generally the tablet feels more responsive.

If only my 770 had an attached keyboard that isn't the touch-screen one, it would be a perfect unit. It's the only thing that makes me miss my Psion 3a.
