UKMP 1.8x is out

Long time in the making bears fruit. I'm publishing ukmp 1.8 now. It's beta, I have worked today six or seven hours on it, which is probably more I've done to it for a few months.

New ukmp is portrait mode player that works on all n800/n810 devices without the need for rotation support.

The interface is nice, but I couldn't use it properly. When I removed my SDHC card it started correctly and listed the few preinstalled MP3s (those in ~/.sounds). But when I inserted my SDHC with 8 GB of MP3s and Oggs and FLACs, it crashed while scanning the tags. The same happens with earlier releases of UKMP, too. I suspect the tag scanner isn't very robust. Is there a good way to find out at which file the crash occurs?

Hi Kontorri

Thank you for that. It was in my Automatic Updates a few days ago. After it was installed I briefly tried it out. I love the portrait mode, minimal interface and it pulls in the album covers beautifully.

However, practically all of my N800 music is in ogg files and the old distortion issues remained.

Then, in the interim, my OS2008 system has been automatically updated a couple of times and now stands at v 4.2008.36.5, quite what it was a few days ago I am not sure.

Now, when I select an ogg file to play, the device locks up and needs a hard restart. However if I select an mp3 then it all is ok and it plays fine.

In order to try and deal with this, I installed ogg-support v 0.7 but with the same result. Then I installed ogg-support-lightmediascanner v 0.7 but didn’t help either.

I find it astonishing that Nokia does not include ogg vorbis in the list of supported audio formats
http://europe.nokia.com/A4579471.

Initially, when you first gave us UKMP, it was able to play my files provided ogg-support was installed but that facility stopped quite a while back.

Is there anything else that I can do or am I stuck with my ogg files being unplayable?

You can run ukmp from command line and see where it crashes. How many albums of music do you have?

I can try out the ogg support. I'm using playbin these days and not building the pipelines manually. I suppose that is the reason for oggs not working.

And to be fair, I don't like ogg as a standard, however free it is. The metadata handling of it is entriely flawed and it has never worked as it should have on any computers and os that I have owned (except mplayer, in which everything always works well).

Anyway, back to the issue. I'll check out the ogg support if I could hack in something quickly.

Re: UKMP 1.8x is out

I just tried it out with 1 gig of music on a card and it managed to display the album covers. I understand that you press an album to get the song but it doesn't seem to work.

I had no ear phones plugged in, should it have played through the speakers?
How do you get to a menu system? I tried the menu button on the key pad and got nothing.
What do the curled corners at the top do?
Was mine a flawed install?

Re: UKMP 1.8x is out

There is no menu. Top right closes the app. Top left goes back to album list.
Audio playback works with and without speakers. If your music is all ogg files, then the reason is that apparently ogg playback isn't working on 1.83.

Re: UKMP 1.8x is out

Nope my music is MP3, MP4, AAC. Maybe it was still loading the music and I didn't give it enough time?

I will try again later. I like that your program has managed to support cover art.

So it doesn't support playlist?

Simple, efficient, clean, fast, and just a pleasure to use. Thank you Konttori for providing us with this!

One tiny problem, swedish characters, å, ä, ö aren't displayed in song/album-names. I can live with it though, most of the music on my n800 isn't swedish.

The åäö issue is bugging me as well. So, I want to fix it as much as you do.

Rassilon, it has queue mode, so you can create a one-time playlist, but it doesn't support pre-created playlists.

hi i'm having problems with my python that are preventing this from working if i run ukmp from the terminal i get this error

/home/user # ukmp

import MediaCenter
File "/usr/bin/MediaCenter.py", line 23, in ?
import pygame, os, sys

but if i try to apt-get pygame, it says it is already installed

/home/user # apt-get install python2.5-pygame
Reading package lists... Done

python2.5-pygame is already the newest version.

I suspect you want to fix it a lot more than I do... I'm actually quite happy having you do it for me! ;)

Seriously though, it's a really neat app. i totally agree with you on your concept of a really simple music-player that's quick to navigate and doesn't make you jump through hoops to get to your songs. Again, thank you.

Re: UKMP 1.8x is out

Hey, just my 2 cents. The automatic cover finder hates my albums, even the commercial ones (most of my music is stuff by local bands). Can you make a easy way to browse the memory cards for artwork, instead of automatically downloading?

konttori 2008-11-30 15:45

Re: UKMP 1.8x is out

You can copy your own artwork to the mmc cards covers folder and replace the existing art with yours.

For python, I recomend installing ukmp from the downloads maemo org link:
https://maemo.org/downloads/product/OS2008/ukmp/

which will draw in python-runtime package that has everything needed to run ukmp.

Re: UKMP 1.8x is out

Is there any way to specify the folders that UKMP looks for, it seems to keep picking up the audio files for freeciv. Also what audio formats does UKMP support, most of my collection is in AAC, and I don't want to have to go through my collection to convert tracks to mp3 (as I would have to with Canola)

Re: UKMP 1.8x is out

no chance to pick files it takes. I'll have a look at the ogg and aac issues when I have some time to work on ukmp again.

Can you please tell me how to do it?
Thank you.

Can you take a look at the application manager logs to see what is causing it to not uninstall ukmp?

How could the display be rotated 180 degrees?

pycage 2009-01-08 07:54

Re: UKMP 1.8x is out

I was wondering why the UKMP .deb file was so big and did a dpkg -L on it. Some things I noticed:

There are hidden files packaged that most likely are not needed, e.g. ._.png or similar.

Your package installs a file /usr/share/pixmaps/bg.png. I think it's not so good to put a file with such a generic non-app-related name in there. When UKMP is installed no other package having a file of the same path could be installed due to conflicts. Or Nokia may choose to ship a file /usr/share/pixmaps/bg.png in future versions of maemo or in a SSU-upgrade. This could really break things.

I'm rotating everything in the application itself, so there is no trickery needed (nor support from X, although that would be much better of course).

I agree it's not a good name. Also, thanks for the tip on the ._.png. I'll take a look at them (they are probably osx relic files).

Re: UKMP 1.8x is out

Can you add a rotation option in the next version? I like the vertical display, but I'd prefer to have it 180 degrees from what it is currently so the hardware buttons are where I like them.

konttori 2009-01-13 06:28

Re: UKMP 1.8x is out

Hmm... I'll consider the inverted rotation.

Re: UKMP 1.8x is out

Hmm for some reason UKMP has trouble with this one band (Keane). I've tried scrubbing the tags in mp3tag v2.42 and readding them but it keeps showing them as symbols in UKMP. While it works fine in other media players (Youamp, mediabox, canola).

Using the mp3tag tool installed on my tablet to investigate said files it looks like various symbols are added. But if I examine same files, they don't show up.
