what is the best 3g phone for connection with the N800 ?

hello
I am looking for a 3g cellular phone to use it with my Great N800 device. I dont really care if the phone is good or bad, because I just want it to use as a cellular modem.
so I ask you, what is the best and fastest cellular phone for using with the N800 ?

thank you

I've got a Nokia 6680, but using it in USA T-Mobile Edge network. Yeah, I know, not as fast as 3G.

with T-Mobile, the best phone (the only phone) for 3g tethering is the SE TM506 flip phone.

I looked at the wiki list above, and for my Nokia 6680 phone, there's mention of a 3G adapter. I have no idea what this is and I haven't been able to find info on it. Can anyone elaborate?

I am currently using n958gb. But the best phone+ tablet combination would be

N810 + nokia 6650 on at&t with media net data plan which is just 15$/month

It is s60 so pim is taken care off. It has hspa 850/1900 which will give speeds of 1 mb/s via bluetooth connection on the n810.

check it out here http://www.amazon.com/Nokia-6650-Pho...8424056&sr=1-1

nokia e65 works for me:
* quad band GSM
* 3G
* bluetooth
* wifi
* usb connectivity
* microsd card to store files

nice, small, neat for use as a phone, and the tablet does all the heavy lifting.

I too am looking for a new 3G phone to use with my n800 and I appreciate seeing this topic revisted every once in awhile. I'm currently on AT&T but am considering tmobile in the Boston,MA area. I enjoyed my trusty but now dated nokia 6320, and would like to stay with a nokia bar or slider phone. The n95 may be overkill for me, though I would love to have it. The 6650 looks good, and I can probably survive a flip phone if I stay with AT&T.

T mobile now has 3G in Boston - anyone have recs on phones in their inventory? I'm not against going with an unlocked, but would like to consider other models in the lineup as I am unfamilar with most of the non nokia phones. Thanks!

N95 does not work with T-Mobile 3G due to a difference in frequency.

CDMA Moto Razr v3c worked very well on my N810. New HTC Touch Diamond (also CDMA) works well, but took a bit of fiddling to get it set up.

Both on the Telus network in Canada.

Thanks for the info. Its seems like I'll stick with AT&T. I'll go and play with a 6650 tomorrow and see how I like it. If I went the unlocked route I would like a nokia n79, which appears to be compatible with the ATT 3G freq. but its hard to find the right version and on nokia's website its still listed as a pre-order? Oh well, I wish US carriers could carry some of the better nokia phones!

I literally just went and bought a Sony-Ericsson TM506 today. It's the only 3G tmobile phone that supports both HSDPA(Faster than UTMS) and DUN tethering. I'm in the NE side of San Antonio, so T-Mo's 3g has been out here for a while.

After about three hours of messing with settings, I've finally gotten it to work.

T-Mo EDGE speeds: 26kbps download
T-Mo 3G speeds: 755kbps download

I don't know if the BT connection is the bottleneck here, but i can play youtube videos and stream vagalume now, whereas on EDGE it was basically a waste.

Also, first post!

I'm surprised - in NYC I've clocked 70kbps on EDGE regularly if I believe dslreports.com/mspeed (or whatever that is). Not much above "stinks" (frankly) in modern times, but a bit of a jump beyond 26,000 (or so) bits per sec. You /should/ be able to do better than modem speeds, after all.

Maybe you've got a hellacious big cell out there in flat-country, but I thought I'd heard some San Franciscans claiming stuff that broke a 1Mb/s rates regularly for 3G on some other carriers.

I'm a T-mo user in "the city", and eyeing them suspiciously about their high rates for 3G. You'd think they make enough money off the kids' SMS and ringtones to not gouge me for data .... (I need to check in more frequently with howardforums to see what people are getting).

Re: what is the best 3g phone for connection with the N800 ?

I'm on T-Mobile, and I use the TM506 to tether. I'm in Dallas.

Max BT bandwidth is 700 kbps. I always max that out when connected to the 3g network here. However, when I tether via cable to my laptop, I get 1.6 mbps.

On edge, I would get anywhere from 128 kbps to 210 kbps, and it was super laggy.

NOTE, there is a firmware update available for the TM506. DO NOT INSTALL IT. It disables BT tethering. (it also improves GPS lock time and a few other things.)

If you buy a TM506 and it has tethering disabled, you can flash an old version of the firmware over it to get tethering back. See the T-Mobile/Sony Ericsson forum on howardforums.com

I checked the t-mobile website and I didn't see the price different for 3G. If I have already subscribed for EDGE, do I need to pay more for 3G?

Re: what is the best 3g phone for connection with the N800 ?

Hi Racky,

Yes, you will pay more. A whole $5 more per month to get the 3G. I currently have simple Edge and am about to switch over to the $24.99 per month over the $19.99 (Total Internet) option.

Not unless you switch contracts. If you upgrade the phone without changing your contract, your current internet plan will stay the same price.

On the website, t-mobile doesn't distinguish between the different phone speeds for the internet pricing plans. EDGE, GPRS, 3G, they're all the same price.

Keep your current internet plan and your price won't change even if you upgrade your phone. I'm still using my $4.99/month T-Zones plan I got back in 2002.

racky 2008-12-12 03:27

Re: what is the best 3g phone for connection with the N800 ?

Wow, that is great, thanks. I have the $5.99 T-zones plan that works Ok, just too slow. If I can keep the same price and better speed, that it would be great.
Funny though, if I upgrade to google G1, T-mobile will force you to get the G1 data plan for $24.99 more, but if I upgrade to TM506, it doesn't need to, interesting because they both use the same 3G, right?

MattZTexasu 2008-12-12 04:13

Re: what is the best 3g phone for connection with the N800 ?

that's right. the difference is that t-mobile considers the G1 to be a smartphone, so a smartphone plan is required. You won't be able to tether your NIT with the G1 either.
You'll be able to tether the TM506 with the 5.99 T=zones plan, no problem, and you'll get speedy 3g speeds doing it. And it's a nice phone. Java apps are very fast on it.

Re: what is the best 3g phone for connection with the N800 ?

Both the G1 phone and the Samsung Behold don't do tethering. What's with that???

Also, the Sony TM506 needs to be downgraded on the firmware version because the newer fw upgrade removes the ability to tether. I am about to purchase the TM506 myself and am reading about how to downgrade its fw. The Nokia 6263 also does DUN connection and 3G through T-Mobile. Darla Mack used it to tether her N810 with her Nokia 6263 using T-Mobile 3G.

MattZTexasu, are you saying that you are taking advantage of the 3G speeds using the 4.99 t-zones? That would be freaking amazing.

Are there any drawbacks from going this route over the "Total Internet" option? Other than not having free T-Mobile hotspots, I can't see any drawbacks.

I have a theory that no new T-Mobile phones will allow tethering. The TM506 will be the last one.

It's true that the new fw disables tethering; but so far, no one has received a new phone with the new fw pre-installed (mine's only 2 weeks old. it had the last firmware). The people that are reporting it have upgraded via SEUS.

the 6263 supports UMTS. It's slower than the G1/behold/TM506 hspda. That's why he is only getting 350kbps.

yes, there are drawbacks. the new apn, epc.tmobile.com, compresses jpgs to the point that they look really bad. with the total internet, you can use the internet2 apn which does nothing to your content.

Also, the epc apn is completely unrestricted at the moment. Everyone expects that to end soon. When it does, they're likely to lock all ports but web proxy(8080), smtp (25), pop3(110), and imap(143). You can visit the web by setting the proxy on your NIT. or you can setup your own ssh tunnel (hint:socks proxy) using a server on one of the above open ports.

Does anyone know what's AT&T's policy on their internet offerings. I currently have the $15/m "medianet" but only at EDGE speeds (do to phone) and it tethers fine to my n800 - I do not see any other offering from them (other than the internet you get with a blackberry or iphone). I was going to get a new contract with AT&T or T-mobile and upgrade to a 3G capable phone (for tethering purposes - if of course I am still able to by they time I get my phone!).

Correct! I posted to soon!
Howard forums has a great but long thread on tethering with AT&T
here

Long story short - the media net total at $15/month works fine with tethering if your phone supports and if its not a smart phone you got from AT&T (where they charge you the $30/month). There may be restrictions in the future on ports etc. but that can be dealt with. I'll see what AT&T offered phone still have tethering (I'm likely to go with the nokia 6650 if I do AT&T)

Just for completeness:
I picked up a nokia 6650 the other day. I was looking mainly for a 3G phone that could fly under AT&T's or T-mobile's smart phone radar, was inexpensive, and played nice with the n800. The 6650 seems to fit the bill. I kicked around an older unlocked nokia, but via my wife's company I got the phone for free (its about $70 after rebate with a 2 yr contract).

Its sad how little most AT&T store reps know about this phone. Yeah its branded, which was discouraging at first, but its still got S60 and enough tweaks to be found around the symbian world to get rid of the majority of AT&T annoyances. Its has an amazingly quick pick up with its GPS (A feature a store clerks said would be disabled unless I use AT&T's nav), and works well as a walking city GPS with google maps or nokia maps.

In downtown Boston I get about 800 kb/s and average 500-800 around the city on the $15/month unlimited medianet plan. Tethering was a snap, and I can stream audio, last.fm, and video on the go without an issue (cept on the subway of course :) ).

Re: what is the best 3g phone for connection with the N800 ?

I use Verizon service and have tethered both a Samsung SCH I760 and, currently, a Samsung Omnia. The Omnia gives greater download speeds as it is 3G, where the I760 was the lesser EVDO standard. Check Howard Forums Verizon sub board for threads about ICS CABs and WMWifirouter. These CABs are free and do not cause a charge to your Verizon account. The Omnia is a great Windows PDA phone, by the way. I need to add that I have the $29.00 Data plan and an N800.

Re: what is the best 3g phone for connection with the N800 ?

Okay, I have messed with the settings on the n810 for an hour and a half. Can someone please post the correct settings for connecting using the TM506.

Connection Type: GPRS
access point name: internet2.voicestream.com
Dial-up number: *99#
username: blank
password: blank
prompt password: unchecked

Proxies: all blank
IP Addresses: auto retrieve IP address
Auto Retrieve DNS: blank
Primary: 66.94.9.120
Secondary: 66.94.25.120

Allow plain text login: checked
Use PPP compression: checked

This is my best guess, but it keeps failing to connect! Any advice???

MattZTexasu 2009-01-13 02:00

Re: what is the best 3g phone for connection with the N800 ?

I am connecting using the t-zones plan. Here are the differences in my settings:
access point name: epc.tmobile.com
Dial-up number: *99***4#

Also, I am using the opendns dns IP addresses.

Since you have the internet plan. you may want to keep your APN the same as what you have. THough, I think the epc one will work too.

I think your problem is the dial up number. with the tm506, you must specify the connection profile number. t-zones is 4. the internet plan is probably 1 or 2. There's only five of them, so I would run up the list until you find one that works. start with *99***1#.

I hope that helps.

agalvan 2009-01-13 04:59

Re: what is the best 3g phone for connection with the N800 ?

Thanks for the suggestion! What worked was changing the APN to epc.tmobile.com. Also I use either *99***4# or *99***5#. 5 seems to be faster, which would make sense if 4 is t-zones as you said.

Here's the odd thing, the APN internet2 works tethered to my laptop like a charm, along with the DNS addresses I included previously. I guess I assumed that would work as well.

Regardless, thanks again!

Has anyone gotten the N810 to use the TM506 as a GPS? It shows up under my settings for picking the GPS but never sees anything.

Is this even possible?

Munk 2009-02-01 17:44

Re: what is the best 3g phone for connection with the N800 ?

I've been running some speed tests with my T-Mobile data plan tethered to my TM506. I used three different settings and ran each one six times separated by twenty minutes each. Your experience might differ but here they are using the website of: speakeasy.net/speedtest:

Using APN: epc.tomobile.com, DUN: *99***4#:
UP:619 DOWN:92
UP:677 DOWN:96
UP:766 DOWN:95
20 mins later:
UP:618 DOWN:114
UP:549 DOWN:102
UP:723 DOWN:105

Using APN: epc.tomobile.com, DUN: *99***5#:
UP:597 DOWN:57
UP:567 DOWN:86
UP:575 DOWN:53
20 mins later:
UP:482 DOWN:88
UP:594 DOWN:80
UP:535 DOWN:102

Using APN: wap.voicestream.com, DUN: *99***4#:
UP:629 DOWN:99
UP:570 DOWN:failed
UP:638 DOWN:failed
20 mins later:
UP:806 DOWN:failed
UP:623 DOWN:failed
UP:683 DOWN:failed

My conclusion is that using APN: epc.tomobile.com, DUN: *99***4# is the best route to go but these are such small variances that I don't believe there is a clear choice. Anyways, I hope that it helps in some way.

And also, just to re-ask, has anyone successfully used the GPS in the TM506 as an external GPS for the tablet?

Ummm, in the above examples, please swap UP/DOWN as the download would always be faster than upload.
