2 questions

Hi all,

I'm still out here learning slowly... Trying to make my 810 my work travel computer...need light text editing capacity with Word docs, good e-mail, and internet. Need e-mail and documents to be integrated (i.e. opening and attachment, adding attachments needs to be easy).

Before I decide to load debian on my system I'm still trying out just working with documents and e-mail through Google.

I need a folding keyboard. I have an 810. Which iGo model do I buy? Is there another good quality folding or travel keyboard I should consider?

Secondly. I am not sophisticated in the technical side of things but I've read that Google Gear would allow me to access and work on Google docs offline. I need this option. Did I understand correectly about Google gear?

Your responses - rendered in simple language for the technologically mediocre - are welcome. :o

Re: 2 questions

I use mine in a similar way and I have found that Clawsmail is great for handling email and adding/receiving attachments. Abiword is great for documents and supports the .doc format. Use Gnumeric for excel stuff.

All of these things can be done within the standard OS, if you find that it isn't enough then I would move on to Open Office in Debian.

Why the iGo Keyboard? Is the slide out one just too small? I have fingers like sausages but I am getting pretty fast on it. Most of my document work is reading rather than writing.

Re: 2 questions

Regarding keyboard...yes, I just need to go faster...ability to take notes, respond quickly...I just can't really move quickly enough with the slide out keyboard on documents.

I find the "guess the word" function on the bottom of the screen a blessing and a curse...

I'll look into Clawsmail and Abiword as intermediate steps...thanks.

the igo stowaway ultraslim bluetooth keyboard pairs and works very well with the n800/n810, and folds nicely

Rassilon, thanks for your help on both my posts here.

I've moved images, documents and music (I don't have a lot) to the external card.

I've added abiword from the maemo site...nice program. Besides this I have xournal and skype a nd a couple other small things.

Clawsmail looks large...if I try to add it and gnumeric, I'm wondering if I will run out of memory. I have no plans to use the wayfinder map function on the 810, so that might one place to find space. And I haven't opted to check the extend virtual memory box yet in the memory<control panel...

How much space on your 810 do these 3 programs use?

Re: 2 questions

The application manager will tell you how much memory is required to install any package. I doubt you'll have any problem fitting those on your N810. You can gaain room in that first 256kb by moving data files like maps and video to the internal or an externaal memory card. By default everything goes there and it doesn't need to.

Diesel 2008-12-24 23:47

Re: 2 questions

Okay, yes I see, lots of room...and I moved the maps data to the external.

Everything has installed smoothly except for Claws Mail which cannot because of the missing libhildonfn2 file.

This is I gather a problem more difficult to solve or no?

Many thanks for continued input on these basic questions.

Re: 2 questions

I sometimes find http://www.gronmayer.com/it/index.php a useful source for finding packages but it was no help in this case. I suggest you install "sudser" with the Application Manager. This makes the "sudo" command available on the command line. You could then try "sudo apt-get install libhildonfn2".

There is no libhildonfn2 package, but libhildomfm2 does exist.

Could you post the log of application manager when trying to install claws-mai. Alternatively you could post the output of sudo apt-get install claws-mail

Yes. Indeed, I tried to install, copied the log to a doc and then cleared the log. Then I tried again to install Clawsmail and checked the log again...it was the same.

I went to Tool>Log in the application manager (assuming that was the correct place?).

Thanks.

Re: 2 questions

OK, that log wasn't very usable. Could you try sudo apt-get install claws-mail and send the output here. You need the sudser package to make sudo working.

Diesel 2008-12-26 03:40

Re: 2 questions

Here it is:

~ $ sudo apt-get install claws-mail
Reading package lists... Done
Building dependency tree
Reading state information... Done
Some packages could not be installed. This may mean that you have
requested an impossible situation or if you are using the unstable
distribution that some required packages have not yet been created
or been moved out of Incoming.

Since you only requested a single operation it is extremely likely that
the package is simply not installable and a bug report against
that package should be filed.
The following information may help to resolve the situation:

The following packages have unmet dependencies:
claws-mail: Depends: libhildonfm2 (>= 1:2.0.6.1) but 1:2.0.5 is to be installed
E: Broken packages

Okay, that might be more than I can figure out right now. I checked out bunason's post and I'll have to poke around more to see if I understand how to follow those instructions and where it will get me.

Here's another stupid question: what's the difference between the 5.2008.43.7 update and the ones available on the Nokia software update site?

Thanks for you patient help though.

Diesel 2008-12-26 22:10

Re: 2 questions

Hmmm, I can't even update to 4.2008.36-5. I get the following:

Unable to update OS2008 Feature upgrade
Application packages missing: pre-installed-documentation-rx44(=5.4)

What did I delete?

fragos 2008-12-27 00:47

Re: 2 questions

Updating to 5.2008.43.7 won't have that problem. There has been some discussion on that in the forum.

Okay I'm going to follow these instructions: Step to step guide: SAFE upgrade to Diablo-5.2008.43-7 from ANY version and I have the boot info too...will see how it goes.

Re: 2 questions

Okay, that went pretty well. Simple, clear instructions from bunason.

The tablet seems fine. Reinstalled all my old files but none of the applications/programs (like abiword, the clock in the upper right etc...). That's fine, I didn't have that much and I can re-install all of them.

But one step didn't happen and I'm not clear if it makes a difference.

I followed this:

1) NIT Software Update Wizard installed (dl the newest one from http://www.nokiausa.com/A4410958)
2) Menu/Settings/Backup/restore/New Backup, check all of them, mine is about 18 MB
3) delete apps/books/manual/media files/what nots to make 80 MB space on rootfs, check with diskusage; not quite sure this step is necessary...
4) run NIT Software Update Wizard
5) connect nokia to window box and turn on the N800 while holding/pressing the swap key, the lowest key on the 3 key button, with the icon like a house.
6) 5.2008.43-7 showed up as the latest Diablo, follow on screen instructions
7) when reboot, do a simple setup, the 4 screens setup
8) answer yes when prompted with restoring the latest backup
9) with internet connected, answer yes to "dl and install ALL programs?"
10) press OK to every single apps installed!.... "27 apps successfully installed'
11) You survived!

Everything went right according to plan through #8. When I connected to the internet and the 810 took me to the Application Manager, nothing happened....so I missed # 9 and 10?

Is there something I need to follow up with because of the above?

Also, to continue to be dense, I don't understand re-installing the boot menu...my 810 seems to be functioning normally...what am I missing that this repairs?
