Updated GPE Beta

I have released an updated GPE Beta. It is currently available in the Diablo extras-devel repository and I should shortly have it available in the Fremantle, Bora and Gregale repositories. Please provide feedback if you install and test this release as I would like to release this as a general update (in the Extras repository) in the next few weeks.

If you are using Diablo or Fremantle you can see the changes for each component as the upgrade description in the Application Manager. However, Bora and Gregale AppMgr do not show this so I will update the first reply to this message with the full list of updates.

This is primarily a bug-fix update to the previous Beta release. No major new functionality (except Fremantle support, of course).

Although the stable update will be made available in the Extras repository, this beta release is available in the "extras-devel" repositories (I will promote the fremantle version to extras-testing once I have done some initial testing). To see the update you should add a catalogue to the Application Manager as:

Catalogue name: extras-devel
Web address: http://repository.maemo.org/extras-devel
Distribution: your distribution name: gregale, bora, diablo or fremantle
Components: free

Note: even if you already have this repository set up, it is important that the Application Manager gets the latest list of packages. To force this, open up the repository entry as if you are going to change it but just click on OK. When you Close the Catalogue list the application manager will say it is "checking for updates".

After refreshing the package list and checking for updates, the application manager should offer to update whichever of the the GPE applications you have installed: GPE Calendar, GPE Contacts, GPE File Manager, GPE Timesheet, GPE Todo or GPE Audio Player. The version should be 2.8+maemo+svn20100128-1 or later.

I strongly recommend that you disable the extras-devel repository again after you have done the upgrade as it contains unreleased versions of many programs which you will not want to update.

I recommend a reboot after doing the upgrade so it can load the latest gpesummary.

Graham

Re: Updated GPE Beta

Note:
The summary applet can be sized down until it disappears from the home screen. Once it's gone, you can't grab anything to bring it back. Deselecting the applet and then reselecting it will cause the home screen to crash. A reboot brings it back.

I like the layout and icons, Excellent. I also like how tapping on the summary will bring up the relevant app.

Re: Updated GPE Beta

here are some file manager issues i would love seeing fixed:

*directory browser setting state remembered between launches.

*size of directory browser area stays unchanged if a dir has a long name.

*ability to see and resize/sort by coulmns in list mode.

*see dot-hidden files or dirs.

*no auto-resize of filename column in list mode, if files have long names.

*show horizontal scroll if columns are pushed beyond screen edge.

*show button for internal sd slot (2GB area on N810).

this would make the file manager a good replacement for the built in one...

It seems that this installation/update is working for some?

But not for me.

From what I can see, the Repository as above is empty or am I misunderstanding?

Upgraded calendar, to-do and contacts successfully. No bug(s) found so far. Thank you!

If I remember correctly, you re-installed GPE from my daily build repository. You may already have a later version than this Beta, in which case AppMgr won't upgrade you!

What version do you have installed?

Yes you are right, I had GPE apps version _2.8+maemo+svn20081216-1 (or similar) installed, which I have now uninstalled and replaced with 2.8+maemo+svn20081212-3.

Both my Extras-Devel and Graham Cobb repository are now disabled. Presumably you will notify us when the apps are next updated, otherwise how else will we know?

If there is another update to the Beta I will announce it here on ITT. But my plan is to make it a full release, in which case I will put it in Extras (not just extras-devel) and the AppMgr should tell you about the update!

tested the gpe music player just now, and i could not find any way to set the internal volume, and the output was kinda weak even when the main volume was a max...

oh, and any chance of it remembering what file, and where in it, it was when shut down?

hmm, i see now that it does, somewhat.

that is, it remembers where in a file it was, if said file was in a playing state when the player was closed...

but it is stopped/paused, it will start over from 0...

Hi all

Is there a place I can go to that gives a brief discription of the current GPE suite, it's detailed features and screen shots to show me whether this application suits my needs and how it looks on the NIT.

In the mcalendar thread someone said that there was an issue with time zones. I do not know the specifics.

This is the best resource that I know of
http://gpe.handhelds.org/documentation.phtml
There may be others of course. The screen shots are not of the NIT, possibly of a Zaurus.

There is one from a NIT of GPE Summery here
http://maemo.org/downloads/office-business/

Sorry, can't help on the time zone question

I really like that:

- There's a version with the week starting on Sunday available in a standard repo

- GPE-Contacts can be uninstalled! I don't use it, and it irritated me to no end that I had to keep it to use Calendar and To-do.

Thanks!!

Those two locations are not very good. The maemo link does not have screen shots (except summary), and the zauras link is old and the screen shots are incorrect.

Also there is no list of features.

Thanks for the response though.

That is the best I could do, I was hoping it would prompt a response from someone better informed. Maybe still to come?

That would be nice. The IPAQ 210 is a real disappointment in terms of the things that are broken which HP refuses to fix. So I need a TX replacement.

Re: Updated GPE Beta

Can someone (Graham?) confirm if command line parameters or dbus file open functionality exists for GPE Audio Player? I saw dbus support but only for focus events?

I was looking into adding support for this to dbus-switchboard but it doesnt appear to support either... would make a great light player for associations.

If neither are supported would it be possible to add simple command line option to load file (mp3 or pls?)

That way clicking on mp3 or pls in file manager or gpe file mananger could load gpe audio player if selected for those types.

Thanks

It seems like this latest gpesummary would occasionally reset my desktop. After downgrading back to the version in the /extras, my problem is gone.

I have the same problem lately (~1 desktop crash/3 days).
It's more complicated to pinpoint the problem for me as when this behaviour started I had installed more or less at the same time "advanced power", "omweather" and the latest GPE.

How often your desktop have been reseting?
Did this happen while the CPU load was high? (I've noticed this was the case for mine a couple of times).

Thanks,

Thanks,

I got roughly the same frequency as you -- 1 crash/2-3 days. It happened while I was not using it, and 2 times during night time (woke up and discovered the crash).

I have advanced power too -- no problem with it. I don't have omweather though.

So far, I have no crash after replacing it with the 20080114-2 version -- alarms don't work, but fine with me.

ah, i thought maybe the had been a new release that i had missed.

im still waiting for some developments to the gpe file manager. if they ever turn up, it would be the perfect middle point between the built in one and emelfm2 (if find the latter a bit overkill and interface heavy).

hi colleagues, Maybe somebody knows how to change that alarm sound in GPE calendar ? and is there possiblity to do quick "snoose a bit" stuff like in Palm's calendar (Palm's calendar has good feature - when alarms is "alarming" but you can't currently react on it you can push "snooze" button and it'll wait 5 mins until remind again)?

Any one having serious issues with this version or is it about as good as the current 20080114. I also wanted to know whether the multiple contacts import feature is now available.

Re: Updated GPE Beta

I've been using the beta version of GPE contacts for the past couple of weeks. Generally it stable, but I find the home applet to be buggy. I can't put specifics to it, but whenever the applet is running, my N800 gets unstable & will require a reboot after a while.
I have yet to try the multiple contact import, but the multiple export works well. :)

In general it is better than the current production version -- several bugs have been fixed, particularly in the areas of import and export. However, several users are having problems with the home page applet (which I made significant changes to). I would like to find and fix these problems, which I don't see for some reason -- I need to spend more time trying to reproduce the problem.

But I am travelling for the next three weeks so won't get a chance to work on it for a while, unfortunately.

Hi, there! I'm using the current version of GPE-Calendar and subscribing to (not synchronizing with) my Google Calendar, basically for a nice offline-viewable version of my calendar. However, as of two or three days ago, I receive the following error: "Error updating calendar Jon Gcal: invalid format for type 'date/time' in attribute CREATED." Any ideas on how to fix this? I suspect the problem's at Google's end, but has anyone else experienced it?
Cheers,
Jon

Re: Updated GPE Beta

I use GPE Calendar daily and run Erminig to sync with Google. I've never had any problems.

jonathandueck 2009-07-21 21:50

Re: Updated GPE Beta

Thanks for your reply! I used to use Erminig (the current version, I believe) but it had trouble with shifting time zones on Google (events showed up an hour off, occasionally) and with odd repeating rules that worked on Google. I really liked syncing with Erminig but occasionally lost data due to the above issues. So, since then, I use GPE as an offline viewer for my calendar, rather than a place to enter new events, and just subscribe to my GCal. However, that recently stopped working too, due to the error I mentioned in the previous post. Anyone else experience that error?

jonathandueck 2009-08-26 21:27

Re: Updated GPE Beta

So, some time ago, I posted this, on an error I encountered in a subscribed calendar, from Google Calendar, in GPE Calendar:

Quote:

Originally Posted by jonathandueck (Post 305606)

This error made it impossible for me to use GPE to view my calendar (without using Erminig, which, because I'd lost data in the past, I was a little reluctant to do).

I've figured out how to fix this -- so if it happens to you, try this. I downloaded the .ics for my calendar from Google Calendar. I ran this command on it: "grep CREATED basic.ics >> joncreated.txt". I took the resulting list of "CREATED" lines, put them in a spreadsheet, and sorted them alphabetically.

Lo and behold, the top of the spreadsheet showed this oddity: CREATED:00001231T000000Z
it found four instances. Obviously all of the zeroes and 1234 don't represent a valid date, the way the other CREATED entries did.

So, I opened my ics file (basic.ics) in a text editor and searched for every instance of CREATED:00001231T000000Z. I looked for the event name, and then deleted and remade that event in Google Calendar.

Now it works perfectly as a subscribed calendar in GPE Calendar!

Best,
Jon

Graham Cobb 2009-08-26 22:27

Re: Updated GPE Beta

Thanks for that hint, Jon.

I have also see Google come up with times that have "60" in the seconds field (and not when there is a leap second being applied). These are invalid and will also cause that error.

Unfortunately there doesn't seem to be any way to submit bug reports to Google.

Graham

Oh wow dude I love you! Seriously you solved such a big issue for me. I've given up on Erminig myself mainly for the reason that it keeps crashing on me while trying to sync. This solves a big issue for me! Thanks.

Quick question that I would like to throw out here, What would happen if I set a calendar as subscribe but then made changes and changed it to publish when I want to "sync" it.

Is there anyway to set transparency, font size, etc for the applet?
I'd also like to remove the date-time from it.

Hello, I have this problem still. I'm running version 2.8 svn20081212-3

For a while I thought it was advanced backlight, or advanced battery... At one point I even thought it was Xchat. It was GPE summary all along causing the hildon desktop crash.

I've turned off the summary applet, a few days ago, and ever since, no crashes. I've re-installed the other apps, and no crashes.

Too bad, because I think the summary applet makes the calendar program great! Anyone know if this is being fixed? if it has been reported? or where to report it?

thanks

I have noticed that I can stop crashes if the .gpe/calendar is deleted and restart the application. Then I just import my latest ics file and all are fine again for a few months.

hope it helps.
