sub $500 MID coming to USA, watch out nokia

http://www.umpcportal.com/2009/01/us...ith-windows-xp

this was announced today by velocity micro. its the same comal mid / gigabyte m528 design but its going retail in the usa. for $500 I can see this selling very well especially with windows XP as most consumers are familiar with it. I think the rx-51 will need to be very special to compete with all these new pocket devices.

I could be wrong but don't the gigabyte m528 type MIDs get their wifi though a sido card. I kinda think that's a bad idea compared to a built in module.

it uses a built in wifi chip but there are no xp drivers for it yet so people have been using usb wifi dongles.

So does this MID from velocity micro differ in that it has internal wifi as compared to wifi though SDIO in the gigabyte m528? Because, reading reviews here and here the gigabyte m528 has wifi through sdio.

I'd load linux on it anyway... maybe that'll have wifi drivers for it :)

Hey, if you guys want to wait until my Monday update, I've got info on another company, a tiny little outfit really, who's producing a MID similar to the n810, but with a much better kick*** interface and features. It's like crossing the iPhone with the n8xx series. Still gotta dig out the press release from the pile of info I brought back with me, but once I find it, I'll include it in the update. Just check my site Monday for the info. :)

Windows XP on a 4.8 touchscreen with no navigation or pointing device or keyboard and just one "start" key?!?! That sounds very impractical, or am I missing something?

the problem with atom, as anyone who's actually read anything about it, is the support chipset as they've basically been using modified desktop/laptop stuff . now that Poulsbo aka US15W chips are being used, expect the power figures to be much much better.

It looks kind of nice. It weights a little bit more and is a little bit larger, but then again you gain preformance and 3G. I think it would be a pretty sweeet device and definitely something that could replace the tablet. Im pretty new to the tablet scene and still waiting for to buy my first tablet. So here is my issue, the nokia n810 seems to be replaced by the n900 in some time (God knows when). So what im doing now, is just waiting for nokia to get the n900 ready, but since they are taking forever, I am thinking of buying this one. Any one who share my thoughts or have an second opinion?

Still nowhere near as good as ARM chips, though, especially at idle.

We might be able to talk when they start shipping SoC variants, but I highly doubt it.

arm minilaptops have been in the news but i would really like to see full sized (15inch) arm based laptops with 4 core and minimum 1gb of memory. I believe that day will come when those are in market... Now when Canonical is dealing with arm-devices.

4 core? that would probably be cortex a9 based then.

maybe a year or two away, those...

Buy used N800 for peanuts to see if you like idea of Internet Tablets. Later buy N900 when it comes out.

Just my 2ec.

Here's pictures from my site of The Unit and The Posterboard explaining what it can do. Sorry for the really pathetic quality of the pics. I'm broke and my camera is uber cheap. (well, so am I, but that's beside the point. ;))

It's the SC4000, and after tinkering with it a bit, I think it's got the potential to really put the hurt on the n8xx. hehe. The only thing about it is the weird hybrid interface. It's like half iPhone, half NIT, which really isn't that bad, since it's got to be one of the easiest to navigate that I've seen. At least it was at first glance. The best part is, it's using the latest Linux and QT versions in the interface. :D

I have a Clevo TN70M with Poulsbo aka US15W chips and I agree with you that when idle, the N800 has a longer battery life, but watching movies, music of streaming the Clevo it lasts longer than the N800. On average it lasts 4 to 5 hours independent of the usage, while the N800 will manage barely 2 hours playing Wesnoth.

Ofcoaurse, the HW is not the same. The Clevo has a 7" screen and a 4 cell battery, but the power consumption is rather good in heavy usage.

4 hours of music (and even videos depending on settings) is not a problem for the N810 either. Wesnoth is another issue, from what I've seen it won't ever idle, so your best bet is to turn music/sound off and lower CPU speed (yes, it gets a bit choppier, but can easily double your battery life, especially if you couple it with standard battery tricks like offline mode, lower display brightnes, etc), but don't blame a desktop app's fault on the device/platform.

Yes, music vs Wesnoth is hardly a comparison. The N800 can do music for about 8-10 hours.

That's on 3-year-old tech, by the way. Just wait until the OMAP3 tablet is out.
