Whats happening to N810 WiMax?

Found this article this morning. I just bought my first internet tablet a N810 WiMax edition on Monday should be here tomorrow.:D Anybody know whats going on? Why are they discontinuing the wimax version

NEW YORK (AP) — Just as Clearwire Corp. has fired up its long-awaited WiMax wireless data network in two cities, Nokia Corp. has stopped selling the only portable gadget that can use the network without accessories.

Nokia spokeswoman Laurie Armstrong confirmed Wednesday that the company has discontinued the N810 Internet Tablet WiMax Edition on its Web site.

Armstrong did not say why the tablet was withdrawn. But she said Nokia is still interested in WiMax, and by the time WiMax networks are more widely deployed, "refreshed products with even better performance will be required."

Nokia's portable computer, which has a 4.1-inch touch-sensitive screen and a slide-out keyboard, is still for sale for $438 in a version without a WiMax modem.

WiMax, sometimes described as a long-range version of Wi-Fi, is a competitor to traditional cellular broadband technologies. It offers relatively fast data speeds, and its proponents hope that WiMax antennas will be built into a variety of gadgets, from small computers to GPS devices.

Leading computer manufacturers have announced their intention to make their laptops WiMax-capable, but for now the only way to use Clearwire's "Clear" network is with plug-in modems.

"We have a robust pipeline of devices slated throughout 2009 and will be providing more details in the coming weeks," said Susan Johnston, spokeswoman for Clearwire.

The network is live in Baltimore and Portland, Ore.

Clearwire was formed last year by the union of a smaller company of the same name with Sprint Nextel Corp.'s WiMax division.

Don't have it yet and it is already extinct? Sorry to hear that. I'm surprised to see no mentioning of the n810 Wimax demise on the main page of this site. This site is changing its name from the Internet Tablet to something else should be another clue. The end is near.

I was surprised too that is why I posted. Man..., just when I finally take the plunge everybody is getting out of the pool.

The n900 is near at hand, so why continue selling the n810wm if it's going to compete against the n900? The only thing I don't like so far (and there's been gobloads of rumored stuff I'm drooling over in the n900) about the n900 is that it lacks the ability to do wifi. Other than that one little drawback, I'm dying of anticipation for it. So the withdrawl prior to the eventual announcement is no surprise to me. In fact, if nothing else, it just confirms my suspicions that there'll be a surprise announcement sometime this spring of the n900. :D

When will that be specifically? Watch the progress of Maemo 5. When it hits RC1 level, expect the n900 to get announced. ;)

It makes me wonder why you're still hanging about posting such things, since you seem to have written the tablets off already. Why not find a forum dedicated to some non-"doomed" device, or if you must go on about "the end is near", shouldn't you be telling us to repent or something, too?

What makes you think it lacks WiFi? From everything I've heard, it will have WiFi, and this is the first I've heard anyone even doubting it. I'm open to new info, so if you've got a source, I'd like to know of it, but it's a very surprising (and hard to believe) conclusion. All the good smartphones have WiFi, it doesn't make sense that the next tablet would be dropping it.

Yeah, the RX-51 will definitely have WiFi - just take a look at Nokia's recent devices. Everything from the mid-end up features WiFi...

WiFi with open source drivers, even.

Uhh, no. This is actually very positive news. It means Nokia is not ditching WiMAX. They keep the option to include WiMAX radio very much open.

So in 2009, while more WiMAX networks are deployed, the N810WME is too much out of date. Makes a lot of sense...

Benson - When I read the speck a few months back, I read something (it was here, but I don't remember the thread) that said it would only have Wimax and 3g, but no Wifi.

So do I keep it or should I return it unopened?

@wolfruler, your n810wm is far from obsolete, it's a damn good device. I would buy one tomorrow if I could, even though I live in UK and there's no wimax service AT ALL!
If you live in USA, there will be wimax service some of the time, some places, so it won't be a dead duck.
And even if wimax fails, I think enterprising hackers will find a way of using the physical interface to the wimax module to do interesting and clever stuff, which is why I'd buy it!

@slingster - go and sling your mud elsewhere. why not shove off to some microsoft site where you can moan about DRM & TPM, windows worms viruses and trojans, and closed-source lock-ins. we members of ITT are very happy with our devices and because they're open, they don't become instantly useless like a Zune would be if MS closed shop. We accept technical upgrades as an opportunity, not a rejection.

At one time, I was hoping for this as well, but it seems unlikely. The 810W is not WiMax certified, it has been pulled by Nokia, and it has been reported to not work on the Clear network in Portland. That's why I'm no longer considering buying it.

Wimax is demodulated, etc., in HW, so you can't hack it.
