FLOSS Weekly 54 podcast covers Maemo

The website

The Podcast MP3

Quim Gil is an open source advocate in Nokia's Maemo software unit, where he promotes good open source development and practices at a platform and application level both inside Nokia and in the Maemo community. He also helps build relationships between Maemo and the upstream projects that make Maemo happen. The Maemo platform is 80 percent open source and most of it comes from projects like the Linux Kernel, Xorg, the freedesktop.org and GNOME umbrellas, and more.

Sounded fine to me on the videocast. . . .

It survives the humidity here without issue, why not a sauna? ;)

heh, you may have a point there ;)

Quim gil just said this in the podcast, @ 37:50 - 37:55

"All the things we are cooking will be seen next month"

It is official. maemo 5 will be released next month.

I am looking forward to this.

he could have said or meant say "months"

Re: FLOSS Weekly 54 podcast covers Maemo

Knowing Quim personally, I wouldn't take a general comment like that as 100% anything. After all, perhaps he was just referring to the gaspacho soup he's been cooking in the kitchen... ;)

I would also think quim was actually talking about real cooking.
They are leaving the heatsinks off the processors and making lunch for the entire Nokia staff.

Supposing this to be an accurate statement, rather than an uncorrected live-interview slip-up, it still doesn't mean a final release; a beta would seem to fit quite well, and be more inline with expected schedules. And that beta might or might not be demoed on final hardware.

I think an RX-51 announcement, and demo of a live unit running pre-release Maemo, is likely, but that statement doesn't really seem to confirm it to me.

I just listened the podcast and I also noted that the final "s" didn't sound, but I said 'months'.

... and now I also noticed that they never mentioned what the hell was I doing in a sauna. The call happened at midnight and that was the only place where I could talk loudly without waking up the kids. :)

It was turned off and I was not wearing the sauna dress code.

In Nokia offices all our teleconference meeting rooms double as saunas.

Here's the video, featuring an old version of LCARS Modern, running on chinook. Also demoed at length: Maemo bugs 3659 and 3678 (which are still present in Diablo). Quim added himself to the CC lists for both bugs following this interview, so hopefully they'll get fixed. :D

Re: FLOSS Weekly 54 podcast covers Maemo

i suspect they may well end up as "fixed in freemantle", given the kind of bugs that they are...

Texrat once mentioned giving a few people fully functional N800s that had been through testing--which including being baked in an oven. Someone else in these fora related a story of an N800 falling into the water during a fishing trip--and continuing to play audio during and after. These things are made by a cellphone manufacturer, remember, not some wimpy PC clone company.

I don't know anything about their reliability, really. I was thinking more generally of all the "I dropped my cellphone in the toilet. It still works. I wish it didn't." stories I've heard.

@qgil: thanks for taking the time to do the podcast. it's good to get some insight and context for projects like Qt.

I listened to the podcast yesterday. I wish Leo and Randall would do a little more research before doing these interviews. I guess it helps inform the public that also has the same questions, but it makes them look ignorant.

Re: FLOSS Weekly 54 podcast covers Maemo

mrklaw, i thought they asked quite a lot of decent questions.

Additionally, they talk about different kit every time they are on you couldn't expect them to know everything about everything.

quim held his own and it made for a more honest discussion and appraisal with folks than a hardcore fanboy lovein.

what part made them look ignorant?

I bought a used N800 in September '08. It worked great.

On one of my rides home in October, the lid of my water bottle was not securely tightened. It leaked water all the way home. When I pulled the tablet's carrying case out of the pannier, it was soaking wet.

I immediately turned off the tablet (it was still functional) and let it dry out for a few days. It works fine again, except the right speaker usually blasts out a single, full-volume tone when I enable the speakers. If I use headphones, there's no problem with the audio.

So, no, the N800s are not waterproof :D

I didn't intend to give that impression. I've found the original story though.

You're welcome! For what is worth, I'm ususally open to chats and talks and I have answered to all offers received, including a Thoughtfix show and a bunch of questions penguinbait emailed once.

Some time ago there was this idea about having a monthly chat in #maemo-meeting, we had one... but never a second.

The only one that really stuck out in my mind was when Randal was asking if it had a touchscreen or a keyboard. You don't have to do hours of research to figure stuff like that out.

Once they got all that out of the way, I thought that it was a really good interview.
