Re: [Announce] Aard Dictionary released

I would love to be able to use this for the Merriam Webster's Dictionary but I can't get the aardtools to install on my machine (X11 on a Mac OSX Leopard). I keep getting various errors. So I can't get the XDXF file converted. Is there any place that has more dictionary option in aar format for downloading?

The trouble with Merriam Webster's XDXF is that it is most likely distributed without permission from copyright owners- which is why this otherwise fine dictionary is not up for download at aarddict.org.

As far as aardtools go, I was able to get it to work on Mac OS X with MacPorts 1.600 (to get ICU 3.8), but it is a tedious process and my environment is not clean, so I can't provide reliable instructions (also, current MacPorts is 1.7.0, which has ICU 4.0 - not sure if that would work at all). I can outline basic steps if you feel like trying it, but there's probably quite a lot of details you will have to figure out yourself.

An easier way though may be to run Ubuntu in a virtual machine (install VMWare Fusion and download Ubuntu VMWare appliance, or run it in VirtualBox) and install aardtools there.

The english wikipedia torrent doesn't link anywhere or start.

Do we run it inside maemo?

Plus, how big is the dictionary?

The link points to enwiki-20081008.v1.aarddict.torrent - you need to download the file and open it with a BitTorrent client (pick one from the list at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/BitTorrent_client). English Wikipedia October 2008 dump in aard format is ~ 5.8G.

Hm, this looks nearly identical to sdictviewer, which is what I've been using up to now. Is aarddict the successor to sdictviewer, or are the two otherwise related somehow?

Excelent tool! I almost can't believe that I can now carry the complete Wikipedia (sans pictures) in my pocket. Amazing! Kudos to the coders for a job well done!

I'm working now on getting a good Brazilian Portuguese dictionary into it... will post here when I succeed.

Thank you :) Most of it goes to Pedia Press and the mwlib team that does all the heavy lifting needed to properly parse Mediawiki markup.

It's best to post your questions to http://aarddict.org/forum/ if you need any help with aardtools.

Where the content of this dictionary comes from? If it's license allows free distribution we can host it at http://aarddict.org.

does this work in n900 ?
and whats the difference between this and evopedia ?

evan 2010-12-15 08:34

Re: [Announce] Aard Dictionary released

It works in my n900 very nicely
you have to check out
http://aarddict.org/
download section
It will add it's own repository to download it.
I uses it's own format .aar for dictionaries and has some ready for download , torrents that is. It also has some tools to convert other dicts into it's own format, but I have not tried that yet.

Re: [Announce] Aard Dictionary released

worked great, but why does it always open the available connection box ? im not highlighting the check online !
and also when i scroll by my finger it highlights the whole article and seems the only way to scroll is by opening the keyboard and use up/down arrows.
any1 tried it and found a solution ? specially with the online issue ?

Re: [Announce] Aard Dictionary released

You may write a file at
/home/user/.aarddict with the filename user.css
Containing
body {-khtml-user-select: none;}
sadly this disables text selection but helps somewhat with scrolling. I prefer to point somewhere just left to the thin right bar and scroll.
As to the automatic connection, yes it does this also to me, Don’t know why.

I don't know. This doesn't happen to me. Try installing a different dictionary and see if the same thing happens?

looks easy, but i'm not understood. You install it with "single click install for Maemo 5" (HAM: can not load 'aarddict'. Application package was not found)? Or from maemo 4.1 repository (i can't find aarddict in it)
Give me a link to .deb file please

itkach 2011-11-12 16:14

Re: [Announce] Aard Dictionary released

There is single aarddict repository (added by maemo.install) for both Maemo 5 and 4 (Maemo 4 users need to have additional repository enabled - Maemo Extras Dev ). The debs are at https://github.com/aarddict/aarddict...r/binary-armel.

The following packages must be installed:

libicu38_3.8.1-1maemo1_armel.deb
pyicu_0.8.1-2maemo_armel.deb
aarddict_0.9.3-1maemo_armel.deb

aarddict also depends on PyQt4 packages and python-simplejson which, if I am not mistaken, for N900 come from Maemo Extras repo which is pre-installed and enabled by default since Maemo 5 PR 1.2.

thanks, it works. I'm manually download and install .debs.
But .install file for hildon application manager not works (it adds repo, but not aarddict package). I'm tried many times with no effect.
