Sooo one sided... brilliant!

"Ok you have to turn the device, strange"

When navigating through the music. "Let's find something, how can I find"

"But how can I fast forward to the middle of a song?"

"Bit of a strange interface, but I guess you can get used to it"

Hmmm, a 10 year Nokia employee comparing a Nokia product against something else. What could the outcome possibly be..?

The fact that he couldn't even figure out how to fast forward the music track showed that he hadn't taken the time to learn the product., whereas the N810 he knew inside and out (probably because he helped design/develop it?)

Way too much bias and an unfair review, IMO. I'm not a 'fanboy' but he made the Touch seem way worse than it actually is. (flame suit on).

Re: n810 vs ipod touch review

Yes it was biased but the Touch gets a lot more advertising so I see this as readdressing the balance slightly.

... as I said before: Yes, I agree the thing is totally biased (and I admit I love it because of this), but the part about the FF seems to be one of the more objective points he made.

Looking at the interface, I wouldn't know how to fast forward, either. If this is some hidden function you have to "learn", then the UI is broken. It's as simple as that.

The second thing in the video I think is absolutely true is when he complains about the keyboard. Having used both an iPod Touch and an iPhone, I can only agree. I don't know what this 'keyboard' was designed for, but it certainly wasn't typing. (The guy used landscape mode in the video, which makes it even easier... sometimes the keyboard pops up in portrait mode, it's just impossible to use then.)

Re: n810 vs ipod touch review

They've improved the player ui recently (or at least I only recently upgraded my gf's one) as in the old days I used to try tapping the volume slider expecting that to be the position in the track. Now at least they have two sliders, and you can sit and watch it moving to try to guess which is which ;)

Having used both the N800 and iPhone and Touch I prefer the iPhone and Touch, much nicer UI, better selection of apps, and more responsive touch interface. Biggest downside of iPhone and Touch is the lack of Flash support and ability to multitask. But overall I've pretty much stopped using the N800 since getting the iPhone.

No. I don't run a charity for hardware I don't use often :p

Re: n810 vs ipod touch review

It wouldn't be charity. Charity is when you give something to someone in need. A way of helping someone who has no means to help themselves. Some people think that it is a sham, and that a lot of the money gets spent paying the workers of said charity. But the child I sponsor in Ethiopia gets almost every penny I send. I know because I have done my research and know people who work for the organization. People are much too attached to their money and things. I don't need, just want, especially if it is just gathering dust.

Anyway, back on subject I think what the video shows is valid. I have used both as well and I am much happier with what the n800 can do. At first i missed the UI of the ipod, but soon that disappeared because it forced me to actually use my device rather than spend all my time playing with how cool the ui was.

As far as better selection of apps, that depends on your viewpoint. Yes the ipod does have very useful apps such as a farting app, a dice app, even an app that makes it so you can manipulate a woman's breasts on a photo by shaking your ipod. If this community was more mature then maybe it could make some of these apps, but they seem to spend all their time on immature beta software that does stuff like browse the internet faster (tear anyone?) and then they give away for free. Someday nokia and this community will catch up.

There are far more apps than the few you chose to point out 15,000+ both paid and free. To each their own. I have both devices and prefer the iPhone is all. It is a much nicer and cleaner UI IMHO, and the capacitive screen is easier to use with finger than N800 is. Considering how short a time the store has been live compared to the Nokia community, it seems to be moving much faster.

I know there are more, but when you get rid of all the extra crap and then look at what you have there are mostly paid apps that are mostly games. I would say that if you want a more gaming centric rig then go for the ipod, but otherwise, what you can do with the n8x0 far outshines the ipod. If you disagree, try using a bluetooth keyboard on your ipod, or plugging in some sd cards, or a usb device, or installing another os. Masses like simplicity and things that look good, so the ipod is for the masses. Last time I went to mass it was a bunch of people chanting stuff that they had no idea what it meant, but they were told it was the thing to do. Not for me.

I'm the other way round - yes the ui is nice on the iPod Touch, but I dislike the way you have to type and the limited apps (loads of bloody games, and you have to pay for them all ;)). Bring on some OpenGL goodness and I see no reason why we can't have as pretty a UI as on the iPod Touch.

Personally i like it when I-Touch users ask what's "that" in my hand?

"Its a 16gb Touchscreen media player that'll play pretty much any format of audio or video with GPS, Camera, Bluetooth DUN , REAL keyboard and a shedload of free apps that can be run in multitask. Oh, and it cost 1/3rd of what you paid for yours....

...what you got?"

:p

That plays a lot of video podcast videos poorly and has a poor GPS?

The N8xx are nice devices but far from perfect. No one device is perfect, they all have areas they excel in, the iPhone and Touch are no different. All comes down to how you want to use it. For the typical not super techy user, I think the N8xx is a bit too much to take on, it requires tweaking to get workign right IMHO. The iPhone ofers out of the box ease of use for most, and the cost of flexibility. Its biggest weakness in my view is the lack of multitasking.

This is like the old argument of Linux vs Windows...

You've got something that's secure, functional, versatile, and cheap compared to something Pretty, Popular, Restricted and Expensive.

Nobody will ever win... the one side wants to justify being cheap, the other side wants to justify why they spent their childs college education on a toy...

That's my take anyway... These devices appeal to completely different people.

Agreed, the debate will never end. They both have different core markets, although I don't think the price difference is as big as you make it sound, an 8Gb Touch is around $200. Sure it costs more but it isn't that much more. Someone on a tight budget scraping to save for their kids education isn't going to get either probably.

If you want a fully open source based device that you can customize and hack then sure the N8xx is the way to go. Or you can also jailbreak an iPhone ot Touch and get additional fucntionality Apple wont permit. Both have pretty active communities for both offical and non offical software. They are just different communities with biases.

Actually this is becoming one of my pet peeves. The tablet can't play h.264 that a lowly ipod can play. And I'm not sure that it's because the hardware can't handle it (between the ARM, DSP and IVA). Most podcasts are off limits. DVDs that I want to transport have to be encoded twice, once for the ipod users and once for the tablet users in my family.

Yeah.. more what I get at when discussing price is also the cost of the follow on software.

The N8** nearly everything is free... anything it CAN do.. it can do with no added cost to the end user (few exceptions of course, like the Mapper).

The iPod Touch.. yes there is free apps, but the vast majority of them, in my experience (I don't own one, just played with a few), were either severely lacking in features - or were 'trial' versions of the real software in hopes to 'bait' you into buying the full version.

After you get an iPod touch with everything you want on it and buy the full versions to everything.. the price difference gets much larger. Again, just my experience.

Re: n810 vs ipod touch review

Most apps run from .99 to a few dollars, yes there are games and other apps that are 10, 20+

I guess I don't mind paying a bit for useful apps. Being a software developer I guess I see that I like to get paid for my work. And to be fair, I'm not an open source guy.

And having used both for some time, my experience of general day to day use for what I need it for still goes with the iPhone. Everyone will want different things and thus different devices may suit them better.

I respect that we have different tastes. Don't get me wrong, a refurb itouch from apple with 1yr warranty and 16gb storage is tempting at $230 or whatever they are now, but then i think about how much music I have, and it is automatically not a good choice as a music player. Then if i think about it as a computing device, and the kicker is the lack of any way to plug in useful things. If I could plug in a keyboard and a hard drive, then maybe I would think of getting one. To me it is really frustrating to have all these devices that come so close to meeting all my wildest computing dreams, and fit in my pocket, but fall short, not because it is not possible, but because they don't want to add very useful features. This is why I am hopeful for the next nokia device, because they have pushed off in the right direction and may just make the most useful device. Then again maybe not, or maybe it will cost more than the average moe can afford.

The whole turning the device part does seem odd, to me. Shouldn't the photo viewer know which orientation is optimal already and use it? And if the device loves horizontal orientation so much (coverflow, etc.) why don't they just make it a choice consistent through the entire operating system like Palm's Pre does?

Agree completely. We are yet to see the prefect device, all have their strong points but no one device yet has all those points.

Have you used a Palm Pre? Until we have I don't think we can really comment. Lots of UIs look great in pics and demos. It does look intresting though, but so have many others that have come before.
