How To: Send and Recieve Texts from N810

I'm sure this has already been posted somewhere, but when I scoured the web and the forums I did not find a simple way to send SMS messages from the N810.

You need an email that you can access from your N810 in order to do this. It is probably best to make a new email account so that you don't get spammed with texts.

Step 1: Get to your email account either through
A) Setting up your mail account in the Mail application.
B) Logging in on a webmail.

Step 2: Find the address of the phone you are trying to text
"number" is the ten digit phone number

Alltel: number@message.alltel.com
AT&T: number@txt.att.net
Metro PCS: number@mymetropcs.com
Sprint PCS: number@messaging.sprintpcs.com
T-Mobile: number@tmomail.net
Verizon Wirless: number@vtext.com
Virgin Mobile: number@vmobl.com

Most others can be found HERE

Step 3: Compose email and send it to the address
Remember that cell phones have character limits to it.

This way is very crude, however it does not require any installations or programming. If you use the mail application, it will alert you that you got new mail when your text is replied. If you use webmail, you well have to recheck your mail every time to see if you have new texts.

Ya, it can be annoying at times, but it does work.

By the way, this strategy can be applied to most other gadgets that use the internet.

actually, its easier to use the built in chat client. Make a gtalk field entry for the contact you want of +15556667777@sms.talk.google.com. That way you can IM through texts and you dont have to wait for or keep refreshing your email.

Is this something limited to US networks?

Yep. US only for now. Mentioned here:

https://mail.google.com/mail/#settings/labs

(look for "Text Messaging (SMS) in Chat")

Feedback forums for Gtalk SMS is here:

This was more of the fire proof way of doing it.
Its also one you can just pick up and use it somewhere else.
I have multiple internet tablets so it works rather well for things that don't have those options.

In every case I've seen, it costs for both the sender and receiver of a text. So whoever you send a text to is gonna get slapped with a charge.

Re: How To: Send and Recieve Texts from N810

in the US you pay for incoming minutes/texts, unless you've got an option for incoming minutes/texts (that is, you pay them anyway, but at a cheaper price).
that is the reason why this methods work in the US.

The receiver get charged standard txt messaging rates. Same as if you send an email as per the first post or just send them a txt from your phone.

Courtesy has always dictated asking if it's ok to communicate w/someone via txt.

just to be clear, is there an extra charge outside of the receiver's sms plan???

I'm not sure how I didn't answer that. It's the same as sending a txt msg from your phone.

Sure glad that I receive texts for free. As it should be anyway. How is it right to get charged for something that you have no control over (other than getting rid of your cell phone) At least for calls you can choose to not answer, texts go right through. But I'm going to set this up in my email clients (tablet and laptop) for easy and free text messaging.

Re: How To: Send and Recieve Texts from N810

I've been using +1555666777@sms.talk.google.com method to Text Mesage my friends from my Nokia N810. It had worked just fine until recently. Now when I try to send a text message, it says "No permission for this operation". I also can't recieve the texts on my Nokia. Does anybody know how to fix this problem.

Or does anybody know how to reset to default settings?

Re: How To: Send and Recieve Texts from N810

It won't work, Google stopped the free SMS plan due to abuse from "Infinite SMS" an application on the iPhone someone charged for.

Re: How To: Send and Recieve Texts from N810

That is a logical explaination, but why can I still text message from the chat in my email account?

You can still use it if you are logged into gmail and presumably from the gtalk desktop client, but I haven't tried that. They are just rejecting from all third party apps which includes the programs on the tablet, desktop clients such as Pidgin, etc

Thanks so much for the help, I thought I did something to break it. Glad to know its not my fault.

henrykins111 2010-02-21 19:06

an easier way

Here's a simpler way. get an aim account, get pidgen mobile messager for n810, and make a buddy in this format: +13456457890
the plus and 1 is necessary and i don't know if it works with non-us numbers. :)

hi, i know this is an old thread but i don't want to start a new one
i followed henrykins111 advice and i dl'd pidgen internet messenger onto my n810 and added a buddy with the +12345678989 format. my question is how do i receive offline texts?

because whenever i send something to my n810 after i've logged off it says Unable to send message: Refused by client
