A special thank-you for the developers of Tear

About a year and a half ago, I purchased my N810. I think that the first web-site that I opened was reddit.com, still my favorite news site. It loaded quickly and displayed perfectly. Needless to say, I was thrilled. Over time, reddit continued adding new features. Some of these were genuinely useful, others not so much, but each one slowed the site down just a bit. In the last month, the site finally became practically unusable. I started using the mobile version of reddit instead, but everytime I did, I thought about how the whole point of the Internet Tablet is to offer (most of) the desktop browsing experience in a mobile package.

Tear has given me back my Internet Tablet, even better than when I bought it. That's why clicking the little "Thanks" button just isn't thanks enough for this upgrade. I was expecting that I would have to pay $500 for the N900 in order to get this level of performance again. So thank-you, bundyo, fmercado, ignacius, smilo and all the others who have contributed.

This is the method that I used for installing Tear:
  • Install the 'rootsh' package, through the usual method (Applications -> Settings -> Application Manager -> Browse Installable Applications)
  • Add the 'Extras Devel' repository. Go to "Applications -> Settings -> Application Manager -> *the drop down menu* -> Tools -> Application Catalog...", the create a new catalog with:
    Name: maemo Extras Devel
    Web address: http://repository.maemo.org/extras-devel/
    Distribution:
    Components: free non-free
  • Go to "Applications -> Utilities -> X Terminal" and enter the following commands:
    sudo gainroot
    apt-get install libidn11 libxslt1.1
  • Go to this thread. If the first post in that thread is still describing version 0.3, preview 4 of Tear, then follow the next two steps. If there is a newer version being discussed, then the following two steps are likely obsolete.
  • Click this link. Choose "Open" and follow the prompts in the Application Manager to install it.

Once installed, it should be available under the "Applications -> Internet". You should also go back into the Application Manager and disable the "maemo Extras Devel" repository, to keep from accidentally upgrading your other applications to versions that aren't fully complete yet.

Thank to the developers of WebKitGtk. I'm just hacking around :)

Re: A special thank-you for the developers of Tear

in the tear3 thread just a few post bundyo added the tear bookmark just in case you didn't notice it, by the way sometimes the thank you button is not enough to click for those coders and dev team here on this forum, i realy think nokia should CONSIDER OFFERING EACH OF THEM A N900 device when they do release it.

Re: A special thank-you for the developers of Tear

You hacked around enough to give us a really good browsing experience.

I think clickin' the "Thanks" button isn't enough too, so:

Bundyo, thanks a lot dude. :)

Re: A special thank-you for the developers of Tear

No thanks... and no disrespect but. This apparently needs some heavy lifting and still has the possibility to break something that already works on my tablet.

I feel your sentiments regarding the developers and agree 100% with what others have posted. However, after trying to follow your install instructions
Quote:

In the first post, click the link for the latest version of WebKit (40663 as of this writing)
Once that has installed, click the link for the latest version of Tear (0.3 preview 4 as of this writing)
Link??? Post???
and then attempting to parse the original Tear thread>> http://www.internettablettalk.com/fo...ad.php?t=24293 for more insight; I have come to the conclusion that I am either to dense to understand your post or that there is a reason it isn't a standard install yet.

Good for you though! :)

Re: A special thank-you for the developers of Tear

AFAIK, Tear has no potential to break anything else. The reason it's not a standard install? I think that's just because the extras auto-builder can't build Vala apps yet. (If it were in extras, then the dependencies could be fetched / installed automatically...)

Try the Tear 0.3 thread instead, it may be more enlightening.

Re: A special thank-you for the developers of Tear

@YoDude: sorry about the poor instructions that I wrote. Now that I've given them a second look, it's clear how difficult they would be to follow. I'm normally pretty good at writing directions; I guess I'm off my game. I updated them to be simpler.

As for Tear itself, yes, there are several bugs and missing features. It's probably not ready to totally replace the default browser right this minute, but given the rate of progress... it might not be much longer.

PS: If anyone else has problems following those instructions, let me know and I'll update them again.

Re: A special thank-you for the developers of Tear

maybe remind people to disable extras-devel after this install. they may accidentally "upgrade" to nonworking versions of their favorite apps.

Yup...
A link to that originally would have helped a bit.
I see nobodysbusiness has updated the first post to include that, thanks.

BTW, I was now able to easily follow the instructions found in the opening post and have run this blazingly fast browser and see that nothing has broken. WooHoo!

Thanks, nobodysbusines

Thanks nobodysbusiness.

Your instructions are crystal clear now. One slight quirk, I got only 96/100 on the acid test. Any suggestions? I have to double post, as I follow your instructions but using Bundyo's tear 0.3

Re: A special thank-you for the developers of Tear

Thank you for this, but I can't install libidn11. I get that libwebkitgtk-1.0 depends on libicu38, but it won't be installed. When I try the advised 'apt-get -f install' I'm told that /var/cache/apt/archives is out of space. I've run 'clean', and even deleted the subdirectory 'partial' and created it again, so /var/cache/apt/archives is empty, but I get the same errors.

I have enabled every repository at gronmayer.com/it due to too many unmet dependencies in the past. Could that be the issue? Should I disable most of them?

Thanks.

[edit] I worked it out. Just had too much installed. I'm still learning how to use this thing. Thanks.

Re: A special thank-you for the developers of Tear

@bunanson: From what I understand, different versions of the web-kit library have different levels of acid test compliance, due to the software being under active development. At this point, it's probably best to just wait for a stable release and hope that scores 100/100.

Re: A special thank-you for the developers of Tear

I have gotten this app to install successfully on a couple of my bootable partitions (I have a triple-booting setup; flash plus two partitions on an internal on an N800). Unfortunately when I go to run it, nada. Just sits there. Is there something I could have installed that conflicts with it? I do have a lot installed on one partition, but not much on the other one (rarely use it). I mostly just have things like the pybattery meter, maemo mapper, battlegweled, fbreader, maemo recorder, knips, gpe calendar, gparted, emelfm2, advanced backlight, and one other thing installed. (Okay, maybe I do have a lot installed on here)

Re: A special thank-you for the developers of Tear

I think there is a dependency. As root, try:

apt-get install libpcre3

if that doesn't work, enable red pill mode and try installing libpcre3 through app manager (I used this last method, I think.)

Bundyo 2009-03-02 19:49

Re: A special thank-you for the developers of Tear

Got to investigate thiss libpcre issue.

heelio 2009-03-02 20:08

Re: A special thank-you for the developers of Tear

That worked. Didn't need red pill. Just apt-get install it. Thanks. Very nice browser fixes some issues I had with MicroB not loading some webpages right and zooming in. This loads em right!

Re: A special thank-you for the developers of Tear

Ya, I had to install libpcre3 as well. It is like a guessing game with these libraries since there is no tab autocompletion on the tablets and no GUI package manager, so you have to just keep typing stuff in until you get lucky and get the correct package name.

Bundyo 2009-03-03 17:24

Re: A special thank-you for the developers of Tear

The latest version of Tear has real dependencies on libpcre3, so you can see it :)

drizek 2009-03-03 17:51

Re: A special thank-you for the developers of Tear

yes, but it is on libpcre.so.3, which is different from the package name.

apt-cache search is prettty cool... :)

Re: A special thank-you for the developers of Tear

It should complain on installation with the package name. I'm talking about 0.3-5.1 from yesterday.

Bash from extras-devel and http://www.caliban.org/files/bash/ba...0060301.tar.gz work for me to have tab autocompletion on my tablet

Re: A special thank-you for the developers of Tear

I just installed Tear on my N800. The difference in page load time between Tear and Microb is amazing. Almost 20 seconds faster for the average internettablettalk forum page. I love the kinetic scrolling.

Cruelkix 2009-03-03 20:33

Re: A special thank-you for the developers of Tear

I want to say how seriously impressed I am. I always dive into these installs looking for some serious improvements, and there are tons of posts saying that "ZOMG This makes things 1337!!" But it never really helps. This thing is straight up awesome. There are a few pages that dont load quite right, but the speed increase is just amazing. the fact that I cna scroll a page well is increadible. I <3 Tear!

In the first post of the Tear thread :)
Or directly here:
http://bundyo.org/maemo/webkit/libwe...28-1_armel.deb

You need only one of them (I probably should remove the other alternative since it won't work with it).

thanks -tried it out-fastest browser i have used including windows ce and wm 6---well done...a few bugs but worth the speed

Re: A special thank-you for the developers of Tear

I finally got webkit installed. I had to force it to overwrite since there was some error (can't remember exactly) and installed Tear. Now it says Tear is loading then just quits. Any ideas?

I've actually been having quite a bit of trouble with installations lately. I've had to install software using the terminal a few times, (download and dpkg -i). Is there something I can do to get my n810 back to playing nice?

TrueJournals 2009-03-04 14:21

Re: A special thank-you for the developers of Tear

Can you run tear from the command line and post the errors that occur (if any)?

ctennenh 2009-03-04 15:11

Re: A special thank-you for the developers of Tear

Sure. Sorry, I was away from my tablet earlier.
-------
~ $ tear
tear: error while loading shared libraries: libpcre.so.3: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory
----
Is this due to a poorly installed webkit?

daperl 2009-03-04 16:52

Re: A special thank-you for the developers of Tear

I'll let the command line speak for me:

Code:

Nokia-N810-43-7:~# /etc/init.d/tablet-browser-daemon stop
But the end of this article makes me think that Nokia is moving over to a webkit-based browser. Maybe that's one of the big Fremantle surprises.

That's not all that suggests WebKit in Maemo's future ;)

I would guess that maybe the old two-engine browser will return, this time one Opera less, one WebKit more :)

If that's the case, the next few months should be enough to show Nokia that they might as well just open-source the browser and bookmarks. Their current interface is very undesirable to me and if I can't customize it to all my likings, I won't be using it. I already don't. :)
