Is There Any Text to Speach Functionality (where it reads to you)?

Just wonder if the little thing could replace my laptop in that regard.

Flite is the text-to-speech package. Try a search -- there's already at least one thread.

Don't think it's available for 2006 yet.

Thanks so much, that's a start even if not for 2006 yet. Shoot may end up with an '05 model anyway, there's a used one up on craigslist, it's up in Killeen texas though.

So is there anything out there yet besides maemo mapper that utilizes flite?

None. Or speech to text. It's a shame.

I would love to see text to speech functionality integrated into fbreader. I could have it read to me while out and about walking and while stationary could switch to plain olde eyeball mode.

You gotta ask yourself: Do I want my N800 to read Karel's posts out loud? Do I? Really??

Well, kismet will also use it in theory. And, if you're cool, you could run it at the command prompt. No "assistive tech"-type screenreader yet, though, that I know of.
