Seen this??: Nokia Sparrow

UPDATE: Should have read the thing more closely: this is just a mockup done by the website, not Nokia. :( Anyway, descriptions of upcoming devices are always intriguing...

Perhaps I'll get flogged for missing some prior posting about this (or about how it's a rumor and should be ignored). But, whatever. FYI:

Nokia Reportedly Considers Making Laptops

Nokia (NOK) CEO Olli-Pekka Kallasvuo today told the Finnish national broadcaster YLE that the company is considering entering the laptop business, according to Reuters.

“We are looking very actively also at this opportunity,” Kallasvuo reportedly said.

I think it's fairly certain that they won't make a normal x86 netbook - so, Maemo on more form-factors? Is that the reason why the "tablet" branding is going to be dropped? Because the Maemo range will not only be tablets anymore? Hmm...

Re: Seen this??: Nokia Sparrow

I'd go for a Maemo based convertible-tablet netbook .... say 7" or 9" screen.

Could probably even fit some things that different people yell for (dual full size SDHC card slots, different types of video out, 1.8" or 2.5" drive bay for HDD or SSD, PCI-Express Mini card for _optional_ WWAN, huge (relative to an N810) battery capacity, gobs more memory).

Yup, I'd buy one of those. Hopefully before 2011 though. Like, this year. If I knew it was coming, before the Asus T91's Ubuntu version (or the CTL 2Go tablet Linux version) is on the street, I'd probably wait for that as my spending target.

I can't cite an official Nokia source on this, but yes, they've said there'll be a device sometime this year; plans were 1st half of 2009, to be specific.

Besides, wouldn't it seem kind of silly to release a new OS, which is unsupported on current hardware, and not release new hardware for two years?!

Re: Seen this??: Nokia Sparrow

Wow, if Nokia does go into the laptop business, you can bet your bottom dollar I'll be getting one of those for review. A Nokia laptop would be such a hot item (at least at first for the pure novelty of it) that I and others would be silly not to review it. :)

A nokia laptop would be awful.

If you thought side talking was bad, think about raising your 14" monster to your ear :p

More rumors on this - http://www.rethink-wireless.com/?article_id=1089 According to this one, it is expected to be a netbook based on memo and incorporating elements from N800.

That looks like it's just a rehash of the same article.

Not only that, but they seem clueless as to the existence of the N810; they mention the N800, and even the "WiMAX version of the N800".

That actually is quite common in the blogsphere. Too many so called "experts" talking out their *** like they know something, and ultimately make real journalists like myself look bad. (*rolls eyes in frustration*) Sometimes it makes me wish that these guys would engage their brains before spewing half the nonsense they call news. *sigh* Sorry, pet peeve of mine. Didn't mean to rant.

Anywho, on the topic of the laptop, knowing Nokia, it'll most likely be a netbook. I don't think (and I say "don't think", as this is my opinion, and not based on any facts that I know of) they will go with a full sized one, given the type of devices they typically work with. I could be wrong, and I'd love to be, but I really feel that if they did do a laptop, it'll likely be a netbook.

<sarcasm>And also, I like the design of the tablet in the concept picture in the first post. If Nokia released the new tablet with a design like that, I'd be cool with that. :D</sarcasm>

Note: Post edited to include notations indicating when legitimate speech ended and sarcasm began since I committed an epic fail at sarcasm in the first attempt. ;)

have any URL's to it? I'd love to see it ... such a beast with Maemo would be quite nice.

allnameswereout: lol. I appear to have failed at my attempt at sarcasm in my last post. Or more specifically in my mention of "liking" the new tablet design. I probably should have added <sarcasm> tags to the beginning and end of that line to clarify when I had stopped being serious and when the sarcasm had kicked in. Ah well. Epic fail for me. hehe. I guess I'll just go back and edit my post for clarity.

inventec alaska, apparently...

at least, thats what it says in the text...

still, snapdragon is not omap3xxx, or even cortex. iirc, its a "boosted" variant of ARM design thats the basis for the TI omap2xxx found in current tablets.
