External USB keyboard?
 

How should I make external USB keyboard work? I have purchased a roll-up USB keyboard, a USB female-female adapter and now trying to connect it through the mini USB port to Nokia N810, however nothing works. Any suggestions?

You have put your internet tablet into host mode. There are several ways of doing this: http://www.internettablettalk.com/wi..._using_OS_2008
My favorite is the statusbar plugin at the bottom.

Ya know, I know you've already got the usb keyboard, but I tried one myself and found I didn't like it, it made the tablet flakey, and it didn't want to play nice. So I ended up getting this BlueTooth Palm Wireless keyboard, and aside from a slight case of user issue when I tried to pair it to my tablet (I need to learn to read directions better. ^_^;; heh.), it connected perfectly and worked great. In fact, it feels pretty natural, and is almost as comfortable to use as my regular keyboard. :D

One problem I've found if the rollable keyboards are left rolled for a while, when you use them some of the keys like to stay pressed. I try to keep mine flat now within a notebook in my travel bag. Sort of defeats the purpose of a rollable keyboard, but it also saves a bit of space this way.

Best way to go Host, IMO, is the EOS time sync widget. I only use it to switch from host to OTG or vice versa. Never really used it to sync time...

Or get a USB OTG cable/adapter... but if you've already got your cable and F-F adapter then the apps mentioned previously are probably going to do it for you. (Personally I've been using a roll-up USB keyboard with my N800 for over a year now and it's great, just plug the USB-OTG adapter into the keyboard and tablet, and brilliant, everything just works.

This Cable makes life much easier - microUSB to Female USB A. Automaticaly sets the USB to OTG.

I purchased the Nokia BT keyboard and was disappointed. Despite being pre-configured on the N810. It's operation was a major disappointment. The keyboard repeat rate settings don't work and I get numerious unwanted repeat characters. I purchased the above cable and a rollup keyboard. The rollup required very deliberate keypresses or key strokes were lost. I'm curious how well the Palm BT keyboard worked for Lord Raiden. I'm a writer and want to do drafts on the N810. I love the slide down keyboard for filed and command entry but it's not up to serious writing.

I recommend the Apple Wireless Keyboard. I know some of you be very anti-Apple, but the keyboard has the lovely soft keys taken straight from the Macbook, and is made out of anodised aluminium only about 3mm thick. And takes normal AA batteries. Mine was £40, and paired via bluetooth with my N800 (and even my PS3) perfectly.

That one is not a microUSB, it is a miniUSB. I don't think that is what you wanted.

I use the digikey item mentioned earlier (it's on page one... I clicked on the wrong reply), and a wireless Logitech keyboard from Walmart. It was just plug and play on the Maemo side. I could even alternate between the built in and the wireless. I didn't even have to worry about keyboard layout (I modded the rx-44 file to get pipe, curlys and whatnot).


Only issue is that something in EasyDebian (possible the Xephyr binary) doesn't want to play nice with multiple input devices. So there, I have to pick one keyboard layout and live with it.

Same cable also works for hooking up my USB key.

I recommend the same keyboard, very easy to configure and use, take small place when folded, and has a very good battery life.
