How many spare batteries do you have?

I'm just curious how many spare batteries other IT users have. Right now I have one that I swap out and then charge on my wall charger, convenient since it means I always have a fresh battery ready when my current one dies. I'm thinking of picking up a second spare for some traveling I'll be doing this summer, handy for those long airline flights. :)

So, how many spare batteries do you have? (Gadgets like those solar chargers count too, so if you have one please mention what you think of it.)

I have 4 batteries for my N800. Bought them so that I could continuously run my NIT all day while at jury duty (they have free WiFi).

Wow that's a lot Den! How do you charge so many batteries when you get back home again?

I had two batteries for my N800, but that's only because run time on the original battery had dropped to near zero. I kept it, but only used the new battery.

For my N810, I have a TekCharge MP1550. I purchased and used it for the Maemo Summit, but haven't used it since. I prefer it to the idea of swapping batteries though.

Normally 1 is charging in the NIT and 1 is charging in a charger that I bought on Ebay for about $10. Once that one is charged I rotate the other 2 batteries in that charger at home.

I have 1 in, 1 out and one in a 770 I mostly don't use.

Re: How many spare batteries do you have?

Three Nokia batteries for my N800. I anticipated needing more than one for all-day use, but havn't. Wall charger stays at home, USB to narrow Nokia power plug keeps it charged while at work. Extra batteries get used only on trips involving long flights or drives. Occasionally, I change batteries if the unit drains to near empty at less than -30C, as my impression is that batteries hold charge better if at room temp for a day before charging.

Re: How many spare batteries do you have?

One battery :-(. Buying a spare just seems too expensive. But as the original wears out, I'll probably buy another. Sometimes, my run time seems very short.

But I do have a solar charger for use when I'm traveling. So in c-cat's assesment, that makes two. www.solio.com

Re: How many spare batteries do you have?

Due to a warranty fiasco, I ended up getting a new tablet shipped to me, without having to send back the accessories of the old one... :P Thus, I have two batteries, and I've also bought a 1600mAh external rechargeable battery from IOGear ($30 on clearance). As I don't have an external charger for the second battery, I haven't used it yet. I always carry my second charger in my cargo pockets (along with a million other cables and adapters), and between that and the IOGear pack, I don't have much of an issue. I figured I'd save the spare battery unless I really need it, as I might feel like selling it at some point, and it has currently never been used.

I have two batteries, one in and one out. Although, I am thinking about picking up a Mugen high capacity battery.

1 Extra Battery... Mugen 3600mah extended battery.. Works great. Just did some travel last week, listened to Music and watched a couple of movies while I was stuck in BWI.. Then watched another movie and finished out the rip with music.. Battery life on the Mugen is amazing... I don't carry any others with me.. Had to get a DS case to fit the extended cover. I actually prefer the extended battery case that the mugen uses.. Easier to hold. Downside, I cannot use the stock car mount.. Oh, well.

I'd love to pick up a nice BP-4L as a spare, along with a good low cost charger. I tried to pick up one already, but that turned out to be the wrong one. Oh well. lol. If anyone needs a charger for an N95, I've got one. ^_^;;

Anywho, a spare battery for my NITs wouldn't be all that bad an idea. Then again, I can just pack my MP1550 along with me and just charge it anytime I have a moment to sit still for a bit.

I've got one that only lasts half as long as it's supposed to. I ordered a new one from ebay, but I received a sidekick shell instead and still have not gotten the battery. Where do you guys buy your batteries? Are the ebay ones high quality? I found bp-5l batteries there for $6-10. I also got a usb charger for $3, works good.

Beware of those ones that are so cheap, you'll usually end up getting what you paid for. :p

I would recommend only buying from reputable places, NEW, not used. I got mine from PC Connection, although I can't recommend them for speed (my battery was backordered for a month before they even shipped it) I did get a real Nokia battery which is worth the price premium in my opinion. :)

Re: How many spare batteries do you have?

I also have 2 batteries, since nokia replaced my defective n800 with a brand new unopened box (thus I also have plenty of styli and an extra cloth case). After two years, they're both starting to show their age, though a single battery can still easily make it through a day of heavy mp3 and radio listening and moderate web browsing. Since March 2007, I've yet to have a day when both batteries ran out.

Edit: I'd like to add that when they were new, each of my batteries could watch 2-3 hours of mediastreamer content at medium brightness. Now they are about 1:20-1:40 at low.

2 Nokia batteries, 1 Mugen 1800Mah and 1 fake Nokia I bought with a battery charger on Ebay.

Re: How many spare batteries do you have?

2 cheap no-name spares bought from a company I can't recall (not off ebay), plus the original nokia battery. all still work great ( = up to 2 hours use watching on-tablet video and/or web surfing and/or skype) at least 2 years on; I tend to swap them when/if one runs down, then leave it in place after that as usually I can just recharge - except on plane trips. an external charger sounds handy, but in truth I am able to find time to recharge them all before using up all 3 at once.

Re: How many spare batteries do you have?

I have no spare batteries for my N800, and there's a reason for that: I have spare batteries for other devices, including my main camera (where, due to replacements, I ended up with 3 batteries). Turns out I never use the spares, or at least extremely rarely. The only thing I get out of spare batteries is the knowledge that they are just now sitting in storage, slowly degrading as all lithium batteries do.

The battery I have in my N800 now is more than two years old and it's not as good as it was, so when I find a battery fresh from the factory (trying to avoid those with a long shelf-life behind them already), I'm not going to keep the old one as "spare": I'll give it to the shop instead (or another place where they accept stuff that can't be thrown in the garbage).

Wait a second. I didn't think the BP-5L was designed to work in the tablets. If it is, or it's compatible, what's the advantage of it?

Re: How many spare batteries do you have?

In my experience, cheap is just fine. I have a couple of slightly higher capacity batteries and I only use them now. They are very nice and I don't remember where I got them, but not ebay, which I am permanently boycotting. Just google and you will find similar deals.

I use a cheap charger I bought from ebay a couple of years ago.

I don't have spares for my N810.

It appears to me that when you buy cheap Hong Kong batteries, you are getting good quality batteries, as a rule. No one has reported their tablet damaged by a battery here, ever

Re: How many spare batteries do you have?

A friend of mine uses an external battery to recharge his iPhone. It is called "Just Mobile Gum PRO Mobile Power Pack 440", has an USB output 5V / 1000 mA and a capacity of 4.400 mAh. I think that combined with a USB charging cable (Nokia CA-100 or compatible from EBay) this can be an interesting alternative to using multiple batteries for the NIT, as it can also be used for other devices. My friend has told me that this Power Pack has a weight of 150 gr, which would be not much for carrying it around.

It works on the n800. I'm pretty sure it won't work on the n810. When I bought my battery from ebay I chose one that at least looks exactly like the one I already have.
It would be great if I actually get it in the mail now instead of a pink faceplate to a phone I don't have.

I've had nothing but dissapointment from a battery & charger combo I ordered off of ebay (details in this post). Buyer beware.

That sounds very interesting. I assume that this is the one you're talking about? I found it for sale here in Canada at Expansys for only $44 CDN. A lot less than the Mugen I was thinking of getting & it could be used for anything else (cel phone, bluetooth headset, etc). I just may order one for a trip I'm taking next month. Thanks for that.

You might also check Canadian Tire. According to other posters, Canadian Tire used to sell an older version of this device, the MP1500, under the Noma brand.

Also, just as a minor warning, the battery cover locking mechanism on my 1550 is a bit lazy, so I keep a rubber band wrapped around the whole device to keep it together. I found the 1550 on sale cheap enough that I'm not disappointed, but I thought others should know what they might be getting.

I picked up one of the Black & Decker CPI 100B (http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/AS...ctiveda8222-20) for $9 at a BD outlet while vacationing in Williamsburg, VA a week ago. It's bulky, but has both AC and USB out, and last 8-9 hours.

A little too bulky for my needs :), but a neat option for backpacking, etc. TX

Solio. Probably need to replace my battery cause I can't watch video for 2 hours. I can kill the battery on a single short YouTube video.

Re: How many spare batteries do you have?

One of the things I learned early on with the n810 was that, if you're going to use it for videos, have some kind of alternative power source nearby and start with a full battery, because if you don't, it's going to suck the soul out of your battery. 0.0

With my n800 it also happens with streaming audio. Wifi+audio seems to suck a lot of battery.

Streaming anything drains the battery more quickly as the tablet is unable to put the WiFi chip down for quick naps as it does during normal (i.e. web browsing) usage.

Re: How many spare batteries do you have?

haven't had it as bad with audio with built in media player, but at least I see I'm not the only one seeing massive battery drain with video.

3. 2 stock (one in use by Nokia E71). One Mugen. Its great because I can swap them around thus getting the device I need to get working to work. Usually that is the E71 though.

Re: How many spare batteries do you have?

Streaming audio sucks power, but vagalume seems to suck way less power than the internet radio application.

Lord Raiden 2009-03-19 18:07

Re: How many spare batteries do you have?

Well, I've found that, unless I'm on the move, if I'm doing something that sucks a lot of power, I either plug in the tablet, or attach a battery pack to it. That seems to do the job. It works well on flights too.

Re: How many spare batteries do you have?

OK, I have...
  • 2 spare Nokia batteries (originals, since I'm running Mugen 2.6Ah in an N800 and the N810)
  • 3 gearjuice USB batteries
  • 2 Cyberpower 4xAA USB hubs (which can be pressed into service as USB batteries)
  • 6 B&D PocketPower batteries (with 20W inverter, and USB)
I rarely carry around more than 3 of these at any one time, though; usually one or two of the big PocketPowers in my jacket, and a gearjuice in a pants pocket.

True, especially the PocketPowers, although they are sweet for running a soldering iron or glue-gun. Portable hardware hacking FTW!

I have 7 - 3 original and 4 cheapies that come with the desktop chargers on ebay.

From time to time I make 12 hour train journeys and I make sure that I have enough juice to keep me going for xvid films, ogg music, ebooks, wikipedia, etc.

For normal use, mostly I have one on charge and one in the device.

It is interesting to see that Mugen is recommended. When the times comes for a new battery I shall try one out.

Hey Rebski, in your experience just how long DO those el-cheapo knock off batteries last?

Longer than I would expect, about 75% of the standard nokia. They are really there just for exceptional circumstances and sit in the bottom of the carry case so the Nokia's get used first and the journey tends to be over before they are spent.

I didn't specially buy them but they came with the desktop charger which is an invaluable accessory imho.
