any way to uninstall mer?
i'm tired of Mer. is there anyway to uninstall it?
currently, its running on my n810 and is located on a 4gb micro sd. |
Re: any way to uninstall mer?
I'm not quite sure what you mean. Mer isn't installed into Maemo, so you can simply remove or reformat the drive that Mer is on and you can use that drive for whatever you'd like after that.
You can remove the Mer installer from Maemo if you go into the Application Manager and remove it as you would any program. You can remove the customized bootmenu by downloading the latest Maemo and flasher-3.0 utility and then flashing the original initfs to the tablet. To do this, make sure that flasher-3.0 is executable (you can type "chmod a+x flasher-3.0" from terminal) shut down your tablet and then hold down the home button while hitting the power button on the tablet until a little USB icon appears in the top right hand corner of the tablets screen. Then type this command in the terminal of linux (from the same directory that flasher-3.0 is downloaded to): sudo ./flasher-3.0 -f -F RX-44_DIABLO_5.2008.43-7_PR_COMBINED_MR0_ARM.bin --flash-only=initfs -R |

Re: any way to uninstall mer?
ok, I think I screwed up somewhere.
I flashed my N810 which had Mer installed but now my Internal memory total size is still 196.9MB, same as when Mer was there. How can I get back my 2Gb internal memory? |

I noticed the instructions you gave for removing the customized bootmenu are for a Linux desktop. Since I have a Windows desktop, would I be able to just reflash the N810 and restore a pre-Mer backup to get my data back (without restoring the bootmenu)? -- Chris |
Re: any way to uninstall mer?
Before doing a reflash, backup your data apps and things with the Backup/Restore application in the Settings Menu. Also, make sure anything you don't want being erased, like important documents, music and stuff are all saved on the external card.

Re: any way to uninstall mer?
Since I can't live without bootmenu so I never looked into uninstalling it but, if I had to I always thought I could do that from the app manager. Would it not uninstall that way? I don't remember the last time reflashed since that boot only to install mer and edit bootmenu. Otherwise, I don't mess with it.

Re: any way to uninstall mer?
It doesn't look like bootmenu uninstalls via Maemo Application Manager. I still get all the bootmenu messages after removing Mer and uninstalling the Mer install and Bootmenu via Application Manager. The boot status bar for Maemo is now gone as well. Looks like I'm reflashing if I want to get rid of everything. I have Ubuntu running on my notebook, but I'm still way too intimidated by Linux. I'll just do the complete reflash and restore my data.

Re: any way to uninstall mer?
As already said: use the --flash-only option.
The easiest way to do it in linux: download flasher-3.0 and the latest firmware from tablets-dev.nokia.com and put em in your home directory. Open up the terminal and copy-paste following in: first Code:
chmod +x flasher-3.0 Code:
sudo ./flasher-3.0 -f -F RX-44_DIABLO_5.2008.43-7_PR_COMBINED_MR0_ARM.bin --flash-only=initfs -R That will flash only the bootmenu (initfs) |
Re: any way to uninstall mer?
Thanks, I think I will try that the next time. I already did the complete reflash via WinXP and restored my backup. It was actually a good experience, because three apps (Seqretary, usb-otg-plugin, and -- believe it or not -- Tear) did not restore properly or at all. For Tear, I lost all my settings and bookmarks. It's good to know that I can't do a complete restore just using the Backup utility that comes with OS2008. I think I'll start manually backing up the .tear folder as well.
I think if I'm going to keep using this wonderful little NIT that I need to get more familiar with Linux on something other than just the NIT. Time to commit my notebook 100% to Ubuntu or something -- it's the only way I'm going to eventually get as comfortable with Linux as I am with WinXP. Thanks again. -- Chris |
Re: any way to uninstall mer?
I back up mine any time I want to, it takes only 2-3min, hardly ANY excuse NOT to back up. And yes, its a ghost image of your working tablet, it backsup everything.
BTW, Meizirkki's suggestion about the boot menu is a good one. Or, this one works too. None of them disturb the working tablet in anyway. bun |
