Browser font size...
Is there any way to just increase the font size used in the browser with out using the 'zoom' function - this appears to increase image scaling as well as the font size and sometimes screws up page viewing.
I was thinking maybe some config file needs editing or something! Ravi |

/home/user/.opera/opera.ini Find the entry that says: Minimum Font Size=(some number) and replace (some number) with your preference. I use 18. |
Thanks!
I'm off to try it out now! Ravi |
did it work?
|
I was "evesdropping." I tried it and it worked fine. Most useful. These forums are great. I would never have thought this was possible, and it sure is necessary for someone like me (and maybe everyone) who gets tired of squinting, yet losing so much of the page when zooming in. Many thanks.

Glad I could help, but I'm not the one who discovered this "feature". A quick search of the forum should give more information on who discovered it first.
And just a reminder: hardly any problem with the 770 is a first one these days, most of the time a search quickly yields the solution. So let's not forget to use that search button, kids! |
great hint. It's a pleasure to read now. I set it to 14 point.

Did a search on fonts which led me to opera.ini but still didn't find it. So, if possible could someone direct me or tell me how to edit it to enlarge the font? Thanks
P.S. I'm using the new 2006 OS |

I use Midnight Commander, which is a console-based application, so you need to have Xterm installed as well. Midnight Commander is both a file manager and an editor (and so many things more); people who use it tend to claim it's easy to use, but don't let us fool you: it takes some getting used to. On ITOS 2005 I used Leafpad, which is a nice editor, but I have no idea whether it has been ported to ITOS 2006 (yet). |
I have Xtem but don't have Midnight Commander. Can I get that from the Apps section of this site?

http://www.komputika.net/maemo/ (the file you need is: mc_4.6.1-2_armel.deb ) I can't remember what dependencies are needed for the program, but you can do what I usually do: run the installer and wait for error messages to come up (if any). I bet that, if any libraries are missing from your system, you can find them on the same site. For additional information, go to http://maemo.org/maemowiki/ApplicationCatalog2006 and check out the comments on the Midnight Commander entry. You might want to bookmark that last address... |
Thanks (yet) again Karel !!

Sorry to be such a pain but I installed it but cant see a sign of it anywhere! Is it supposed to appear under the tools menu or somewhere else or do I launch it from someplace else?
Many thanks Ravi |
you need to type 'mc' in xterm.
|
Open Xterm and type "mc" (without the quotes), followed by <return>.
Midnight Commander is a console app and does not show up in the lists. One caveat: you can navigate through mc's window with the cursor pad, but only the virtual keyboard's <return> key works for selecting stuff (the center button of the cursor pad turns the virtual keyboard on or off). I haven't tried mc with my bluetooth keyboard yet, so I don't know if that works. The menu options at the bottom of the mc screen can be selected with the stylus. Also, the only way I know of to end mc, is by closing the Xterm window (the "x" in the top right corner). Happy hacking. |
WooHoo!
Got it to work and as if by magic, my eyes are not watering and bloodshot anymore. lol! Many thanks Ravi |
Re: Browser font size...
Thanks - Minimum Font Size = 14 works like a charm :)
:) |
Re: Browser font size...
OK, since someone bumped this prehistoric thread back to top, I'd like to add something about Midnight Commander I only found out today:
It is possible to "properly" close mc without killing the Xterm. Normally, mc closes by hitting the F10 key, or by clicking the "F10" button on the screen. However, in normal zoom, the "F10" button doesn't show up on the 770/N800's screen; you have to unzoom to 80% to see it. Oh, and click it to end the program, obviously... |
Re: Browser font size...
Also, hitting the Escape key twice, then a number, emulates the corresponding function key (and esc-esc-0 is F10 :-)

Re: Browser font size./Midnight Commander..
When using Midnight Commander (THANKS!!), is there a way to keep the display keyboard from popping up, after you scroll through each directory? It is somewhat annoying.

I can view the line "minimum font size=7" but cannot change it.
What am I doing wrong? |

If you didn't, mc always defaults to the file viewer, which deceptively looks like the editor, until the unsuspecting user tries to change something. It's just UNIX's way of trying to be funny... :o |
Re: Browser font size...
Thanks. Got it now. Much better.

I know something about wine but have no idea where I could locate the file /home/user/.opera/opera.ini. Way too technical for me. Kindly take me by the hand. |
Re: Browser font size...
1- Use Xterm to get to command prompt.
2- Use an editor like vi or MC to edit that file. 3- Save the changes. 4- Done. |
Re: Browser font size...
Thanks for the advice. I'm very new to the 770 and still learning. Where do I get Xterm from etc.? Vi, MC? Means Chinese to me, sorry.

Teaching you how to use both is beyond the scope of this forum. May I suggest either a good beginners' book on Linux -- or just use the zoom keys. |
