palm/gvm browsers?

2 Attachment(s)
With the new found SD support, http://talk.maemo.org/showthread.php?t=14391, #29, and stability (wait 15 s or more once exit from gvm before re-start), I love my palm apps. To install palms apps, I have to dl on PC and winSCP to my tablet, gvm and install, too crumsy. Now I am using Pocketlink, an OK browser, go directly to the mobile site on gvm, dl .prc and install from gvm directly. I would like to have a better browser, as Pocketlink is very limited. What browser are you using on the gvm? URL? TIA,

bun

Edit: How do I post pics in the right orientation as well as bigger? I hate the way it posted, TIA,

Edit2: On any palm apps, what is the button to 'go back'? I use the hardware escape button, it always crash the system :(

Edit3: I found it, it is the little house icon on the lower left corner, that is the palm 'go back' key. I am learning something new every minute, like a newborn baby, yahoo!

No, it's just a freeware file explorer. That's not what you are looking for in your original posting.

I didn't try any palm browser in gvm yet. I'm heavily using opera mini on my palms. I like the mobile view and the reduced amount of data. But you need a java environment. I don't know, if the IBM WebSphere MicroEnvironment (which palm is not allowed to distribute any longer) works on gvm. AFAIK there exists no other Java VM for Palm OS.

Re: palm/gvm browsers?

you don't need to install programs in gvm anymore...
you can just copy the .prc files to SD-CARD:\\PALM\Launcher and the programs files like .pdb files to SD-CARD:\\PALM\Programs.
so you can do the whole procedure in maemo.
also if gvm crashes now you don't need to install all programs again. they are still there, because they are installed on the sd-card

I got one of those IBM Microbump. No, it does not work on gvm yet. If only we can get Opera mini going... :(

Really? OMG, that is important to know. I will try...so, all .prc goes to SD-CARD and all else goes to Programs. That is easy, I will give it a try. That is really really really neat, THANK YOU. I think Pushwall tried to tell me, but I was NOT listening :-)

I did find out, that, one can manually add .prc to the winPCdesktop ACCESS install tool, upon sync with gvm, ALL progs re-installed without a glitch.

And reformat the Storage heap will re-surrect hotsync, but it will also wipe out your progs too :(. Still it is good to know how to get a sync.

BOY, I am having a ball with gvm today...............why there are so many threads about, uh, N8x0 is NOT working here, not working there, boring, poor functioning, on and on like a broken recorder :-) ? After owning the tablet for 15 month, I am still exploring its capability, thank you Nokia :o

Re: palm/gvm browsers?

Hey, the whole gvm community listen: zehjotkah is RIGHT! All one has to do is to copy, by whatever means you can, .prc to the SD card, \Palm\Launcher, and the app will run, no need for gvm installation...well, most of the time. Thank you zehjotkah. Two exceptions, if the app requires data dl from a server or requires a particular library, one still have to do installation via gvm. However, most of the apps, if it is a stand-alone.prc, you can just go! WOW. And of course, they would NOT wipe-out on a crash.

A little bit recap for the totally uninitiated, or for my own sake if I have to follow myself in the future :)

To create SD cards slots,

mkdir ~/.gvm/cards #only have do it once
echo -e "/media/mmc1\nRW" > ~/.gvm/cards/0 #SD-1
echo -e "/media/mmc1\nRW" > ~/.gvm/cards/1 #SD-2 and etc
echo -e "/media/mmc1\nRW" > ~/.gvm/cards/2
echo -e "/media/mmc1\nRW" > ~/.gvm/cards/3
echo -e "/media/mmc1\nRW" > ~/.gvm/cards/4
echo -e "/media/mmc1\nRW" > ~/.gvm/cards/5
echo -e "/media/mmc1\nRW" > ~/.gvm/cards/6
echo -e "/media/mmc1\nRW" > ~/.gvm/cards/7

I think you can have upto 8 SD cards, I am using SD-1 and SD-2 and they work beautifully.

Once the cards are created, I use Zlauncher to assess them.

Disable the HotSync backup conduit -- seems to be choking on > 64 KiB records. I though Palm fixed that long ago.
(HotSync Manager -> Settings -> Applications -> Uncheck "Backup")

Am I missing something? I have tried a couple apps that download data from the internet via usb cable with my T3. But when I try it using GVM I get a DNS error. I can't find any network setting in the preferences either. How can I connect in GVM using the N800's WIFI?

Thanks.

What web browser are you using? Or how do you get to the net in gvm, FTP? I am using a very primitive/limited web browser called
pocketlink. It allows me to to a website and do my dl and that is it, all text links, no graphic, absolutely primitive.

MegaLauncher and Agendus can get weather and quote updates on its today screen if it has an internet connection.

How do you get GVM to recognize the Nokia network?

Machster 2009-06-06 14:55

Re: palm/gvm browsers?

I think I answered my own question. Up until this point I had been unable to access the internet in GVM. I installed Xiino and it found the web without any config. At the same time other apps, including my alternate browsers can now also access.

Good post for the Xiino solution. Thanks.

Bun,

What advantage is there in having more than one SD slot?

bunanson 2009-06-07 18:27

Re: palm/gvm browsers?

Not quite sure.

I am guessing, one corruption does not kill ALL and organizing, or maybe there is a cap on the capacity for one then now you can have 8? I dont know. I use only 2, slot1 and slot2 for organizing and conveniency

Another topic. I installed TCPMP and works somewhat OK. The strange thing is it crash upon loading, every now and then!!! It does not crash all the time and it does not load all the time. I just finished installing. And it wont load, it crashed. I couple hours later, I was bored, I clicked it, and it loaded and open and run! I done with it, and closed it, and now it wont load. Witchcraft! Pockettune 5.0.0 just refuse to load, be it on slot1 or ram.

javispedro 2009-06-08 11:35

Re: palm/gvm browsers?

There is no cap, other than individual file size limit.

You can also make each slot point to a different "host" directory.

bunanson 2009-07-09 05:14

Re: palm/gvm browsers?

Very disappointed, I ran into a cap of ~580 Mb on slot 0. Not quite sure about other slots.

Which kind of cap?

Native PalmOS has a card size limit of 4 GiB, much greater than ~580MiB. But GarnetVM is not using the PalmOS FAT driver, but rather just pointing the VFSFile* PalmOS functions to the Linux' open, read, write, close, etc. ones. So there can't be a cap.

E.g. I have two slots, 0 and 1, respectively mapped to mmc1 and mmc2. The first one has nearly 1 GiB of data (including MyDocs, navicore maps, and program data). The second one has nearly 3 GiB of data, including pictures, videos, and music, and even DocumentsToGo indexes its whole contents.

If you're talking about the FILE size limit instead, then I don't know. Native PalmOS is said to be capped at ~120MiB.

bunanson 2009-07-09 13:47

Re: palm/gvm browsers?

I am talking about slot cap size limit, not file size. I have a file 570 Mb in slot 0 and it reported 13 kB space left. I deleted the file, it still has only 13 kb space. I am going to remove and recreate the card, see whether that would regain space. For the time being I made slot1 and finished my backup from rescoExplorer.

Recently I noticed, I can no longer launch gvm thru xterm,

/user/bin/gvm/gvm -a applicationfile

It pointed me to the perference and failed to see any apps......weird. I used to be able to do that. Not quite sure where to look. The only difference is I am NOT installing gvm, instead, I cloned the whole OS, but that should not make any difference, should it?

bun

javispedro 2009-07-09 14:02

Re: palm/gvm browsers?

Unless you have any app checking for free space before allowing you to write files (in which case you're in trouble), you can safely ignore the free space value PalmOS gives.
As I said, PalmOS itself is limited to 4GiB so it gives funny values if card/slot size is > 4 GiB.

bunanson 2009-07-09 14:31

Re: palm/gvm browsers?

Yes, RescoExplore Backup check space and prompted "space is not enough for backup, go ahead anyway?" I chickened out. I would now proceed and see what happens.

It goes that page whenever it crashed. It has no meaning. I start another xterm, it works.

OK, I have only gotten into the xterm once and that was a copy/paste thing...so with the above info, it doesn't look quite right to me for another copy and paste.

FYI, I only want to access my NIT's 4GB SD Card so with that, what do I just open xterm and paste in?

Sorry, but I have learned it is better to clarify than rush in...

It's always best to be sure of something.

So here it is. Highlight then copy this.

mkdir ~/.gvm/cards
echo -e "/media/mmc1\nRW" > ~/.gvm/cards/0

Open X Terminal.

Select Paste. You might need to press [Return] if both commands aren't executed.

You will now have a PALM/Launcher folder on your 4 Gig SD card.

So easy a caveman can do it. :)

Well, this is a little off topic for this thread, but yeah, audio is much better in this version.

I tried the trial version of Ultimate Bowling Fighter yesterday and was surprised to hear sound coming from both speakers.

It might have been just me with some funky settings but all of the previous beta versions of Garnet VM, I only had sound coming from the right speaker.

I'm very impressed with this latest release. It just feels more refined. :)

Ok. here is my situation/problem:

I am in a N810 cloned to my external 16GB SD
I have installed GMV runing fine including my Hotsync.

However I want to try the Zlaucher so I started by above.

First of all and before doing the above, I don't see in my file manager any folder named Palm, GMV, Launcher.

After doing the above (I used cmm2 because I want to use my internal SD) my Xterm didn't complain, so I assumed it went OK.
However, still I don't see any new folder.

Aside that, to install zlauncher, I can use Hotsync? I should hotsync all the prc files included in the Zip file I downloaded?

Sorry if those are dumb questions.

Thank you anyway.

Re: palm/gvm browsers?

Hi, I have more info.

I tried to create .gvm/cards/0 but this time in mmc1, in case I am having problems with mmc2.

I started with mkdir command and the answer was that .gvm/cards already exist. That is telling me that it worked the first time.

I'd like to know if I should be able to see it or I need to install Zlauncher first so I will find slot 1 and slot 2.

Thank you

Hi guys, it looks like nobody is coming back to this thread.
Just in case, I want to add that I Hotsync ZLaunch, it got installed fine, but there is nothing of Slot 1 or Slot 2 in the tabs.

I believe I need to install it in a different way.

Thank you
