BlueMaemo and Playstation 3
 

Hello,

some users requested a better PS3 support from BlueMaemo, I'm tempted to make a PS3 profile, but I don't have a PS3 and don't know which features a PS3 profile should have, so I'm open to suggestions.
I also accept icons suggestions and mockups of the profile, ugly drawings are just fine :) .

I've got a friend babysitting my PS3 right now, when I get it back in a week or two, I'll have a play around, compare BlueMaemo to how a USB keyboard and mouse work, and post my recommendations.

Granted I don't use PS3 with Bluemaemo much, but when I used it last to browse the web I was able to connect and use the on screen mouse and keyboard very well. I had no problems doing a reconnect either. Is there anything specific I should be looking to do/try out that would help apart from icon requests etc?

If I recall correctly, F1-F5 act as some of the buttons on the controller (traingle, square, start, select, and L1 I think). And escape is circle, I seem to remember going back to the previous menu when using BlueMaemo was a pain due to the lack of this button. It's stuff like this you need to look out for, mobiledivide. Oh, and the middle mouse button acted kinda like the PS button.

the "home" kb button acts as the ps3 button. if this could be added that would be great.

Right, ok, this is what I've got from just fiddling about on the PS3:

F1 = Triangle
F2 = Square
F3 = Select
F4 = Start
Enter = X
Esc = O
Windows key = PS button
Arrows = d-pad

Also, I plugged my PS3 controller into the PC, and got these numbers from each of the buttons. I don't know if you'd be able to use these to actually make a gamepad profile. Anyway, the left analogue stick is the X/Y axis, and the right analogue stick is the Z axis. The d-pad is 8 way and comes up as Point of View Hat (?). Anyway, the buttons:

1: Triangle
2: Circle
3: X
4: Square
5: L2
6: R2
7: L1
8: R1
9: Select
10: L3 (Left analogue click)
11: R3 (Right analogue click)
12: Start

The PS button doesn't work on the gamepad in USB mode, but I'm sure the Windows key could be used for that.

Hi All,

Wasn't too sure whether to post this here or in this thread.

Basically, I'm due to receive an N900 when they are released - can't wait! - and would love to use BlueMaemo as a bluetooth keyboard for my PS3.

But I had an idea, have no idea if it's possible, but could the screen be used as a mouse touchpad, just like on a laptop but for the PS3? Utilising the usual tap and double-tap methods (actually, does ps3 use double-tap?!).

Just so you know I'm moving from Nokia N95 long time Sybmian S60 user with very little knowledge of Linux, or even how to program for Linux.

I'm a competent VBA developer and understand programming basics/priniciples, so am hoping to be able to learn some stuff for Maemo once the N900 is released!

I couldn't get the PS3 controller profile to work. Clicking on it did nothing.

Isn't implemented in the maemo4 version yet. I'm not sure what features/buttons should it provide.

Is it implemented in the Maemo 5 version, which is the one I tried?

List of buttons that should be implemented include d-pad, start, select, square, X, circle, triangle, L1 and R1. Those are at least the main buttons with important features anyways.

The version in -devel is old and broken(was made before I get my hands in an N900 ;)), the connection methods are already improved, so should be easier to connect to an PS3, the code is already in place, need to decide about the graphics.

Thanks. Does those fits most of the usage of a remote ? like control music/video ?

P.S -> I'll upload a alpha version this week to -devel, in order to get feedback about the connnection methods, since I don't have an PS3 or MAC to test it.

Not really. Some have standard functions and others change depending on where you are on the PS3. Triangle is always a context menu. In most territories, X is confirm and O is Cancel, but in Japan, they are swapped.

I think what would be best is not to worry about the functions too much. Just allow the PS3's on-screen prompts tell the user what does what, much like it does already with a regular controller.

A layout like the below would be the most natural.

What's also really important IMO is the Playstation Button... It is located right below "Select" and "start"

This button turns the playstation on and trigger the menu where you can exit application or close the playstation.

This should really be in there if that's possible, it would be a shame not to be able to switch the PS3 on with the N900 :)

That's it; I'm moving to Japan. For years my wife and I have complained Sony had the roles of those two buttons backwards. Nice to know it's just us living in the wrong country.

I believe it's swappable somewhere in the configuration options for the PS3. I know that you could so the same thing with the PSP with a flash hack... but yes, it's backwards compared to Japan.

Testing version[1] available at Extras-devel, I'm specially interested in testers for the connection/paring stuff.

[1] - Alpha version - Unfinished UI and the hw keyboard isn't working due to a bug in the EFL library(HintFocus).

Cool can't wait for my n900 to come to start testing and having control of my PS3!!! It would be cool to add the video control profile in there. I'm more than glad to help where possible.

Not sure if this is possible, but it would be awesome to be able to be using the controller for gaming, then use the keyboard on the n900 for typing in chat or messages in game.

Any chance or am I dreaming?

There's a alpha version at extras-devel, dunno if it works fine with the PS3, since I didn't received any feedback so far :(

If you can do it with a regular BT keyboard, you also will be able to do it with BlueMaemo.

Oh, but there's how many games you don't need joysticks for?

Unreal tournament three supports mouse + keyboard, but i think that's it :p



I have N900 + PS3, but after i managed to get them to link..

nothing!

I dunno what's up, but nothing i do with my N900 actually does anything to ps3, besides (dis)connecting it.

I'm up for testing and helping you do this, and i've also got a suggestion; PS3's don't have "names" so could you just make "PS3" pop-up automatically, and we can re-name it later? It's just that i didn't know i was looking at the list of connected devices until i realised my ps3 was there, i simple couldn't see it!

Lol, do you want to replace your wireless&fantastic PS3 controller by a N900 to play games ?
My intention is only to browse and control media in a simpler/easier way + a keyboard to chat/better input.

No sure if I understood what you want, but yes I forgot about the names thing, it was already reported by other user[1], thanks for the reminder.
Can you share the steps that you're doing ?

I tried it with my new new ps3. I could use use the keyboard and gamepad mode. the game pad mode has a .5-1 second lag.
couldn't cnnect in "ps3 control" mode. when i clicked on the icon nothing happened.
But its a really cool app. Thanks!

Don't know but perhaps the PS3 has some options for the keyboards like repeat rate and delay, try to tune those options if possible.

This profile is not implemented in the version available in the repository, next version will have it.

That's a screenshot not a mockup ;)
The PS3 logo has legal rights, don't know if I can use it without problems :p

For what do you need those buttons ?

The Hw keyboard bug need to be fixed directly in the EFL library, will happen but is out of my control :(.

L3 R3 buttons? just cos the ps3 remote has it :P

do you have any ides why my n900 cant actually communicate with my ps3?
they both recognise eachother and say they're connected, but none of the button presses on my n900 do anything on the ps3!!

I just wanted to check if v0.3.8 is the latest build?

i'm not sure if someone previously mentioned, but:

enter = X
esc = O
f1 = triangle
f2 = square
f3 = select
i'm sure you get the point, and to get a functional d-pad, you go to the numbers entry (under keyboard) then to symbols, and hidden away are the up, down, left and right buttons!

working great, but would love that promised "ps3 controller functionality"!

I cannot get this to work with my PS3 :(

The pairing is sucseccfull, the device appears connected on the PS3 but after, nothing !

No Mouse ...no keyboard ... nothing ... any clue ?

Can be related to the different PS3 version, but since I don't have one to test is hard to guess :(
