My new N810 is faulty?

First, Hi! I've been lurking for a while.

I just received my new N810, and the thing it's supposed to be best at, it can't seem to do. In three hours it has only successfully opened four web pages. Most pages it just says 'connecting' and never starts to load - including the maemo.org page. I'm submitting this message from a μ$ machine. In addition, it can't apparently play streaming audio on the couple of radio station webpages I did manage to open.

My network is 128bit WEP encrypted. The About page on the N810 says I'm running version 2008.5.2008.43-7. I've tried disconnecting/reconnecting the network, powering off, removing the battery. I just can't seem to connect to the internet reliably.

So, do I send this back? Am I missing a setup step? I'm assuming this isn't normal.

Also, assuming this get's sorted, how do you pull up the onscreen keyboard?

I guess first try to flash it with the update wizard -- see if problem persists

Re: My new N810 is faulty?

Thanks GeraldKo, while I was messing with it, I thought of how I sorted a similar problem on an Acer Netbook. I found the power settings for the WLAN chip and turned power saving off. It seems to have helped alot. I can see Maemo.org now :D

Any thoughts on playing streaming audio or opening the on screen keyboard?

Do you have an example problem site?

...or opening the on screen keyboard?
  1. Open the application menu.
  2. Tap "Settings".
  3. In the Settings sub-menu that opens, tap "Control panel".
  4. In he Control Panel application that opens, double-tap "Text input settings".
  5. In the "Text input" window that opens, tap the "On-screen" tab.
  6. In the On-screen tab, make sure:
    • "Enable stylus input methods" is checked
    • "Launch finger keyboard" is set to "With finger"
  7. Tap the "OK" button.
  8. Close the Control Panel.

Re: My new N810 is faulty?

That got it! Thanks sjgadsby!

Now I'm down to the streaming audio question, and a new one on how to get the GPS to connect.

Y'all are great!

Re: My new N810 is faulty?

the streaming radio problem will most likely come down to an issue of codecs (the website is probably using evil proprietary windows or realplayer codecs) - do you have an example webpage?

Re: My new N810 is faulty?

overfloat, thx for your reply!

Here are two the base websites that the stream is selected from that i've tried:
http://www.thai-radio.com/radio.html
http://www.klif.com/ (I think they're silverlite)

BTW, I've tried loading the Access Garnet VM suite, mCalender, and the GPE calender. Are there any trustworthy calendar/alarm apps for the N810?

I'm sure it's obvious, but I've been away from Linux (and even Unix) for quite awhile (in the evil corporate proprietary world).

Re: My new N810 is faulty?

Ok, here's what you've gotta do

open your thai radio page - you need to get the direct links to your radio stations eg -
http://www.thai-radio.com/asx/thai-h...915-dwe45r.asx

(i have mplayer setup in the default microB web browser so i cant say the exact steps to get the link to the file on a default installation but there should be something like 'copy link', although to be honest - i got this link off my laptop because it was faster)

open the default media player - click the menu -> clip -> add media bookmark

name it whatever you want and paste the link (in my case, http://www.thai-radio.com/asx/thai-h...915-dwe45r.asx) into the web address

make sure type is set to internet radio

then it will add the station to your favorites under internet radio, enjoy

dont hold out for the silverlight one...

Re: My new N810 is faulty?

OK. i'll admit it - i'm bored - so i checked the page source...

add this link as a media bookmark in media player

mms://live.cumulusstreaming.com/KLIF-AM

and you will have your talk radio station

If I install mplayer, which I plan to do anyway, will that automatically make it the default in my web browser? If so will the links play directly, or do I still need to put them into the player?

Thx for being bored! I'll try these when I get home (the N810 died overnight. It had a full charge, I had shut down bluetooth, wifi and the only app I left running was the GPE calendar :( ).

Re: My new N810 is faulty?

You might want to get a new battery then. My used internet tablet was only giving me 1 hour of use but I bought a new battery and it gave me the normal 3+ hours of use.

mplayer doesnt have the codecs necessary to play these streams. regarding the battery: turn off any of the 'home' applets that are running on your desktop, most of them suck the life out of your battery. The only applet i use is om weather. also, lock your screen and keys

Taking a look at the webpage, I don't see how you found the direct link to the radio stations? I'd like to be able to do that with other stations also. Thanks again.

I did it on my laptop using ubuntu with firefox and the totem movie player plugin. when you play a video or radio station you can right click and press something like 'copy' or 'copy location' and paste it somewhere to see the link

i forgot to add... the links are something like cid:///asx/123.asx

i dont know what this means, i'm not a web developer BUT

replacing 'cid:///' with 'http://www.thai-radio.com/' makes it a direct link

cr*p. I just installed firefox on my vista (gag) machine and looked for totem movie player. It apparently only works on free world machines. I'll see if I can install it on the n810.

edit: no I won't. u can't right click on an n810. Double bummer.

windows media player doesnt give you some sort of 'copy location' option? what happens if you try to save the stream? does it show the link?

It only opens in a web page, and only shows an html link. I've looked at source as well, and I can't find the asx files you're finding.

BTW overfloat, I used the link to klif you gave me yesterday to listen to the DRamsey show. Thanks max!

Yaser, I installed mPlayer, which KMplayer apparently need, then KMplayer. In a browser I went to the radio website I like, but I still can't play the stations.

Edit: I also tried opening the link in KDplayer, no joy.

overfloat,
I really appreciate this. You must be really bored lol.

I'm still looking for tools to be able to do this myself from a windoze machine or the n810.

Re: My new N810 is faulty?

You could try using the VLC plugin for firefox and IE

Re: My new N810 is faulty?

So, gman1, can we conclude that your new N810 is _not_ faulty? We're all much happier when it turns out that new devices aren't broken after all :)
