Wow got my N800 today!!!!!

I wanted one so badly last year but they were being phased out and people were buying 3, 4, 5 at a time pissing me off! Now I got this demo unit for $120 on eBay sooner than I thought. I just booted it up and aaaaah I can't wait! I got 1.5 hrs until I have to leave for work :(

Pop in a couple of inexpensive, full size 16GB SD cards, and load 'em up with lots of video and music... :D

Yep 'm gonna get an 8gb card.

Hey question though. What is the internet one for (the Mini-SD) - memory or storage, or either? How about external?

I notice the Mini-SD is 128 MB, I have a Micro-SD with adapter thats 256 MB. Can I toss that in there?

Congrats it's a fine device !

Maybe you confuse between the internal storage memory and the 2 SD slots (1 internal and 1 external)

Softwares does install in an internal memory not in the SDs. I think there is a way to install softs on SD too but never needed it.

- Internal and external SD can be used for anything you want. Basically, the internal one could get your basic documents and your music library, and so you could keep the external SD for exchanging datas.
For example, the tablet makes a good picture reader/ storage if your camera is SD based, and if you put a big SD in internal slot. Then you can manage your pictures, select, trash, copy it in your tablet ...

You can use normal SD/ SDHC, or mini, or micro, with adapters.

For the most part, you're open to using either slot for whatever data you like. Organize your files on the two cards as you see fit. The only minor difference between the two slots is that if you turn on virtual memory (a swap file), that hidden file is created on the internal card.

Having a swap file on the internal card does mean that if you're running a number of applications on your N800 when you plug the tablet into your computer via USB, the N800 might not be able to let your computer access the internal card. The N800 will display an error message on screen in that case.

Yes. Your N800 will accept any SD or SDHC card, and with the appropriate adapter, it will also work with any miniSD/SDHC or microSD/SDHC.

Re: Wow got my N800 today!!!!!

The beauty of the N800 is that you don't need the more expensive mini or micro SD cards. The full size SD cards are really cheap these days.

I put the SD card that I want to partition for alternative operating systems into my "internal" slot, and I put media on the "external" card, so I can pop it out and share with other devices.

I suggest you buy a dedicated SD card, as big as you can afford, and stuff it in the internal slot. You can put the cards with adapters in the other slot.

Re: Wow got my N800 today!!!!!

I powered it on, it said battery needed to be charge d- it shut off. So I plugged in the AC, no power. Tried 3 differe outlets, nothing.

I read on here to put it in fridge for 10 - 15 minutes so it cools and it tends to power on? I'm trying that - it's in a towel.

Re: Wow got my N800 today!!!!!

wait !!!!!
just let it charge first, if battery is very very low, maybe it just need to be charged before the device can wake up ?

Well, happy for you then !

How do you like the N800 so far ?
Is it your first Nokia Internet Tablet ?

Re: Wow got my N800 today!!!!!

Update the firmware and you won't have to put it in the fridge. Do it now as you won't have nothing much on it and therefore not much to lose as an update deletes everything.

I wouldn't risk using a fridge with a very expensive gadget, but as you only paid $120 for it... maybe it's exactly the kind of thing that's worth trying wacky experimental fixes on. :-)

Once you got it booted and charged... you should flash the firmware to the latest before you do anything with it: There is a known problem with older firmwares that cause the power up problem you just described.

EDIT: Qwerty12 beat me to it... :p

Re: Wow got my N800 today!!!!!

qole mentioned something that's not brought up very often, that the external SD slot is hot-swappable.

On a separate issue, Is there anything that can be done -- short of rebooting the device -- to get consistent USB access to the internal card? Almost every time I have used:

Code:

lsof /media/mmc2
(list open files), I get no files listed, so I'm wondering if there's anything that can be done.

Joe.

Run lsof as root to see moar open files and I find running 'swapoff /media/mmc2/.swap' helps. If not, then I kill sftp-server & metalayer-crawler.

As soon as you flash, download Canola2. Great application.

Re: Wow got my N800 today!!!!!

Yep I had to charge it all first. I just got off work so I can put OS2008 on it. Trust me I've been watching these tablets for a year, there's a lot I'm gonna do with it!

My first Nokia tablet, yeah. I've had their phones before.

Re: Wow got my N800 today!!!!!

Ok I got it going. Man you need some patience with this thing - have to wait 5 - 10 minutes if it doesn't power up sometimes, then it will. It's updating now. Sheesh!

jself 2009-06-02 03:00

Re: Wow got my N800 today!!!!!

*EDIT* It's fine now after a 2nd attempt.

So it gose through the update and says a write failed, check the USB cable and restart.

**** this. I am beyond dissapointed right now.

Re: Wow got my N800 today!!!!!

You say it was a demo unit? Maybe that is why everything is broken. Try a fresh battery, and flashing from Linux.

jself 2009-06-02 03:33

Re: Wow got my N800 today!!!!!

Everythings fine now. It was OS2007 I read, some sw/firmware issue.

Re: Wow got my N800 today!!!!!

A straight update to diablo from OS2007 never worked for me- I had to flash chinook and, from there, then flash diablo.

Ah,so YOU were the guy who bought that demo n800 I saw on Ebay last month.
I saw the words 'demo' I said nope. Demo usually means a in-store demo of the basics to get it to sell.
It may have a defect or anything.
But if you get it working more power to you bro!
Enjoy!

Re: Wow got my N800 today!!!!!

It's in great condition. If anything does happen, eh I just got a job so I would get an N810. I make about what I paid for the N800 in a few days so... no huge loss (but yeah it would suck)
