[Announce] Quicknote

1 Attachment(s)
For those of us shunning fancy note taking apps for the Palm like simplicity of something like QuickNote, I got permission to add some features and make some releases. So please blame me and not the author if something has broken recently :D

Features
  • Interface zooming
  • Word wrap
  • Persisting of the above settings.
  • Moved things around to try and be a bit more finger friendly

See

Re: Quicknote

I just promoted 0.7.8-7 to Diablo Extras and Fremantle Extras-testing

If you have an n900, please vote on it.

Re: Quicknote

Seems to work very well on Diablo. More finger friendly and the zoom works well.
One 'request': Would it be possible to have the date-stamp format pull from your tablet settings?
I'm getting European date-format and 24hr time.

Also: Maybe an icon update? :D

Fantastic little note taking application btw.

Yeah, I'd love to have an icon update, I'm just not an artist.

And feel free to file a bug report on the file-format issue.

How does one get Spell Checking to work? I installed 0.7.8-7.

I hope this means you're also willing to take credit. Thanks! Adding word-wrap was by itself sufficient to make an unusable app into a worthwhile one.

A couple suggestions ...

Highlighting searched-for character-strings in the results would be very helpful.

I'd eliminate "New Note" in the left pane since the Add button takes care of its function.

Re: Quicknote

Is there a way to create and assign a Category? Or is the category-selection tool at this point a throwback from the future, a tool for selecting an element of the program that hasn't been developed yet?

Spell checking is actually only for desktop Linux. Its not available for Maemo. I filed a bug to clarify documentation.

Please file enhancement requests on these. Yeah, I know, I filed something for someone else just above, but I try and avoid that.

Its annoying to get to work but if you edit the category name and then create a note it will keep that as a category. Feel free to file a bug on improving this.

Re: Quicknote

Help..

I'm using 0.7.8 and today when opening up quicknote all my notes are gone. I used the previous version quite a bit and even a few notes in the new version and never had a problem with the old version...now there are no notes.

I've had some re-boots but no re-flash.

Any way to get my notes back - and if there is anything in this new version that makes it unstable, is there any way to get the old version?

Re: Quicknote

Sorry, can't help you there Tintin. Would anyone here know whether it's possible to assign multiple categories to one note?

Was it immediately after upgrade or did you get some use out of it first? Could you post the log? You can do this with Ctrl+l (letter L) which copies the log and then you paste it into your web browser, note app, etc.

It'll be a couple of days before I look into this.

Currently you cannot but you can always file an enhancement

Re: Quicknote

@epage

Hi.
I added 2-3 notes after I installed the new version. Closed the app and re-opened it to make sure both old and new entries were there - and they were.

Yesterday I opened up Quicknote and all notes were gone.
I also noticed that my one custom category was gone.

(and yes, I've made sure there is nothing in the search field and that category is set to all when looking for my notes :) )

Note: I added one note named 'tuesday 1pm' after I noticed all notes being gone yesterday. It's still there.

Note II: Maybe it's possible that a new DB file got selected. I tried to go into Set DB but I can't seem to browse to even the DB file I'm using now. In what folder is the DB file(s) stored? (I assume /home/user/mydocs).

When using the 'Set DB' it's impossible to browse existing DB files.
What was the default called?
I got a sense that I got it all wiped when hitting 'sync'. Not sure though.

Thanks man.
I've been using it ever since and haven't had any lost notes since then.
It would be nice to either be able to retrieve the lost ones - or know the reason why it happened so if it was my doing I never do that again.

Thanks for a great application.

I definitely agree. I actually have a general lack of trust of databases (lack of transparency) and am tempted to move things to be file based which would help debug things in the future.

I've hoped that someday the contents of Quicknote would be easily exported for import into PC-based database programs. Does a "file-based" approach lend itself to that? (I've had no problems with my limited amount of data I have in Quicknote ... and no problems of years of using EccoPro and QuickDex personal information databases in Windows and pre-OSX Mac OSes.)

Is ability to export data something you've considered? I'd like to be able to import from comma-delimited or tab-delimited files, too.

You've used them but what about debugging them ;)

There is an enhancement request for import/export and its something I would personally like. The limiting factor is time.

I'm having a problem I've installed quicknote but when I open it on my n900 it automaticly closes after 2 or 3 secs...

I really like the progam. it was working before I uninstalled a few python files to install the optifyed version. I don't know if thats the problem but it's the last thing I've done to clear some space in rootfs.

I'm guessing its quitting fast enough that it isn't getting around to processing the log. I wonder if there is a dependency issue. Try running
Code:

/usr/lib/quicknote/quicknote_gtk.py
That will launch quicknote from the command line and give you all the gory details. I would be curious what the output is.

I take it you are running out of Extras? The good news is if its a bug in the app, the fix is already in the pipeline (I removed that code). The bad part is it is still lacking 5 votes from testers for promotion.

Sorry, what I mean is you have the "maemo.org" Application Catalog enabled and you got Quicknote through that. This has historically been called "Extras". As part of the QA process for making it into Extras, there are two other Application Catalogs software lands in, Extras-testing and Extras-devel, both of which are not recommended for most users. Sadly a fix for this won't come until my software finishes with the QA process. It is currently blocked by people not volunteering to test it.

Re: Quicknote

I have been using Quick note as apposed to n900 Tasks (which doesn't support notes or categories) mainly because it launches quickly. I prefer it over Conboy because it is more simple and launches fast.
I can't take advantage of the application because I can't sync my notes with Outlook. That said I would like some feedback on the following idea.

Using Nokia PC suite to sync with my n900 - I see task descriptions (or notes-in palm language) are synced with the n900. (this can be demonstrated by syncing a description and creating a conflicted and setting conflict resolution to favour the Mobile phone.)

Conclusion the Task Description exists on the n900 it just can't be read from teh phone UI.
I also see the n900 database doesn't support categories.

So my idea is: Can Quicknote be modified to read the default Note and Task databases on the n900 and display it as a category inside Quicknote? (this would allow me to edit and modify search and sync my existing notes and tasks with Outlook inside Quicknote - functions not yet available on the n900. )

Very interesting idea. Unfortunately I don't have any of the setup to get the device into the specified state to experiment with accessing Notes. I still think its worth filing an enhancement request in case someone later on can take this on or I later get a way to experiment with this.

Re: Quicknote

Maybe i have 0.7.10.2.

I think this is a beatiful app, but need an improvement on category management.
Moreover the developer could introduce the full screen mode as is in the RSS Reader.

Excuse me for my english

I already tried to report some maemo bugs, but without success :( So, please reply me! I have much need this apps.

where can I get the source code? I could use some practice and try to improve it a bit..

also when I open the program and type something and then click add, sometimes it erases the message written and creates a new one.

I just 'upgraded' from a Treo 650 running Palm OS to the Nokia N900 and this looks like it could be useful, but I need to be able to get my old notes in. Has there been any progress on text file import or export? I can live without proper synchronisation, I just want to be able to do it as a one-off.

Failing that, any hints on the the feasibility of grabbing the file (?) used internally to store the notes, so I can export it to my PC, hack some temporary program up to import my notes and copy the file back onto the N900?

Cheers.

Currently the data is stored in a database. I'm not a fan of databases so that might eventually change but it does limit doing a hack.

Could you provide me examples of what you want to be able to import and I'll look at an option? it may be a few days as right now I am on vacation till the end of the week with little time to recover before more vacation end of next week.

Wow, that was a quick response! :-)

I can munge the data as required if it makes things easier, but for what it's worth the raw data is what comes out of jpilot (a Linux program which syncs with the Palm OS builtin apps). The text export from that generates a text file like this:

Memos exported from J-Pilot 1.6.2.9 on 08/04/10 21:01

Memo: 1
Category: Unfiled
Private: No
----- Start of Memo -----
This is the text of memo 1
----- End of Memo -----

Memo: 2
Category: Unfiled
Private: No
----- Start of Memo -----
This is the text of memo 2.

Of course, it can have multiple lines.
----- End of Memo -----

In an ideal world I would be able to import such a text file. I don't really care about importing the category (jpilot seemed to lose it occasionally, so I stopped really using it) but obviously it would be nice. And I guess the private/not-private distinction doesn't exist in Quicknote, so that's irrelevant (though on a different note, it might be a nice extra feature).

Anyway, if you can help that would obviously be great, but please don't go out of your way. I should probably download the source and see if I can hack something in myself. (I just wanted to do that kind of thing *after* I got the basic functionality all working, so I didn't feel any self-imposed pressure.)

Cheers, and I hope you're enjoying your vacation. :-)

When I get around to my Quicknote rewrite (like I've done to my other apps) I'll improve the situation here but until then the file to grab is "~/quicknote.s3db"

Hi......this will help. Thanks but I have a small request: Is it possible to export all/some notes into csv or similar format ?? My fear is that I can't restore the data to anything other than quicknote. I'm not very good with databases....

I lost my phone recently....& luckily it was returned (phew)....but for 2 days I was without my quicknotes...so I'm now determined to export them somehow.

If you're working on an export function (email into evernote??!?) then I'll wait for that....otherwise I have to get them off somehow !?!?!

I love the ability of Quicknote to make offline notes so quickly....thus making the evernote client a non starter since my network coverage is so poor.

Hope you can help ??

Regards,
Sam

Sorry, I've not been putting too much focus on quicknote lately. My plan has been to prepare for Meego by learning Qt by porting applications of mine that push different areas of my knowledge of Qt. Quicknote ended up being on the bottom of the list. I have a strong distrust of databses so import/export was going to be on the top of my list of things to implement. I wanted to wait till then because it will be pretty much a complete rewrite.

I recommend voting on the following bug: https://bugs.maemo.org/show_bug.cgi?id=6479

Now that I'm wrapping up the latest stage of DialCentral work (hopefully I'll finish one more feature) I need to evaluate what I'll work on next.
