Maemo Summit & maemo.org merchandising
Proposal to the Maemo community: agree on the merchandising and marketing swag you want for maemo.org, make an estimation of the cost and, if reasonable, we will include it in the Summit budget.
Shirts, stickers, anything else? To be given in the event, and other distribution means to reach great contributors not able to attend? Design work or competition? Think that this would be the 2009 shot for merchandising. Let's discuss and agree on something. If we can have a rough rough estimate in 10 days all the better because we are defining the big boxes of the Summit budget. |
Re: Maemo Summit & maemo.org merchandising
I will definitely buy a sticker and a shirt (unless they cost as much as @ concerts ;))
|
Re: Maemo Summit & maemo.org merchandising
Can I go out on a limb and suggest that at least a t-shirt be given to 'outstanding contributors' even if they can't make it?
I know from the last summit that there were a lot of t-shirts 'waiting' for new homes, please spread the love (with a little postage and packaging) to the non-attendee's. I'm still waiting for my Danish Mozilla t-shirt with no real hope. Outside of that, t-shirts are the main swag, bags next (a good record-type bag would be ace), usb-key's are like socks, rarely are they happily received as a present but there's always a use for them. (goes without saying a hardware giveaway would be the best course of action). |
Re: Maemo Summit & maemo.org merchandising
there were recently fun little competitions for maemo mascots and of course your council uniforms.

I just want a "Fixed in Fremantle" T-shirt.

Re: Maemo Summit & maemo.org merchandising
Nice stylish t-shirts with the maemo.org logo on (perhaps less large than last year == more discrete == more likely to be worn in public ;-)).
Perhaps see if we can get them in a grey close the header above, with the white & orange logo on the breast? I don't think there's a need for a big design competition for them: there's enough to do without organising one. Stickers: fine, but my son's laptop is the only one which get adorned. Perhaps a USB adapter/cable for OTG host? Or if not, a shop selling them on site, along with other cool hard hacks. I think a t-shirt's the only essential item, but things somehow related to Maemo rather than the standard conference stuff would be good. I was at a rather larger conference last week and they gave out anti-bacterial alcohol hand gel (norovirus outbreak the year before). Do not recommend ;-) |

I also got a rather stylish & natty little fold-away 4-port hub. So, no - I can't refuse them: I just don't know what to do with them! :-/ A quick Google suggests that a 1,000 (too many, but this is the price) 1GB branded drives would come to nearly £5,000. I'd rather sponsor a couple more people, or have a large beer tab :-) EDIT: Or a live band (playing recognisable rock/pop tunes) at a party. For example, World Classic Rockers (better than I expected) at JavaOne. Probably more than £5k tho! |

I think some kind of branded carrying case for any/all of the devices would be nice.

Re: Maemo Summit & maemo.org merchandising
GeneralAntilles and I were speaking of shirts for Maemo Summit a few months ago and thought it might be another contest opportunity.
I really liked the black shirts from last year. I think dark is good with the new logo. Maybe we could have a contest to pick color(s) and Maemo 5 tagline...? (Thinking out loud here.) Tim |

http://usbpen.co.uk/images/products/...c2_200x150.jpg Comes in at about €2,000/£1,800. It's a plain style, but since it doesn't have much in the way of a bulky case, it's small and fits in even the most recessed USB slot. I've got a 1GB from work, and it's the best pen drive style I've seen. |
Re: Maemo Summit & maemo.org merchandising
Plain USB sticks are a bit boring nowadays, isn't it. What about something with a mobile focus like a MicroSD-USB adapter?
http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2145/...8c4f66.jpg?v=0 T-Shirts: plain maemo.org logo or something more Summit special? Or both? Contest or contacting a trusted community designer (or two)? Giving away vs selling, both? Please start focusing on proposing a budget so I can take it into account in the Summit budget. Note also that nothing comes for free: more money spent in merchandising means less money spent elsewhere, mainly sponsored participants (since most of the other expenses are rather fixed). |

It doesn't matter whether the items are to give away or for sale since Nokia won't get back any money. From our point of view is pure expense. If you plan to do send items to people elsewhere then you will need to take into account which items and how many and to which destinations, in order to make a rough estimation of costs. If you are familiar with budgets you know that the sooner you define your requests the better chances you have to get them accepted with little discussion. Later on other expenses come and the budget gets more and more limited for the late comers. Thank you for your understanding! |

Re: Maemo Summit & maemo.org merchandising
I would like to suggest the LaCie PassKey USB Micro SD Reader that you can really carry around:
http://www.lacie.com/imgstore/produc...ey_microSD.jpg Another suggestion is the device-ready windbreaker from SCOTTeVEST (just add the maemo.org logo): http://www.scottevest.com/media_new/...aphite_ndx.jpg Or a custom maemo.org themed Timbuk2 bag: http://content.screencast.com/users/...06-15_0850.png |
Re: Maemo Summit & maemo.org merchandising
Standard maemo.org T-Shirts to buy (but bigger sizes than in Berlin and less prone to shrink-after-wash)

Re: Maemo Summit & maemo.org merchandising
Oh I like the Timbuk2 bags Reggie suggested. Very nice.
I'm not a fan of plain USB sticks or any other kind of storage devices. They get obsolete pretty quickly, and then they're just junk in the drawer. I'm not so big on card reader / adapter things, either, unless they serve a big purpose for a current device I own. If you want a little plastic thingy to give away, I'm going to second the motion for some kind of USB host adapter. That's been one of the strengths of the devices so far, being able to be a USB host, but the host adapters are very hard to find. |

Merchandise needs to be as cheap as possible to allow larger quantities to be distributed hence raising brand awareness. You don't think this LugRadio Live t-shirt I'm wearing today was produced with quality in mind? It was made cheaply and in large quantities to allow people like me to become a walking advertisement and in return I get a very cool t-shirt. I'm not saying that the merchandise you get at these kind of events isn't useful or cool but cost vs impact has to be considered and if it means getting 50 expensive bags or 500 cheap t-shirts you can understand why the t-shirts are chosen. Also what happens when not everyone can get the cool <THING> that some other attendee got? |

A long shot but maybe we can still get more companies to sponsor some giveaways... Google, Skype, Gizmo, etc, or maybe Maemo device 3rd party accessory makers? |

1. Micro to Mini USB adapter $9.00 2. N800 Swivel USB OTG adapter $11.00 (volume Discounts available) 3. N800 USB OTG adapter $6.00 The N800 USB Host adapters are used in tandem with the Micro-to-Mini adapter for use on the N810. The other neat Nokia tablet accessories on jolouis' site include: 4. Screen Protectors $12.75 5. Headphone/Mic splitter $15.00 6. N800 USB OTG pigtail for DIY $8.00 7. Torx T5 screwdriver bit $8.00 8. USB Ethernet adapter $25.99 Hope this helps. EDIT - Disclosure - I have used jolouis' site to order 2 screen protectors in the past 6 months or so. Good experience. I am not affiliated with his company, in case anyone was wondering - I just had a good experience in dealing with them, and thought that his products were a good fit for the Maemo Summit. |
Re: Maemo Summit & maemo.org merchandising
When I used to have an online accessory store, I got a lot of my products from Brando. He will give really huge discounts on bulk orders.
He also sells a lot of microSD card readers, even some with built-in sim card readers ;). If you look at this page, check if you see something interesting and I can help talk to him for bulk discounts. He cuts screen protectors (both clear and anti-glare) in his shop, btw. He would also do special packaging if needed. He ships via FedEx anywhere. |

If Nokia were to propose a big order of micro USB host adapters (instead of needing two pieces, the mini host adapter and the micro to mini adapter), I wonder if jolouis could get them made? |
Re: Maemo Summit & maemo.org merchandising
There are now such for sale on e-bay from chinese sellers. Ones specifically marked as for N-810 and "no usbcontrol needed". For example:
