dropbear vs. openssh
 

I just bought a Nokia 770.

I used the App Manager to install xterm from a repository. Works great.

Now, I want to install ssh. Looks like there are two choices: openssh and dropbear. It seems that there may be some additional functionality in openssh, but dropbear is much smaller.

Are there any really significant issues regarding which to choose?

I think I'd like to use dropbear, because of the smaller footprint.

But, how to go about installing it?

First, the link for the 770-specific package (at maemo.org) seems to be broken. I think I found the general source at sourceforge, but which package? The Debian version, presumably. Is that correct? And what are folks using, stable, test, or unstable? Then, since there is no repository, how does one proceed-- use 'apt-get' from a 770 xterm screen?

Ill go with openssh since openssh will give you SCP Transfer as well.

To get openssh install in OS2006 go in xterm and gain root acces and run:
apt-get install ssh

For dropbear follow the link...

And download the Maemo Packege...

Thank you, SeRi@lDiE, but the Maemo Package appears to be unavailable. (That's why I was inquiring about which Debian package, etc., to use.)

I think (although I could be mistaken) that dropbear can also do scp.

When I had dropbear there was no command for scp in or out.
If you want dropbear PM and I will email it to you.

With openssh you can forward X applications from another box to your 770, which you can't with dropbear (no -X or -Y option). Have not tried the other way around. (perhaps will do it now :) ).

I just checked the dropbear website ( http://matt.ucc.asn.au/dropbear/dropbear.html ), and it appears that dropbear now does X11 forwarding.
(however, no Maemo package available.)

I prefer OpenSSH.
Just my opinion.

I'm delighted to learn from the much more experienced Nokia 770 community.

BanditRider, might you suggest any advantage you find in openssh?

I tried dropbear when I first upgraded to IT2006 and couldn't get it to work. It may have been updated since then.
I un-installed it and installed OpenSSH like I had on IT2005 and it worked like a charm.

Again, just my experience.

The download site came back to the land of the living, so I installed dropbear, and it works like a charm (from PuTTY on a W98SE :o machine).

I finally chose dropbear over openssh because it had functionality sufficient for me, and is very compact.

Can you SCP?

I just tried a quick test. Created a small file and used scp to copy it to localhost. Then did the reverse (created small file and used scp to copy from localhost). Both times scp succeeded. I know it did the scp thing because during the first trial ("outbound" copy) I got the usual scp untrusted message.

I did note that scp reported it didn't understand several switches. I don't know where those arguments came from, since I supplied no arguments (other than the source and target). I suppose they "built-in" somewhere along the way. In any case, the files successfully copied (both incoming and outgoing).

How does one do this? I tried but when I enter the IPof my 770 and click the open button putty just hangs....

Yep, I use dropbear's scp as the only way to transfer files to the N800 and it works flawless.

I originally installed dropbear because it was in the alternative "how do I become root" instructions, but often use it for shell access or with WinScp.

Aside from the X forwarding, I think that it also lacks the ability to act as a SOCKS proxy.

The reame mentions that public keys must be converted to dropbear format before use.
