Got N810, also got screwed
Well, I finally got my n810.
It DID come with three batteries. They were ALL chinese, though. no originals. Anyone got a spare they want to donate to a n00b? As well, it did not come with the AC adapter! The seller stated that it came with all accessories, I even specified that I didn't care so much about the extras (batteries, screen protector), as long as it had the usb cable and the AC ADAPTER. Does anyone happen ot have a spare AC-4 they can express ship? As well, I need a bit of help with flashing my tablet. I'm still a n00b and a search didn't show how. |
Re: Got N810, also got screwed
You'll need the adapter first as you don't want to do this unless the tablet is fully charged.

Re: Got N810, also got screwed
Any modern Nokia standard should do, FWIW.

Re: Got N810, also got screwed
If you do get a new charger: I'd highly recommend the AC-5X (U if American variant) over the 4X. Both mine and my brother's 4X broke in 4 months (I was on my second 4X at this point) but our 5X's are still going strong.

Re: Got N810, also got screwed
It arrived fully charged.
I hope that Walmart or Radioshack have the AC-4 charger, or someone can sell me one for cheap with fast shipping. All I have is three batteries and an external battery charger. Getting the flasher application now, though |

Though I will look for them on Amazon or Buy, unless someone wants to point me to a better place to look. |
Re: Got N810, also got screwed
After contacting the seller, it LOOKS like an honest mistake. He said he's going ot ship it when he got home from work.
It'll take a bit to see if it's really an honest mistake, but he gets points for maintaining contact and responding promptly. |
Re: Got N810, also got screwed
You're lucky then. When something like this happens, it's usually not a mistake and the sellers never reply back. Trust me, I've seen it all too much before.

Re: Got N810, also got screwed
Okay, trying ot flash the tablet is seriously starting to frustrate me. It doesn't stay it "flash mode" long enough for the program to pick it up, no matter how many times I try.

Re: Got N810, also got screwed
Other than "electronics" stores, check out places that sell accessories for cell phones. In other words, any place that sells cell phones or cell phone plans. You should be able to locate a Nokia charger there.

Re: Got N810, also got screwed
HAH! Finally got it to start the flashing process, About the hundredth time I tried. I switched over to a battery that had been fully charged on the external charger.

Re: Got N810, also got screwed
well, I'm typing this on my N810 in the default browser. I'm really liking iit more than I thought I would. I can stream all of my music from my computer while at home, which I am doing right now. I must have small thumbs or something, because I can comfortably type on the keyboard with all my typos being the wrong button, not hitting several. Until I can get around to installing Tear, the default browser is working perfectly for me.
I just changed over to the touch keyboard, and I much prefer the physical keyboard. there, back to physical. Now I'm going through the applications. Anything I should get on principle? I plan on getting notes, xournal, and a messenging client of some sort. |
Re: Got N810, also got screwed
Sure...
As for Tear, see my post here - if you're familiar with desktop Linux distros, it should be easy Other than that, here are a few suggestions: - (Media Players) Canola or Mediabox - try both, and figure out which you like. There are a few others, such as ukmp, but those are the Big Two. If you use Youtube a lot, download MyTube, as Youtube tends to stutter in the browser. (and Vimeo? Ha!) - Leafpad. The Notes app saves in html, and vi in the console doesn't suit everyone; a basic text editor is good. Try Geany if you want basic coding-type features - ATI85, if you need a full-featured, "normal" calculator (it's a TI graphing calc emulator), or Free42 if you want old-skool RPN goodness (or both) - BlueMaemo. It turns your N810 into a BT keyboard/mouse combo device - probably a good fit if you have an HTPC Also worth mentioning is GraphicsMagick - the UI is not pretty, but it gets the job done if you need lightweight picture manipulation tools (e.g. crop/resize/transform/etc.) Enjoy your N810, and stick around for a while :D |
Re: Got N810, also got screwed
I have been around for a bit, trying to get involved in the "community", though I've mostly been failing.
Well, I've got Tear, Canola, Xournal, Leafpad, and Mauku. And OMWeather. Which messaging client does everyone recommend? I know that none really do Yahoo Messenger anymore, but if they can do Windows live Messenger, I can deal because WLM messages Yahoo contacts. |
Re: Got N810, also got screwed
Whatever else you do, add Personal Menu and Quick Clip. And if you like something like Pandora for music, go with Vagalume instead (and register with last.fm so you can make use of it).

Re: Got N810, also got screwed
I have Canola, and for some reason it doesn't want to play any videos. They just stay black and show no length.
|
Re: Got N810, also got screwed
In regards to WLM... you won't find official clients for any proprietary IM networks on Linux (ha!), but you can install either the RTCOMM beta upgrade (built-in IM), or Pidgin Messenger, in order to get WLM and other networks working. If you're in the same situation as I (multiple networks using the same address), you may run into this bug - if so, be sure to let them know, as I can't really do anything to help them with it right now.

Re: Got N810, also got screwed
Luckily, I plan on only using it for WLM while I'm out, and transferring the three or so Yahoo contacts that NEED to remain in contact with me over to WLM.

Re: Got N810, also got screwed
Okay, new problem. I'm trying to solve it without video conversion, since the video files have subtitles hardcoded.
I attempt to play an RMVB file, which is supposed to be supported. On all three players I have (default, Canola, and Mplayer), all I get is audio, and only black for video (nothing for mplayer, it even crashes after a little bit) |
Re: Got N810, also got screwed
Is rmvb supposed to be supported?
|
Re: Got N810, also got screwed
According to the user manual, it's supposed to be. There is even the "R" symbol on the file.
