Fremantle Beta 2 SDK is out

Here (including links to the differences between beta and beta2). Highlights from the release notes:

Quote:

* Status menu area available. Plugins for the status area can be developed and tested. Note that the process hildon-status-menu needs to be started manually at the moment as it is not yet integrated into the init scripts in scratchbox environment.

* statusbar-alarm-dbus-api opensourced.

10. Known issues in SDK

The following issues have been noted during the testing of the SDK:

1. In armel target, the hildon UI does not come up while starting the hildon application framework. This is mainly due drawbacks in the user mode qemu.

2. Task switcher is not present. Hence you can run one application at a time from the UI. The final Maemo 5 will contain however the task switcher.

3. The SDK is not currently usable with only open components mainly due to come open to closed dependencies. This makes installation of Nokia closed binaries crucial for the complete functionality of the SDK.

4. On launching Application Manager, "Operation failed" banner appears and one cannot save any newly added catalogues. This can be solved by installing fakeroot-net package from the SDK repository which provides fakeroot command to the application. However, the catalogues fail to refresh completely. This problem is being investigated internally.

5.The performance of clutter can be improved by enabling hardware acceleration if not enabled already. In some cases, it would require installing restricted/proprietary drivers (Eg: on host machines with ATI or NVedia graphics card). Refer wiki for more details

6. Unnecessary warnings and debugging messages are printed out when the hildon application framework is started.
As can be seen the armel mode is still not working in Scratchbox... not very happy.

I thought we were all working on Harmattan now? Fremantle is so OLD :)

Honestly though, isn't it the idea to develop your app in X86, and make it work there, and then just dpkg-buildpackage it in the build target? Qemu-arm isn't perfectly but it's OK for building these days.

Why so many packages were removed?

No? :D

I'm building directly for arm and running on the tablet through SSH. A little slower and much more natural.

Plus I would not stand to build libwebkit for another target just for the sake of it.

Interesting - the FM transmitter translations have been removed:

http://repository.maemo.org/unstable...t_changes.html

The status-bar-usb translations have also been removed (from Nokia Binaries), but have been added in different form in the source packages.

The "mount" utility has been added. That should make qole happy and easy debian possible?

OMG!!!11eleven!

They have leaked a photo of the device among the SDK icons.
Check /usr/share/icons/hicolor/scalable/hildon/widget_device.png

:)

Here's the image.

Any screenshots of the status menu area?

It's nice that they added it, but I found that it doesn't really matter, since you don't have permissions to actually mount anything from within Scratchbox anyway.

But I'll try again and see... Maybe they've got some magic going on in the mount command to make it work...

I intend to make it my #1 priority to get Easy Debian (or more likely, Easy Mer) running on the new device, as soon as I can do it. But I'm guessing, at this point, that I'm going to have to wait until I can develop on-device. The SDK just isn't designed for this kind of thing.

By the way, sjgadsby, I thought you said that all of Finland was on vacation this month? What's this about? They seem to still have developers at their desks, at least... ;-)

Looks like a tablet to me, and in fact very much like the "mockup" shown on the slides at last year's summit.

Another interesting one for the phone-or-tablet guessing game is /usr/share/icons/hicolor/48x48/hildon/general_voicemail_avatar.png. At the same time
/usr/share/icons/hicolor/48x48/hildon/addressbook_sim_contacts_group.png which was present in the first beta is gone.

The image looks like a darkened n810.

If they weren't then, following the time honored tradition of darting out the door as soon as a release is dumped, they most certainly are now.

Here are a couple with example-status-applet installed and hildon-status-menu started. The second one shows the example applet's menu, and illustrates that status applets are still visible when not in the "home" screen.

I wonder why they're still enclosing dialogs in a "square" containers rather than just allowing the boxes to have rounded corners. Odd.

That's supposed to have real alpha transparency (as opposed to shaped windows). Just not quite done yet.

Thanks for the screenshots. Maybe I need to see a video, but I'm not quite clear how this works. Is the status area visible all the time, or does the user need to do something (e.g. a gesture or a drag) to view it?

Yes, it (the right rectangle on the first screenshot) is always present, and when you tap it you get the larger one with the applets' menus etc.
