Detailed instructions for Google Voice and Gizmo setup
I recently set up my N810 to work as a free wifi phone using Google Voice, Gizmo, and the most excellent DialCentral (thanks epage!). In the process, I did a lot of searching on this forum and elsewhere. I found a lot of really useful information here, for which I am grateful.
I found all the information I needed, but it was spread throughout multiple threads and pages, and it took me most of an afternoon to get it working. After all that effort, I felt that step-by-step instructions could be a real time-saver. To that end, I've written a blog post with detailed instructions for setting up Gizmo and Google Voice on the N810. You can find it here. I hope this will be helpful. Admins: I apologize if this is bad form. Feel free to slap my wrist and delete this post if it shouldn't be here. ;) |

Re: Detailed instructions for Google Voice and Gizmo setup
Nice! I got my invite last week and I finally get enjoy the VOIP flexability the people with grand central had. Perhaps this should be in the wiki?

Re: Detailed instructions for Google Voice and Gizmo setup
Hey, I got my Google Voice invite earlier this week and even though I see some of the 'benefits' with transcribed voicemails, etc I'm not sure how/if I will really end up using it.
I've been a Skype user for a long time. I use Skype more than any other phone service these days. What, if any, benefits are there to switch to Gizmo (and is there any integration points to Google Voice that Gizmo has that Skype doesn't?)? Thanks! |
Re: Detailed instructions for Google Voice and Gizmo setup
So THATS why DialCentral was not working. I did not choose a CallBack number. Wow, I am dumb! Thanks for making me look into this!
Advantage of Gizmo over Skype is that you can use the built in IM client, which is always running and very light. And calls are free with DialCentral. |
Re: Detailed instructions for Google Voice and Gizmo setup
If you use the stock maemo Internet call client, how do you get to the dialpad to press "1" and answer a call?

Second, using the built in client is very light weight and always running in the background. The skype app doesn't want to log in automatically when changing wifi spots. with the client it logs in as soon as the NIT is connected. And now you can still call skype users with gizmo for free(just keep it under a 5 minute call) using opensky. I was a heavy skype user for calling phones while traveling. But for longer phone calls skype tended to start getting choppy. I haven't noticed that yet with SIP using Gizmo. |

Click “Connect.” Google Voice will call the phone number. When you answer, you will be asked to enter the code displayed on the website. This part is a little tricky with the N810. As soon as you answer the call, tap the “Internet Call” program menu. Under “Internet Call,” select “DTMF dialing.” A numeric keypad will appear on which you can enter your activation code. After you have entered the code, you will be told, “your forwarding phone is set up. Goodbye.” use the same pad for dialing "1". |

Thank you hornartist!
I just got my invite yesterday and was like, WTF, what now? :D |
Re: Detailed instructions for Google Voice and Gizmo setup
If you're not going to use your invite, you could sell it on eBay. I watched two auctions close between $20 and $30 USD last week. I wish I had a few extra invites to sell. :)

Re: Detailed instructions for Google Voice and Gizmo setup
So now that I've got this all working, has anyone integrated this nicely with their contacts? I have a vast collection of vCards, including photos and all, and I'd like to use it. I can use the contacts program to place an internet call, but that dials out directly from gizmo, not google voice. And incoming calls via google voice appear as 'sip:1235551212@...', so the internet call program doesn't make the connection and tell me who is calling.
For outgoing calls, it seems like dialcentral only supports CSV files or google contacts. It would be nice if dialcentral could at least integrate with contactinfos. Better still if I could just place the call, via GV, directly from contacts. Google, likewise, is seriously lacking in this area and will only import from CSV. It's stunning to me that a company that can do so much and is so interested in business customers, yet they won't implement something as simple as vCards. |

I just spent an afternoon adding my most used contacts into GV one at a time. Time consuming... I did transfer all my contacts from my gmail account which was quick, but didn't have their phone numbers listed in those contacts. |

Re: Detailed instructions for Google Voice and Gizmo setup
This is great info for people as when I was setting it up I couldn't find much documentation (useful that is).
Anyway I was wondering if anyone had a list of tips and tricks related to Google Voice (and/or Gizmo) such as the dial 2 when you dial your GV # and enter voicemail (by entering * then pin) to call out from any phone. And dial * to switch between phones. There are quite a few uses for GV and I was wondering if anyone has thought them out. So far the only unofficial thing I've used it for is prank calling dating hotlines (with +Gizmo). I saw something related to piping through an Asterisk server but that information seems outdated. I was also wondering if anyone else has had trouble calling their GV voicemail from dialcentral. Also is there some secret way of entering the asterisk and pound keys from dialcentral? |

I have an ... odd use case which is why I've never gotten around to integrating with the contacts app. I have a contact list source that does not support sync. So occasionally I blap my list from that source in Dialcentral and GPE Contacts and then reimport in both. It is something I'll make note of and hopefully sometime figure out how to do it. |
Re: Detailed instructions for Google Voice and Gizmo setup

Re: Detailed instructions for Google Voice and Gizmo setup
Reggie take a screen shot of your settings. Block your login info but post your settings. I used the sip phone option for accounts. for the login I use the sip number, 1747........ and password. If you use the sip phone settings it will configure everything correctly for you, including the stun server. The more info you can provide the better :)

Re: Detailed instructions for Google Voice and Gizmo setup
I've got a weird situation that I haven't been able to resolve.
I have done the setup as described on the first post. Everything works great, and I can get connected to the Gizmo account just fine. From home, from work, and anytime I have wireless connectivity. Except at my Condo. There, I never get the solid green OK icon. Comcast Cable is the ISP. They claim to not block any ports, but... From the condo, I check port 5060 at proxy01.sipphone.com and it shows open. Any ideas what else I should check? Using the Gizmo client works on the NIT there, which is kinda weird. Jim |
