Tablet owners: What is your primary operating system?

You know, I got to wondering, with this device being Linux based, I was wondering what peoples' other exposure to Linux was. I have seen a number of threads in my time here with folks not understanding the Linux side of the tablet. So I thought I would post a poll to see where the average usership was in relation to the Linux in general.

Personally, I am a Linux geek. I have between 14 and 20 Linux boxes at home (both bare metal and virtual), and I am a Unix/Linux sysadmin by trade. In the new job I just started, I have a Windows box at work, up until this job, I have been run Linux on the desktop since 1998. I'd like to hear others stories.

Thanks,

Where is the poll?

I am a Windows person for the Games. I wish it had a command line though, that's the only part I like about Linux (aside from Compiz-Fusion).

mainly a windows user but, Linux newbie. I have been dual booting linux for some years but always end up using windows more cause I tend to get impatient when I can't get the programs to work.

At home 100% Linux. Kubuntu on the desktop computers, fileserver on Debian, general purpose server on Slack.

At work 100% Windows (not, that I'd have a choice...)

In the past two years I've went from..

Mainly a Windows user to Equally comfortable in Linux or Windows to Primarily a Linux user. I'm still comfortable in Windows, but I prefer using Linux (Ubuntu) over Windows.

What type of games? I'be been pretty impressed with the games coming to Linux. Its not there yet, but we have made some definite progress in the past few years...

I personally like simulators, preferably 3d ones, and between the ones coming to Linux natively (like Danger from the Deep, Beyond the Red Line, etc) and ones that run under WINE or Crossover, we aren't in bad shape.

Wine is really good lately, especially if one enables UseGLSL. Since my linux is on a SSD lately, games run better than on windows (which is not SSD blessed :)

Weak poll. My usage isn't covered even remotely.

I have been a windows user for years. People have tried to get me to go with Mac but I have always not liked the lack of freedom with Mac. I really don't like how they approach everything (good quality, but no freedom). I got my NIT over a year ago and it introduced me to Linux. It interested me a lot. So I put Ubuntu and my laptop and completely love it. Now I have Ubuntu on 2 of my 3 computers and hardly ever use windows. I have always looked for a good alternative to windows but didn't like the Mac option.

almost the same here,

100% winxp at work
100% ubuntu 9.04 on home desktop
50/50 xp/UbuntuNetbookRemix on the netbook so I can run the car diagnostic/ecu reflash software

I use linux only at home, linux only at work, and don't let anyone do anything with my computers (in particular, the support guys at work).

More: I bought a N800 because it's linux (I would have bought a smartphone otherwise). I wanted all my scripts and programs to work on the tablet, want to use mutt, vi, ssh, rsync, etc.

Always some kind of Linux OS. More than 30 yrs of OSs and any Linux is great. I like to be intimate with my machines. Thank you for asking.

Same here ;-) Running Linux[1] mostly[2] everywhere[3], ever since a fateful day in 1993 when I went through a ~50 floppy SLS[4] installation and never looked back.

[1] No particular relig^Wdistro, currently a mix of Fedora/Centos/Debian/Ubuntu boxen[5] and various "embedded" variants.
[2] Modulo a few OpenBSD firewalls here and there.
[3] Even in places I'd never expect to find it. You know "world domination, fast" has happened when you receive a GPL notice with your TV.
[4] 386BSD also sounded good at the time but it just wouldn't fit in my box.
[5] Is it a bad sign when you're running out of IP addresses on a /27? And if that's just your home LAN?

Programming Fortran in Mass. in 1970. Worked with Unix on Dummy Terminals from about 1976 appox.. Then consulting for financial institutions then on to PCs with 300 baud modem to Unix Mainframes... and you can guess the rest.

Re: Tablet owners: What is your primary operating system?

I'm pretty comfortable in both Windows and Linux, but I use Windows primarily for gaming. Apparently, my GFX card (ATI Radeon X1300 Pro) is now "legacy", and as such, is unsupported by the new drivers in Ubuntu.

I had a brilliant install of 9.04, then I installed Wine, then Steam onto that, then started HL2: DM and got about 3 FPS.

I could only say FFFFFFFFFFFFFUUUUUUUUU--- at that point.
I tried all sorts of stuff to try and make it work, but nope, and I had to reconfigure xserver because I failed that hard.

Re: Tablet owners: What is your primary operating system?

Windows. I'm decent in either one but WZC actually works compared to that POS NetworkManager and Firefox isn't dependent on WZC; like Firefox is to NM.

Only reason I installed Ubuntu was for Scratchbox, so VMware works for me.

ATI is a major FAIL on linux...

@qwerty12: NM can be switched off, at least in openSUSE.

Yep, guess I'm not alone in sharing that sentiment...

Then again, their software for Windows sucks. ATI Tray Tools user here.

I switched it off (and set up interfaces, wpasupplicant.conf etc manually), but Firefox believed my connection was non-existent and set itself to "Work Offline" by default, on each startup. It was a pain in the *** turning it off. (I think there's workarounds/fixes now, but they didn't exist when I was using Linux.)

Or maybe it's Ubuntu turning more and more into a shitpile. I had to upgrade from an older Ubuntu install that had an old NetworkManager and pin networkmanager in /etc/apt/preferences. Too much of a hassle if I needed to reinstall. Plus, I couldn't mount jffs2 files like I could with previous versions (I had to boot from a 7.04 live CD and tar it up from there...)

Probably. Since I'm using Iceweasel finely and I don't even have the NM daemon installed. I also don't have Pulseaudio, etc.

It bothers me that Ubuntu tries to follow Windows so closely that it already has started to limit the set of options up to the point that it, like Windows, does not work for me (e.g. use of pulseaudio for _EVERYTHING_ when I have nice hardware mixing, forced usage of NM when It's been 10 years since I last switched network configurations, etc. One older version even overwrote what it believed to be the MBR without asking me first, getting it wrong --like Windows; they all get it wrong on this machine, dunno why-- then proceeding to leave my system in unbootable state).

I am a Debian user currently, with a Windows VM I seldom boot anymore to use some USB hardware, and a Windows partition I only use for gaming (and I will probably end up being a Crossover customer).

Re: Tablet owners: What is your primary operating system?

Mac OS X 10.5.7 75%
iPhone OS 3.1b1 20%
Maemo 4.1.2 4%
Kubuntu 8.10 1%
Windows XP SP3 and Windows 2000 during the Blue Moon

And 3 versions of OpenWRT holding everything together.

And I concur, ATI with Linux has always been the suck for me, but the Nvidia proprietary Linux drivers work great on my boxes.

Same here, actually. I bought the N810 *because* it is Linux. My last was a Sharp Zaurus SL-5500...And I see a lot of the OpenZaurus refugees around here (like Lardman, and I believe I remember seening that IronGeek graduated from the Z to the Nokia as well).

But there is something very cool about being at a mandatory CEO pep-talk in the office and on your N8x0, logged in to a box overseas over wireless through OpenVPN working on a script that has to run in an hour...

I prefer Debian's package management. Used to use Ubuntu until Gutsy came out and encryption in the installer was broken, at that point , I went back to Debian on all my home servers. That said, I also used to do CentOS/RHEL and even SuSE at work.

ATI is a major fail in general. That stunt they did a few months back where the new driver EOL'ed a bunch of cards without warning, some of them less than 6-12 months old, is unacceptable. None of my boxes f I have a choice, I will never

Unless I'm mistaken, if you change your networking config files for the interface or set things by hand, it automatically disables NM. Plus you can disable its startup in /etc/rc?.d

lma probably meant a bog standard TV set. Just yesterday I downloaded the manual of an lcd tv (not planning to buy one, just looking around) and it came with a GPL notice and a link to the corresponding gpl sources:

I love Linux, but I've been using Windows for longer, so I'm probably more comfortable with Windows.
I have to work on Windows at work, but I have cygwin, most of gnutils and Portable Ubuntu installed on my work machine so I can get my Linux fix at work.

Linux at home (not only for personal things but also for extra work I am paid for).

WinXP at work. But it felt comfortably only after Cygwin installation and today I am doing most of the work from command-line.

Similarly to other readers I bought n800 because it run Linux. Never turned out to be some uber-hacker machine but I quite often fall back to command-line, Vim, etc. BTW, is Vim ready for Fremantle?

I don't see it in extras-devel yet (no point, since the SDK comes with its own vim) but that should be one of the easiest "ports" when the time comes.

Re: Tablet owners: What is your primary operating system?

Laptop:
(Quadboot)
- Ubuntu 8.10
- XP Pro
- Vista Home Premium 90% usage
- Win 7 Beta
(Virtualized)
- XP
- Backtrack 3
- OSX 10.5.4
- OSX 10.5.5
- Linux Mint 7
- Mer
- PCLinuxOS
- Ubuntu
- XP Pro

Desktop:
(Dual boot)
- Vista Ultimate 90% usage
- OSX 10.5.7

I tried to go the Linux route, but since I couldn't get my wireless card to work and Compiz is now supported under VirtualBox, I'm sticking with my (optimized) Vista install. Since I have plenty of RAM and decent processors, it works fine for both my laptop and desktop.
