Get an entire PC in internet on my N810?
Do you know G.ho.st? It's an entire OS inside your browser. I'd like to have something similar on my N810. But it should better use VNC instead of the browser's heavy Flash plugin. Is there a place in the where I can get my own virtual desktop? The PC should be in a data center instead of my machine at home.
Any ideas? |

Hmm you could simply use the vncviewer software? Provided that a vnc server is set up on the otheer comp...

vnc over the internet? That is usable, just but it's not exactly a nice experience.

VNC over the internet is not nice? That's sad. I thought it was possible now. My DSL connection is 16/1 Mbps. I thought this was enough to have my own virtual PC in a datacenter and access it via VNC from my N810. Too sad. :(

It's not the bandwidth that is just the problem, it's the latency.... |

To the original question: does g.ho.st work on the 810? Can anyone with an 810 give it a try?

(For that matter it didn't load in my Firefox on my PC, but maybe I have some setting fouling it; it did load in Google Chrome, and works quite well, at least word processing and file management, which was all I tried. |

It uses Flash 10 so it won't work with the NIT. I had never even heard of this, but the first thing I had to do when I signed up was to see how many os's I could run in my browser.
http://img169.imageshack.us/img169/8...oswithinos.jpg I got to an os within an os within an os. I tried to open another os but then ie crashed: http://img140.imageshack.us/img140/1297/erroruzc.jpg Yes I have too much time on my hands. |
Re: Get an entire PC in internet on my N810?
If your PC is running Linux, I'd recommend using NX, from NoMachine, instead of VNC (if possible). The Maemo NX client is still rather buggy, but hopefully someone will attend to it soon. The main advantages over VNC are lower bandwidth requirements, and built-in SSH tunneling, which is pretty darn important.

Re: Get an entire PC in internet on my N810?
And if you're running a Windows or Mac computer, I recommend NTR Connect. (That is, I recommend it to control one computer by another; it's not NIT-compatible.)

Re: Get an entire PC in internet on my N810?
VNC over the Internet is fine. You can even use the Java client to run it in a (desktop) browser. I use VNC over the Internet (through an encrypted SSH tunnel) to remote control my home PCs (both Windows and Linux) all the time. The tablet does VNC just fine (and the encrypted SSH tunnel, too! Thanks, tsocks!) but the desktop's screen is usually a lot bigger and so I end up having to scroll around the screen a lot...

I'm going to love seeing remote desktop software that actually works flawlessly on this device.
Unfortunately I can't seem to connect to my rack from the N810. Still, my network is a little weird and it's probably better this way. |
Re: Get an entire PC in internet on my N810?
I had seen a service like Ghost before but I can't remember what it was called. A quick search gave me this list of similar services though.

Using NX or VNC on the N810 with Linode.com (or prgmr.com or slicehost or even Amazon EC + Ubuntu) might be doable. I could test that when I get time because I have a Linode.com account. But the fact of the matter is, I really prefer to just use my N810 as it is. EDIT: sorry, I cannot test the NX or VNC scenarios because I do not have a GUI on my Linode.com server. |
