An N800 Die-Hard
I finally realized that I am totally content with my N800. I bought my first N800 in September of 2007. After 18 months the internal battery charger when out and then later the display started to become jerky. At this point, I could have bought any device on the market to replace it. Well, guess what? Rather than upgrading to an N810, I bought a new N800. I love the 16gb internal memory card. I love the camera that swivels. I love the external bluetooth gps that I use with it. I love the touch screen keyboard. I love how I cannot stand out in the hot sun while using it (although the screen is bright enough in the shade). Hopefully my new N800 will last me a couple of years and I can eventually install Mer and buy a couple of 64gb SD cards. My biggest wish is that someday, I will be able to run Skype in "Video" mode!:)

Re: An N800 Die-Hard
Hear, Hear.
I also love my N800 to bits. for me it's almost perfect, and I carry it just about everywhere, although the preciousness of it stops me. I would be absolutely over the moon if Nokia re-engineered the N800 for Fremantle with proper video capabilities and more horsepower. Oh and a built in GPS. I have a bluetooth keyboard for the times I need to do serious keyboard work, and can tether my phone when I need to, so only need a single contract. I have 2 16GB cards in mine, and it does just about anything I want. Although there are somethings I'd like I'll not turn this into a whiney want thread! Struggling to imagine at the minute a compelling reason to spend several hundreds upgrading when the new tablet comes out, although I'm sure the lust will kick in when it finally breaks cover, although a faster N810 with onboard 3G does not excite me. Glad to see I am not the only one! |

from one N800 user to another, cheers!

...and one-third of a cheer from one 770, N800 and N810 user :-)

Nice to hear from England, I spent a couple weeks on "holiday' in Fleetwood near Blackpool. I was a contestant in the International Ballroom Dancing competition. |
Re: An N800 Die-Hard
My N800 was invaluable on our recent trip to Greece. I carried it in my cargo shorts pocket the entire time while travelling. My wife commented that she was the 3rd wheel on the trip. I saw people at outdoor tavernas pulling out a laptop, or at best, a netbook to make a VoIP call via their free wifi. With my BT headset, my wife was talking to the kids back home while the trusty N800 was concealed in my pocket. Pure gold!

Re: An N800 Die-Hard
Last year I drove across Canada and lost my Verizon cell phone coverage in several towns. I had free WiFi in all the motels so I used my N800 with Skype to phone friends and family.

Re: An N800 Die-Hard
Dan I have to ask, where did you still get a new in box n800? I have had mine for slightly over a year and love it, however I ran into a problem where my screen is doing a vertical scroll (like an old CRT TV with a bad vert hold)
My credit card company doubles the nokia 1 year warranty so I'm trying to find a NIB N800 for when they refund my card I'm ready to order. I've seen a few shops on Amazon.com that say they have 1 remaining in stock but they're all companies I've never heard of and I'm nervous about ordering from a noname If you have a company you ordered from that has some in stock I'd love to hear about your experience with them. |

Do you by chance have his e-mail address that you would be willing to either PM me, or if you don't feel comfortable doing that sending him a mail on my behalf asking if he is able to get more still sealed? I can't make the purchase now but as soon as the credit card paperwork goes through I'm going to be in the market again.

@ Den: My N800 has seen a lot more use lately thanks to the progress being made by the developers in this community. Video on Skype would be really cool. Whoever gets this working will definitely be my hero.
@ Texrat: I have also bookmarked your blog. Your "Why I love Nokia’s internet tablets" struck a number of chords. Even down to the comment about the C=64 community. Ditto on your recent post about the current state of many HR departments. GRRRR!!! |

Re: An N800 Die-Hard
Its funny. When I bought my N800, I was excited. Then it feel out of favor. Then I restarted my use of it on a smaller scale, and it was there I started seeing the benefits of the platform. It was also such of a device to allow me to experiment a bit more.
Right now, my N800 is taking a break. I've recently purchased an N97 and that will be taking many of the lessons learned with the N800 (and my N95) and moving forward from there. I fully expect to get a new tablet, and grow from that use even more. For that, I think that the N800 is a great example of the possibilities. Sure, its not cleanly done (UX needs work still), but the lessons that can be taken forward seem legendary. |
Re: An N800 Die-Hard
had mine since December '07, and as battered it is, the problems that occur, i love 'it' ! haven't fell for the hyperphone, and this gadget is alot more intuitive.

Oh well. Skype with no video on my N800 is still pretty cool. :D And pretty solid, too. |

Re: An N800 Die-Hard
As some may see I did the same as the OP and replaced a failed N800 with another N800. I looked at what I use the device for and there was NOTHING on the market that has all the features I was looking for, in a form factor I was comfortable with as well as the N800. While a Keyboard would be nice what is lost by going to the N810 (second card slot, switching to micro-sd, no swivel camera) wasn't made up for, especially since I already own a bluetooth foldable keyboard that can ride in a shirt pocket for when I need to do serious typing.

Re: An N800 Die-Hard
Though I adore my N800 I did get an N900. Now the N800 is my alarm clock--a Chumby if you will. I move it around the house with me as I get ready for work (radio, podcasts). Even in the room while showering. And I am looking into ways to use it as a secuirty camera (to replace my old iBook that takes photos when motion is detected and emails them to my phone).
It has served me well. |
Re: An N800 Die-Hard
I own both a n800 and a 770, I still carry my 770 with me most of the time, much more than my n800. Even though it cannot run all the softwares out there for ITs, but the hard case and the lighter weight compare to n800 does won my heart. And a lot of time when I pull out my 770 and show it to my friends, I still can impress them with all the functions, eg remote controll my home computer, play snes games, watch cable TV over the internet, listen to the internet radio from oversea, make phone call to the USA when I am oversea, keep my eye on the stock market all day long, etc etc.........a lot more to show off.

So maybe it could be possible to get Skype video calls also to our N800. |
Re: An N800 Die-Hard
It's good to see an N800 thread. Skype is no longer an eBay company, as I understand it. Someone mentioned wanting a GPS with the N800. The external GPS has the advantage that you can move it somewhere to get the best signal (such as near a window) butt still keep the N800 with you.

Re: An N800 Die-Hard
All those skype users may want to keep Gizmo in mind. I use Gizmo to call the states when i'm in Mexico. There is also video calling (albeit not very good) with Gizmo using the N800. I used it a time or 2 and it can be hit or miss at times.

Re: An N800 Die-Hard
gizmo is part of google now, iirc...

Re: An N800 Die-Hard
Tear plus Advoid is terrific for browsing the web.
Kchmviewer is awesome, awesome, awesome since I'm no longer lugging around books like I used to. Garnet VM I use almost daily with the huge database of apps I have for it. Xkbd finally works with no repeating keys like it used to. This opens up so many more opportunities of being able to use programs that weren't possible before. Xbindkeys is easy enough to map new functions for the few hardware keys on the tablet including launching apps with a single press of a button or enabling a right mouse click. Watching videos does somewhat blow. The best results I've found are watching cartoons like the Simpsons. Many choices for playing audio files. I don't have all that much music but I've got a huge folder of Kaplan lectures I listen to. Pidgin rocks especially with qwerty's LED notification. Dial Central probably saves me around $300 yearly for making phone calls and sending and receiving SMS messages. For stress relief, I usually enjoy Dosbox (currently playing Castle of Dr. Brain on expert level) and I still enjoy old school Telnet games with ADOM being my favorite. Of course there's always SCUMM as well. Shin Megami Tensei 1 and 2, Wonder Project J, Front Mission and Wizardry Trilogy works really great on the little handheld. Kirby's Dream Course works okay. SCID lets me watch international matches live between two Grandmasters with an analysis engine running in real time which is quite entertaining for me. I feel like I'm still leaving out about a couple of dozen more things that I haven't mentioned. :) |

I think that maemo being an open source project should try to get Empathy going, as of now it provides "voice and video call using SIP, XMPP, Google Talk and MSN". |
Re: An N800 Die-Hard
I bought the N900 but I still have my N800. It comes in handy when travelling or at times when I have guests staying over. I hand them the N800 instead of a laptop if they need to check their mail or facebook or whatever.

Re: An N800 Die-Hard
you can use a 16 gig in the internal memory. Not 2 8's????

Re: An N800 Die-Hard
yep, the N800 supports SDHC, so i suspect it can even go 32GB pr slot if the user feels like trying.
basically, the max size given in a manual i usually the max size that the company had at hand to test with at the time of design, not the absolute max that the slot can handle (tho it will get slower as the card gets larger, as the bus will be optimized against the smaller card that they tested). |
Re: An N800 Die-Hard
Indeed, 32GB cards work fine. If someone would produce larger capacity SDHC cards they would work too.
|
Re: An N800 Die-Hard
hmm, now i find myself wondering, do maemo support udf as a file system?
|
Re: An N800 Die-Hard
Same here... I also feel that the N800 was a great device in it's class.
(I also got the 770 and the N810, and prefer the N800 any day...). Mine still works fine, and I still use it almost every other day: checking mail, weather, a quick web page... but the thing I use the most is the FM radio. I really like this feature. Too bad the interface is so "tiny"... Nokia should keep producing and selling the N800 at a reduced price... If it was under 120eur, I bet it would sell... |
Re: An N800 Die-Hard
tho i would not mind a N810 with a cortex cpu and two full size SDHC slots ;)
crap, where did that pandora go... |
Re: An N800 Die-Hard
Just to share. I was at a poetry event over the US King day holiday and decided to use the livecast app to livestream the last couple of performers. People kept asking me "what is that??" They were blown away that I could do that. Only problem was that the swivel camera gave an upside down image so I had to face the camera at the performers.
|
Re: An N800 Die-Hard
Some N800 devices apparently has an upside-down camera problem (i.e. the internal swivel position detector doesn't work or isn't detected in software). My N800 works fine though.
