Open invitation to co-create at Maemo Summit 2009
 

Hello everybody,

my name is Marieke Streefkerk and I work for Fronteer Strategy, a strategy and innovation consultancy in Amsterdam. We (Fronteer Strategy) are currently doing a co-creation project with Nokia that is linked to the Maemo Summit 2009 in Amsterdam. During this co-creation project we will bring together outside experts and lead-users and people from Nokia to collaboratively think about future concepts for Maemo Devices. For this, and that is the most exciting part, we would like to involve the Maemo community. I thereby mean sharing ideas with you, developing concepts with you, having discussions, involving you in the process, getting feedback, etc.

On the 8th of October there will be a one-day co-creation workshop in Amsterdam (at the same location as the Maemo Summit), which Fronteer Strategy will facilitate. This is an 'expert' or 'lead-user' co-creation workshop. During this day we will invite 8-10 outside experts, both Maemo and non-Maemo community members, who will work together with the Nokia team on developing new concepts and assess the potential of an existing Nokia concept. The fact that we will work with a select group of people on this day doesn't mean that you cannot be part of it.

The center-point of the co-creation project is this one-day co-creation workshop, but we will involve the Maemo Community before and after this day. Nokia wants to open up the results to a wide audience, therefore the results of the co-creation workshop will be shared during the Maemo Summit as well as online, allowing all Maemo Community members to participate and share their thoughts. This part of the schedule is also already placed on the Schedule for Day 2 (Maemo Co-Creation) by Jussi Mäkinen.
We will also try to involve you as much as possible before the Maemo Summit.

So to summarize, you can be part of this project, in many ways:

• you can participate online, also if you're not joining the Summit in Amsterdam
• you can participate in the co-creation workshop
• you can participate during the Maemo Summit
• you can recommend people whom you think are suit to participate in the workshop or the discussions online

So far my introduction. In the following weeks, I'd like to get to know you better and hope to hear if this projects sounds like something you are interested in.
I will also post more information about the project and be glad to answer any questions you have or hear any suggestions that you have.

For the co-creation workshop, I'd like to recommend someone who spans across many Maemo community projects with his UI & design work, Andrew Zhilin (wazd).

He has shown fantastic insight in user interface design and usage of mobile devices in discussions on interaction in Mer and in Maemo and would be a great addition to any discussions on future concepts.

I have to second this - and add that not only is Andrew a talented graphic and UI designer, he really works well with developers to ensure his ideas are implementable.

Wow! I am not that well versed in how other OEM's deal with concept development and evaluation. But, IMHO, this seems like an amazing step forward for our community, and possibly a first! Thanks Fronteer and Nokia!

I wonder why the Maemo Co-creation Showcase session is scheduled so late at 17:30 - 17:55? I hope it gets bumped up in the morning and/or not overlap with any other sessions. Everyone would like to hear the out come of the co-creation anyway, right?

The organizer (Jussi) asked for this slot and the other two on Sunday morning, and as you can see by the sessions description, the intended audience are only users.

hiya Marieke,

I'm looking forward to these sessions more than any other so far.
last year at the summit I was asked where I think maemo will be like in 5 years time and how our computing lives will be. (i wonder where my video ended up?)

I am still amazed that I am able to keep my entire digital memory in the palm of my hand. all my sketches and all my code all together and able to take with me anywhere :)

I hope to be able to be present at the Summit, so I'll explain ideas I've about the device.

The strange thing is this: next devices are a work in progress. Not ready yet, but almost defined... so what can we be useful for?

How can we know what to propose if we don't know how will be the next device?

Strange situation, anyway I wanna give my contribute anyway :)

Hi everybody,

Thank you for all the quick and positive reactions so far, I'm really pleased that you are all so eager to participate and help!

As I said in my first post, more information or discussion topics will be provided in the next weeks, but to answer some of the questions stated above:

The complete co-creation project will focus on a specific topic, so that will narrow down the scope in which you can provide input and ideas for future Maemo concepts.

For the people who cannot attend the Summit, we will make sure that you can offer input online. All input will be used in the sessions during the Maemo Summit. Of course all the outcomes of the sessions will also be shared online with you.

If you only want a handful of names, then the question shouldn't be, "Do you want to be involved in this?" but "Who doesn't want to be involved in this?"

You might get a few people who don't want to help provide ideas for future Maemo concepts...

With the people who want to participate online (which will be the largest group I suppose), we want to start a dialogue around the topic, share ideas and create new ones. You can think along, provide feedback and play a part in the development process. The outcomes of these dialogues will also be used as input for the Summit workshop, so people who will attend the Summit can take those ideas a step further and this will afterwards be shared with the online community.
We have a meeting about this project with Nokia at the end of this week, so I hope to be more specific then!

Really sounds like a great idea, and something that I'd defintely like to take part in. Heck, I'd make it a point to get my butt to wherever just to throw some ideas around and play with screens, simplicity, and mobile UI/X next.

The folks over at the Symbian Foundation have the ideas.symbian.org site; maybe something like that, from an organizational standpoint might help this effort... though I do hesitate in saying that there should be yet another website that has yet another login for yet another suite of conversations.

Hello Marieke and all.

I would like to volunteer for the co-creation workshop on Thursday, October 8th, at the Maemo Summit 2009.

My interest in maemo is focussed on usability, the needs of mass consumers and power users, even altough I also have a personal interest in "casual software development" (related to the poweruser-needs).

My skills and experiences:

• MSc, 20 years experience in software development (+/- professionally since 13 years, last 5 years as swdev manager for a large multinational IT company)
• Over 10 years experience with various devices and OS in the mobile segment (Palm 8 years, Windows CE/.net on and off again, Symbian 1.5 years, maemo 2.5 years, JavaME on and off, a bit of iPhone), both as a user and (partially) as a casual developer [PocketC, Compact Framework, JavaME, Python on Maemo, read into iPhone Dev/SDK]
• Some maemo work done (mClock, tabletSearch, packaging wiki)
• An N800 and a N810
• Participant in Summit 2008 and 2009
• Karma "position" somewhere in the top 150 :rolleyes:
• Experience in the full life-cycle of software development, from A-Z (idea-concept-realisation-marketing-release-support)
• An understanding of the hardcore engineering under the engine without getting lost in details
• An understanding for the needs of the "common people" in the mobile space, being able to abstract between technical "nerds-needs" and mass consumer appeal (use-cases, expectations, usability, accesibility)
• Two months of spare time to invest in Maemo in September and October :-) (I'm currently switching employer and have some massive overtime to compensate).
• No financial interests :-)

Hi, thanks and yes I know them, they've been quite well covered in all the media. Cool stuff and I'm very curious how the whole augmented reality thing is going to evolve in the near future!
