Problem with GPE Calender
 

When I open GPE Calender it automatically shows me the agenda view, and if I click on another view, it exits the program. The data is still there, it just wont display the calender view. Just before this started to occur, I had downloaded GPE To Do, but I don't know if that is related. Around that time, I greatly expanded the number of repositories in my tablet. A day or two before all this, I downloaded Seqretary. And a day before that, I had downloaded personal launcher (I've been busy). I have deleted all the applications that I downloaded, but that hasnt fixed the problem, even after a reboot. I downloaded calender itself almost a year ago, and it has worked fine all this time. I'm running OS 2008 on an n800. Any ideas?

Must be something in the air....I had the identical situation this week. However, after I uninstalled Seqretary and Personal Launcher, then rebooted, it straightened out. You might try a reinstall of GPE Calendar (hopefully it's backed up on Google) and see if that helps.

You might start the app from xterm and look at stdout and stderr output:

~ $ run-standalone.sh gpe-calendar

I experience occasional crashes of gpe-calendar, too, but I am clueless. Now I deactivated one of the calendars from google that I subscribed to ("Ferien NRW"), and which looked wrong, but this is just a try.

Unfortunately I dont know what "run from xterm" means. I have nothing on Google.

If I reinstall Calender will I lose all my data?

No. But, you may want to make a backup of your system just to be sure. Also, if you use Erminig to sunc with Google Calendar, you could just resync after reinstalling. But, you shouldn't lose your data.

Yes. There is not way to "reinstall" an app when it is currently installed (only update).

Tried the uninstall and re-install, and it didn't work- still have the same problem. What could cause a newly installed version of calender to be unable to display any view but agenda? By the way, I didn't lose the data.

Could just be a broken component in the code. I don't know. I haven't used GPE in some time now.

"run from xterm" = start the "X Terminal" application (osso_xterm), type "run-standalone.sh gpe-calendar" without the quotes, hit the enter key.

But I guess if you have no experience with the Unix shell command line interface, this will make little sense.

No, I have only a general idea what you're talking about, but if it is likely to solve my problem, I will learn how to do it. Keeping track of my appointments is 50% of what I use the NIT for (the other 50 is the web). How likely is it that Xterm will identify what is wrong?

Perhaps it's your calendar data that has become corrupted -- only a guess. you could try renaming /home/user/.gpe/calendar and see if having GPE build a new calendar helps.

Xterm is the icon with a black box and a dollar sign in the middle :)

Well, it fixed itself. The only thing I did was go into the application manager and remove all the repositories that I had added earlier (I left that step for last because it was the most labor intensive). As soon as I did it I tried to run calender again and it didnt help, even after looking for updates. Later that day, calender view was back. I had not rebooted. Some sort of delayed effect, perhaps? I dont know, a minor mystery. Thank you everyone, for your kind assistance.

This is a known problem in the current version of GPE Calendar in Extras. If you have the sidebar disabled and switch to/from the agenda view it is likely to crash.

This is fixed in the Beta version of GPE Calendar. That is available in the extras-devel repository but I haven't released it to Extras because there are reports of a problem with the homepage applet (gpesummary) and I haven't had time to track them down.

Your best option is either to avoid the agenda view (many people, including me, do not use it) or try the Beta version. There are instructions on installing the Beta version at http://talk.maemo.org/showthread.php?t=22219.

After all this time, I have found a work-around. I am posting this here for anyone who may also have this problem. When in agenda view, using the drop-down menu, in View, enable the sidebar, then enable calendar. You should now see a text-style calender in a sidebar next to the agenda. Now use the drop-down menu to select "Month" (or which ever option you wish at this point) and the colorized version of the monthly calender should have replaced the agenda. Unselect sidebar, and the text-style calender will disapear, leaving only Month view. I find you have to do this every time you reboot the tablet.
