Nokia 500: Nokia's Windows CE Nagivation Unlocked

Hi everybody
My elder brother had bought a nokia navigation device for his car.
It is called nokia 500.it is running on windows ce.
After hacking & unlocking process.it turns into a real computer.
Im using igo gps software instead of nokia's software.
And there is a software package called miopocket.
it is very usefull within a lot of application.

here are some photos:

i have got an idea in my head that always make me think
would be it be better if our tablets would be windows xp or something instead of linux??

let me know your reviews ;)

Linux is way more like a "real computer" than Windows CE is. Also, Windows CE is not "real computers" ' Windows.

Also, who was that blogger who said that Nokia and Microsoft were "bitter rivals"?

Your entire post shows why they should not be running something that is not Linux. Did I have to hack my tablet to play films? No, all that was required was me enabling Extras and installing MPlayer. Bada bing, bada boom.

If the tablets ran XP, that'd mean they'd have to use an X86 processor. Since that'd totally **** up battery life, it would defeat the point of "tablets".

I apologise for the tone that I employed in this post. That's all, however.

No reason to give the guy so much grief, he's just asking. That's how we learn. ;)

qwerty, you missed the point of his post. He hacked his navigation device to do something other than navigation. It would seem his Nokia nav unit is running Windows CE, so he hacked it to install and run CE apps on it and modify system settings.

I did the same thing with my Navigon unit, which also runs Windows CE. Try doing this with an embedded Linux device. TomTom's nav devices run embedded Linux, and I found no way of hacking into it and installing any available apps (there are none, even if they were, selection would not be close to number of WinCE apps) on it without serious mod/recompiling (not that I know how).

I have one of those 500s, and this is an inspiration. I'll investigate doing something with it rather than using it as a dust-gatherer...

I meant writing text

Which I don't find there,
maybe I still miss something.

Please , again !

@ KristianW, if I understand your question, this is not the first time I've seen some misunderstanding around the insert image issue and the link that answers the question; vBulletin needs to separate the "add attachment" answer from the "insert image" answer. Use the link and scroll down to "How do I add an image to a post?", ignore the first paragraph in that section, (meaning ignore the paragraph that starts "If you have uploaded") -- it doesn't belong there if clarity is what they're after -- look at the second paragraph which starts with "To include an image that is not uploaded..."

To directly answer (what I think is) your question, you can either:

1) type your text and use the "Insert Image" http://talk.maemo.org/images/editor/insertimage.gif wherever you want images among your text. Continue to Insert Image and insert text wherever you want, or

2) use [IMG][/IMG] tags around the pic URL and treat the post as you would treat regular HTML, (minus the text tags), meaning text gets treated in a regular manner, but images need [IMG][/IMG] tags, as if they were being put in an html document.

Joe.

THANKS a LOT , Joe !!

I read that paragraph, and mistakenly thought it had to do only with pic's on the web.
And that what I looked for was somewhere else.
Us beginners and HTML ignorants - -

With some experimenting I'll probably get to grips with it.

Thanks , Joe !!

It's a shame there isn't one. If there were I would give this post a big thanks:

I guess some people must think that threads in the "off topic" forum can be hijacked to what ever off topic you want.

Mind to share more info, please? I also have an old 'standalone' gps running winCE. I would love to make it do something else. TIA,

For the record, I was referring (even in the original post) to a blogger from a certain mainstream blog, who even rebated the idea that nokia & microsoft were not "bitter rivals" even when most comments said otherwise. Sorry if anyone though I was referring to them.

I did not know the existence of the Nokia 500, but it sounds like pretty much any other WinCE based PNA -- normally those have a SD card with either some launcher or map application whose .exe you can replace to whatever you want, including a File browser.
I believe this is a safe way to start hacking around it; I'm telling because it's easy to left some of these units bricked -- having a malfunctioning, undocumented or inexistent hard reset feature (my unit's case), or a easy-to-corrupt system image in the NAND chip due to poor protection.
So be careful, but enjoy :)
