First N900 Review

"Those who are familiar with Diablo (Maemo 4.2) will feel right at home with the N900: same on-screen keyboards (despite the phone having a hardware one) and it’s considerably easier to switch input languages than in S60-powered devices. All in all, not much has changed, it even sports the same memory setup. The phone’s 800x480 pixel resistive screen (pretty responsive, by the way) is great for watching videos and the kickstand mounted on the N900 only helps the experience. Perhaps they’ll decide to throw in a stylus into the box, much like the one that came with the Nokia N97."

"Dialling Pad" ?!?

I don't have the thing in my hands, but screw it... I'm filing a bug anyways!

Apparently, the fullscreen hw key is now apparently a soft button in the upper left corner, and there is no ESC key. The $64,000 question is:

If you are in full screen mode, then how do you get out of full screen mode?

Re: First N900 Review

"dialling" is an acceptable British spelling.

The English is awkward in many places, and some of what was put forth I knew a year ago, BUT it was STILL very informative. Nice.

Yes, the same country that brought us "Follow the sun" coverage as a formal term for 24-hour support (see ITIL V3 spec).

That's what I thought at first too! But then would that make it tricky (at the least) for an app to use the accelerometer for other functions while in full screen mode?

Yeah, what the hell? It should certainly sell better than the N97, and I bet a lot of people are willing to pay the extra vs. the 5800 just because it runs Linux.

OR

Is it because the RX-71 is going to be even MORE awesome?

That's approximately what the iPhone 3GS costs, NPV...

Re: First N900 Review

To return from fullscreen, I assume you can set a keyboard shortcut under Control Panel/Bluetooth Keyboard/Shortcuts, just like the n810

These can be edited to any key combination you want.

Personally I hate the silly design aesthetic of no buttons on a sleek face of a phone. It's pure form over function, good tool design makes the function of the tool it's beauty. But phones seem to be sold more on sex appeal, than usefulness.

I know eldar has great reputation but i don't think he has the knowledge or experience about maemo when compared to most of our long term maemo community members.

I had hoped Nokia might begin the developer device program earlier this time, before the announcement/release even. I'd like to see developers have devices in their hand quickly after the release this time. In the past there's been some awkwardness with new-device-holding users begging for fixes, tweaks, and enhancements from developers still waiting for coupons.

EDIT: As qole correctly points out below, it's a bit early for me to write Nokia off already. The device announcement hasn't come yet, and there may be plenty of time between it and the release for Nokia to run a developer device program. My apologies.

Maybe he means an extra stylus in the box - like it came with an N810 in the box.

That does look like a stylus in fact in the device.

Wow, that's a bit of a surprise... You're talking like this was an official announcement, not a leak by some Russian journalist with an illegal prototype! As you keep pointing out yourself, the announcement hasn't happened, let alone the release...

But I completely agree with the sentiments expressed in your post...
