Usable Dictionaries for SDict Viewer?
I have installed SDict viewer and downloaded MW-Collegiate dictionary (15M file) from sdict.com but it's word-list is very limited.
Are the dictionaries at sdict.com demo-versions? any purchase (or DIY) options i'm not aware of? |
RE: Usable Dictionaries for SDict Viewer?
Oops! I was wrong about demo-versions. These are complete (and usable) dictionary bases.
I got alarmed due to N770 keyboard taking the 1st alphabet in upper case, and sdict viewer is case sensitive (i.e. 'Truth' is not 'truth') -- |
About that uppercase starting, is there any way to switch that off?
BTW, sdict.com also sports CIA factbook and loads of other interesting stuff! Thanks for getting me on to this one! ;-) |

Yes u can turn 'auto-capitalize' feature off in Keyboard settings (accessible thru control panel) But no, that setting has no effect on sdict-viewer. -- |
Yeah, found that - and found that it doesn't do any good for sdict.... :-)
Any rc file hacks for this? Guess it's not such a big deal, but hey, it runs Linux so it should bow to my command, no? ;-) edit: BTW am I the only one who cannot manage to download dictionaries from sdict.com with the 770 directly? I manage to get the download started after filling in the kaptcha, but after that it just stalls - tried opera and minimo, neither worked.... |

My lips are sealed. Remark: anyone can read this forum though.... |

I'm struggling to get this to work. I have Python, I installed the latest Sdict and transferred .dct files from my pc. But when I open any file, it says 'loading' for a minute or two, and then nada. No words are displayed, searches yield nothing. Very frustrating as I really need a dictionary on my 770...any ideas what it might be?

Drewvt,
SDict Viewer doesn't show list of words until you start typing - then you'll get first 20 words that start with whatever letters you typed into word input field. It may appear that nothing is found if, for example, you have Greek-English dictionary and start typing in English. Also keep in mind that word lookup is case sensitive (although some dictionaries have two entries for each word to make it look like it works). If a dictionary is successfully opened you should get it's name in the application's title and you should also be able to see more details in "Info...". It is also possible, even though not very likely, that dictionary files you are trying to use got corrupted during download and/or transfer. SDict Viewer only performs very basic verification of dict file's header and doesn't have a way to ensure dicts integrity, so if file is corrupted - all bets are off. Hope this helps. |
Thanks a lot for your help, I was able to download and transfer the .dct in a different way from before and it works, so it must indeed have been some sort of corruption issue. As mentioned before on this thread, that sdict.com site behaves in strange ways.
