n900 can tether with a e series or n series, right?

I have an e71, AT&T 3.5G and I am in no mood to switch carriers.

Will the n900 offer all the functionality that the n810 offers right now? Can I use it as an "internet tablet" rather than a cell phone? Can I connect the n900 to my e71 and be able to browse at 3.5G speeds on it?

(also, I am guessing the Assisted-GPS is not going to work since the n900 won't be receiving any cellular connection. But I can nevertheless still connect to the GPS satellites right, albeit taking a while to do so?)

Additionally, anything that the n810 can do but the n900 can't (or needs a SIM card to do?)

The N900 doesn't need to support anything special, because S60 already has Joikuspot.

Tethering won't be supported out-of-the box afaik - however it's been said this shouldn't be a problem for the community to implement, think there is even some nokia-guy having a presentation about it on the Maemo Summit coming up - correct me if I'm wrong.

GPS should work just as you say.

EDIT: Other thread on tethering: http://talk.maemo.org/showthread.php?t=31057

Yes with N900 you can (just like with N8x0), specify the Nokia E71 as modem (BlueTooth DUN).

Note to 2 posters above: he is talking about using the Maemo device as tethering _client_.

A-GPS should work without Internet connection except initially to get almanac data. If it is required you could in any case tether your Maemo device to your Nokia E71.

Unfortunately AdHoc WiFi is absolutely brutal on the battery life.

Yes, they're aware of that fact. The BlueZ guy at the Summit should be talking about unsupported Bluetooth profiles. DUN (for client connectivity) is, apparently, trivial to install.

Sorry to dig up this thread, but now that the device has been released and some people have beta units, I wanted to confirm the tethering info.

I want to tether an N900 to my Blackberry as a client. (i.e. use my BB data plan, no SIM in the N900.) Can the N900 act as a DUN client, and is the software native? Also, can it be done via Bluetooth, or must it be done via cable?

Out of the box, the N900 does not support Bluetooth DUN client. It was removed from Maemo 5 as the N900 is itself a phone. I haven't yet seen a community hack or tool to add the support back in.

I'm not sure if tethering via the USB cable is possible.

N900 can tether through PC/Ovi Suite
See - http://nokiaexperts.com/nokia-n900-t...s-pc-pc-suite/

Only drawback is it's for PC machines..ideally an app like Joikuspot would be good.

That's in the opposite direction, ie using the N900 as a modem for another computer rather than using another phone as a modem for the N900.

Thank you for the info. I'm definitely keeping an eye out for it.

Note to any devs on the forum: I don't know how many people this will be important to. But T-mo in the US has poor coverage, and I think a fair number of people would like to be able to tether to another phone (Blackberry, etc.) for superior data coverage, either regularly or in a pinch.

The idea to code an app for the N900 so you access data on another mobile's modem via Bluetooth DUN certainly has my vote!

This has been a dream function with the N810.

That way phone for business contacts and calls and tablet tethered for fun with media and general surfing with the excellent maemo web browser.

Found this. Looks very promising. The author, Philip has even alluded to packaging it up when he gets a moment to do so.

No need to post this to every thread. Besides it's not for tethering N900 through some other device, but for tethering other devices through N900.
