GMail set up help ..please
After a month, I am still struggling to figure out how to set up my Gmail. I am half way there as I can send messages successfully, but still cannot receive. I followed a fellow forum subscriber's instruction as shown below...
----------------- Account name: your email address.. for example blahblah@gmail.com Account type: pop3 Name: (your name ) user name: your full email address password: your email password E-mail address: self explanatory Incoming server (pop3): pop.gmail.com Outgoing server (SMTP): smtp.gmail.com use connection-specific smtp servers: check then hit configure under smtp servers and hit edit Server name: smtp.gmail.com Smtp authentication: login Username: email address PAssword: your password security: SSL outgoing email port: 465 then hit ok and then close then you should get a message saying account set up is complete, hit advanced and under retrieval Retrieve: headers only leave email on server: check email sixe limit: 1000 Password authentication: normal Security: SSL (pop3s) under sending Smtp authentication: login username and then password: the usual Security: SSL outgoing email port: 465 under the composing tab you really dont need to do anything under security, just check the last two options leave everything blank ----------------------- I rechecked my password to ensure they are correct, and I am thinking anyone looking at this forum should be able to pinpoint what my problem might be. Thank you for your time, and please let me know what I am doing wrong. Some suggested using 995 as email port, but this did not work |
Here's what works for me. This assumes you've setup pop3 on your gmail account.
Account name: gmail Account type: POP3 Name: your name i.e. Joe User name: your gmail username i.e. banditrider Password: your gmail password E-mail address: your full email address i.e. banditrider@gmail.com Incoming server(POP3): pop.gmail.com Outgoing server(SMTP): smtp.gmail.com Use connection specific SMTP servers: Un-checked Advanced Retrieval tab Retrieve: Headers only Leave email on server: Checked Email size limit (kb): 1000 Password authentication: Normal Security: SSL (POP3S) Incoming e-mail port: 995 (you need to scroll down to see this) Sending tab SMTP authentication: Login Username: full email address i.e. banditrider@gmail.com Password: gmail password Security: Normal (TLS) Outgoing e-mail port: 587 Compositing tab Default e-mail format: Formatted text (HTML) Send email: Immediately Include original in reply: Checked Request read report: Un-checked Security tab Only the last two items are checked Again, If you haven't set your account to pop3 at gmail.com, you won't be able to read mail. |
Any more suggestions setting up Gmail?
Okay, I tried the new setting and for some reason it was not allowing me to "send or receive" email. Therefore, I reverted it back to the original settings described on my original post, so I could at least send it.
All replied emails are received on my PC gmail account, but not on my 770. I keep thinking my incoming email port is the problem. Should I change this to 995, with everything else set up like the original post? If there are others who could kindly check their settings and let me know, it would be greatly appreciated. Thanks. |
Are you sure your gmail account is set-up for pop3?
|
I think I am correctly set up for POP3... But, how can I make sure I've set it up correctly?
When I first got 770, the gmail set up process would not allow me to finish, so I had to go to my PC and set up my account. Perhaps this is where I did it wrong? My gmail account works fine on my PC (both send and receive). Should I open new account? I hate to have two separate gmail addresses (for 770 and PC) though. Thank you for your time. |
When you say it works on your PC, do you mean with a web browser or an email client like Thunderbird?
|
On the web, I go to Google email site (mail.google.com). I sign in with the same user name and password that I use for gmail account on 770. From here, I can send or receive using my gmail account with my @gmail.com address. I actually love this email application, and it would be wonderful if it works on 770. Thanks.

Go to the Gmail webpage with your PC and log-in.
In the upper right-hand corner click on Settings. On the Settings page, click on Forwarding and POP. Next to POP Download 1. Status: Does it say POP is enabled? If not, Check Enable POP only for mail that arrives from now on. Select an option for #2 (I keep Gmail's copy in the Inbox) Then click Save Changes. There's a link in #3 that shows how to configure most email clients (I use Thunderbird 1.5) |
Sorry for not checking this forum often enough to see if my question's been answered. (I keep waiting for email notifications...)
Okay, I went to my PC, and followed your instruction to find out my POP was not enabled which was corrected immediately. Before changing #3 (configure email client) to Outlook which I use, I sent a test message to Gmail. My PC received it, but again, my 770 kept saying "Authentication to pop.gmail.com failed...." The reason I did not configure my email client is that it is not my intention to "forward" my messages to 770. I am just trying to use gmail account to receive mail directly from anyone sending it to my gmail address. Thus, if I have no problem getting my gmail messages on Google mail site, I am thinking there is no need to configure email client. Am I correct? I keep thinking it's my 770 that is not set up correctly... Thank you for your help! |
Err, you can enable email notifications in your profile page.
|
OK, now you have POP3 enabled for your gmail account.
The Authentication failed message means your username or password is wrong or you don't have the security set to SSL. Username should not contain "@gmail.com" Now go back to my original settings above (post #2) in this thread. |
I think I am going to give up. I changed everything per instruction on your post #2, and it still says Authentication failed. However, now I can send out mails. Still nothing coming in. Oh, well, I will just need to be happy to be able to send messages from my 770. Thanks for all your help.
|
Don't give up. Re-check your username and password.
|
Thanks for hanging with me. I have changed my username and password about 5 times, and all settings are exactly what your post #2 described. I still get "authentication to pop.gmail.com failed..." message.
Now if could go back to my post #9, it said I did not complete step 3 on my PC. Do you think this could be a problem? Again, I do not want "forwarded email", and that's why I did not complete step 3 on my PC. |
> Before changing #3 (configure email client) to Outlook which I use,
Item 3 on the "Forwarding and POP" page just leads to instructions, it doesn't change any settings. My 770's POP3 settings are User name: <my address including @gmail.com> Incoming Server: pop.gmail.com Security: SSL Incoming email port: 995 The gmail help says that you can use ports 465 or 587 for SMTP (hence the different suggestions), but 995 is the only one listed for POP3 retrieval. The help page also says "Did you click 'Save Changes' after enabling POP in Gmail?" It doesn't help that mail clients sometimes confuse the terms TLS and SSL. I just checked and it worked now with the settings above. However, when I first set it up a few months ago, it didn't work simply because POP access was down (as I found when I tried using a mail client on a PC). |
It seems some of the settings are not critical as I tried settings of both Post #1 and #2. Both settings work for outgoing emails, but I cannot get it to work with incoming mail.
I will be glad to try everything as long as suggestions keep coming! Thanks to all making suggestions. |
You have to set up POP3 on your gmail account. It does not forward your email, it just allows you to read it with a pop3 client like outlook or the 770.
|
I too cannot get gmail to work on my 770. I have tried all of the settings mentioned here and continue to get the "authentication to pop.gmail.com failed" Could this be an issue w/ OS2006?
|
No, it's not an OS2006 issue.
I recommend you first get gmail (pop3) working on your PC using Outlook, Outlook Express, Thunderbird or some other POP3 client. Then you'll have all the settings you need for the 770. |
Did you get this working? I have the same problem. Everything works on my Treo but not my 770. Thanks
|
Now got it working!
Thanks to all the previous replies I have got Gmail working. For reference to others I found that the port numbers seemed to change when different security options are selected. I had to go back and reset them to be sure. Once I did this it worked.
|
I am having exactly the same issues as flyingyeti. Both smtp and pop are not working. he 770 states that the smtp server smtp.gmail.com does not exist .... then it gives an error about ssl.
I have exactly the setting as per above with ports etc ..... just doesn't work. |
If it says that smtp.gmail.com doesn't exist then it's a DNS problem. Your dhcp server (assuming you're connected through some wi-fi access point) should have given you a DNS that can resolve the address.
