DIY service @ Maemo Summit 2009 ? (proposal)

It appears that my N810 has joined the ranks of those with an ill-behaving touchscreen but unfortunately it is a second-hand device whose warranty state is yet uncertain.

Even though I've seen the instructions for disassembly, I do not trust myself with such delicate hw and no appropriate tools.

Would it be heresy to ask for some Nokia people to bring a toolbox to the Maemo Summit and setup an informal service desk? Or at least lease them to a group of trusted users?

Any comments?

(posting it here since I don't know whether it is acceptable to edit the Summit page or not)

That's a very interesting idea. I love it. Not sure Nokia would be able to bring anything, but I'm sure we could maybe have a volunteer that could help you at some point.

Anyone interested?

I'm going to beg Nokia to get a double handful of styluses ... stylii?

I'm sure most of us could use an extra stylus or three for our various devices...

Unfortunately the "Maemo on Beagleboard" project is basically dead. Otherwise i'd love to contribute to a maemo hardware hacking workshop. But "just" repairing devices doesn't sound too exciting.

You could build something funky with the dead 770s I have ... :D

This thread probably fits better in Community.

For what I know, Nokia will send many different profiles to the Summit but none of them actually skilled disassembling devices. Such task, and such tools, belong to the Nokia Care points and the repair experts sitting somewhere in the World.

In a similar way, we don't work in places with plenty of accessories around. I will ask around about styluses of tablets but can't guarantee anything.

Yeah, I know accessories and tools are not "dispersed" in the offices (been there, saw that), it was just a wild shot: whatever you can bring (starting from yourself, upwards :-) is fine.

Hm. I thought in Espoo, they might have Stylus Trees and
There's a lake of stew and of whiskey too
You can paddle all around 'em in a big canoe
In Espoo, Nokia's Hometown.[1]

well, i don't have a haiku for this, but don't forget the official nokia care teardown guide for the n810!

http://talk.maemo.org/showthread.php?t=15751

i've used this guide to teardown and make the slider more stiff after losening over time.
the only tools i used were a small jewlers phillips screwdriver and a plastic type wedge/pry tool from and ipod repair kit.

be brave! it's not that bad. the only thing to worry about are the flex connectors.

good luck!

Precisely: the docs I have (far more complete & detailed... use google ;-) explicitly state that the flex assembly (and screws too, go figure) should be discarded if removed. I am understandably a bit cautious.

No no, they're fruit. When they ripen you pluck them. :D

Okay, here's what I can bring if anyone has uses...

-a few malfunctioning 770s
-a few 770 slide-on covers
-a couple of N800 faceplates (yeah I found more!)
-some odds and ends for various phones
-an old model working phone or two
-some broken phones
-a refurbished 770 with accessories in box

I can provide details later, but odds are I'll bring what makes sense. We could keep the stuff at the maemo.org booth.

I'm sure there may be some demand for the covers, faceplates, and even the 770 refurb. So I'm open to ideas on how to make distributing them fair and fun.

Sounds like a good place for a "post your sob story" thread and have the community vote on it. Or as we saw the wall of notecards with comments at Nokia World, have people jot down their 770's ailment or similar need and have other attendees vote. (get a mic and a decibel meter just for kicks, unless some skilled dev works out the N900-as-wireless-mic code in time)

Or simply draw names from a maemo.org hat.

Curiosity not only killed the cat but for all practical purposes my N810 too: if anything, my attempt to open it up and re-seat the cable has only made the problem worse. Plus the screws are... need I say? Screwed.

EDIT: fast-forward a few days, the touchscreen is not responding anymore. Guess I have to come up with a creative use for a dead N810.
