"NokiaUsers-social" - a competitor for Facebook

"NokiaUsers-social" - a competitor for Facebook

The new thing from Nokia. Would be this good in order to attract customers? IMHO I think it would be a necessity for Nokia.
Nokia, now as a "service company" how it likes to redefine itself, for customer retention, Nokia needs to have its own brand service "NokiaUsers-social-page" (or what would be better name?), sort of Facebook), based on Ovi services but integrated in one page. It is not that hard to have a personal page, supporting blog, once the rest of infrastracture (posting images, videos, other files, email, IM) is already in OVI and can be easily integrated in a service "NokiaUsers-social-page" called however they find a proper name ("facebook" and "hi5" names are taken :p) . Nokia can also buy a small company that does this kind of thing and integrate it with ovi services for this purpose.
Why to do this "NokiaUsers-social-page", besides integrating services from Facebook?
* because Nokia has this power to do this, power given by the large user-base, iPhone only has 30 million user-base, but Nokia has 300 million users, more than Facebook users, and if these users are presented with an easy creation / registration for this social page, which can require only a "nickname" because the phone number can be used as an id, then many nokia users will be registered to the "social service"
* because integration with Facebook is offered by Android (HTC, Motorola, Samsung), Apple (iPhone), RIM (Blackberry), so to be somehow more special, Nokia can offer both integration with "Facebook" and "NokiaUsers-Social-Page"
* "NokiaUsers-Social-Page" can be intergrated in Symbian, so existing (millions) and new Symbian users can easily benefit from it

I was thinking about a Nokia service like "Facebook", see here the original posting:
http://talk.maemo.org/showpost.php?p...3&postcount=48

and today I read in the news that actually Nokia does something in this sense:
http://www.nokiausers.net/Nokia-Pres...t-Shelved.html

quote>>>
Nokia recently acquired the small company Plum which specialized in Social Media Networking, and still have an active member base. It is very similar to that of Facebook, but lets you manage your Groups better. Contacts, and feeds and how you want them shared.
Many people have set up two Facebook accounts, one for professional usage, and another for friends and family, or for actual people, and friends they have actually met in person face to face. This is where Plum comes into its own, allowing you to easily manage your feeds, and contacts so you only show certain information shared with those people you choose to share with.
<<end of quote from Nokia-Acquires-Plum: Nokia-Friend-View-Project

>>> Another thing is why Nokia is using Facebook when with its user base it can create a NokiaUsers platform which has Ovi share as repository for pictures, videos, but everyting to be integrated in the "NokiaUsers" - a better name for this facebook clone is needed, but Nokia needs to lead and in order to do that they need to promote their own services and brands to attract people.

I'm a MySpace guy myself, and I think Nokia should buy them but won't. The next best thing would be creating an Ovispace, but it allows you to integrate your MySpace, Facebook, Orkut, Hi5 and OviChat accounts into one interface. I've been begging for awhile, but Facebook got iPhone love, and no one can see the value of the media rich MySpace. Nokia's position as a media and web company, with CWM and the upcoming video store, fits perfect with MySpace.

Nokia Friend View project is completed.

Unfortunately, "Friend View" project is closed.

On its web site, http://friendview.nokia.com , Nokia wrote:

"Friend View has closed its registration, ... you can only use it if you have an account already."

Download is available for Nokia devices with Symbian s60v5 (touch) and all Symbian s60v3... A lot of effort has been put into this software, just to be closed now...!?!

Or maybe this is because they want to integrate it with "Plum" they just bougth yesterday, and release the new Nokia's "facebook like" application?

I did not know about this "Frend View" project (which is closed now), just I was thinking Nokia should create an application like Facebook and put it in every phone, with easy registration or even no registration, just using your phone number and your name from your "caller ID". I was thinking about this before I found out Nokia had this Friend View and bougth "Plum" which might mean Nokia actually might want to create a Facebook clone after all.

Important Note to Friend Viewers: Nokia Friend View is an experimental research project from Nokia Research Center. The Friend View project is being moved to the Beta Labs "Archived" section (http://betalabs.nokia.com/betas/archived), and will be discontinued (shut down) on September 30, 2009. More details about this will be available here: http://betalabs.nokia.com/betas/view/nokia-friend-view.

Thank you very much for helping us by participating in the Friend View project, and for all your feedback which will help Nokia to improve its services!

Many thanks,
The Friend View team
I take it, they are just going to kill it. Obviously the purchase of Plum will likely lead to either a re-branded Plum site or a merging of these two social sites, reborn as a new social network.

*shakes finger at Nokia* Quit abandoning your projects.

Why? / Why not?

B/c FB has 300 million users (I just read that today in WSJ). Social networking sites are ultimately as valuable as the people that are on them. If your friends are on MySpace, you might join MySpace. If they are on FB, you might join FB. But that's a chicken & egg problem for any site trying to enter that space. On top of it, each social networking site you join requires effort to maintain, so I for one want to keep mine to a minimum.

But it might be a way to enhance Ovi, I suppose. Microsoft is trying to add social networking to Hotmail after all, since they have a nice user base to build from, despite the fact that I find the thought of doing social networking on Windows Live unspeakably lame. Not that they asked my opinion. :D

Microsoft adds social networking to hotmail/live, and yahoo does it too on yahoo mail, google does it too.

Nokia has a user base, so trying to enhance OVI services is good.

And yes, I agree, once someone is on a social network where all his friends are, there is not an easy option to move to other So-Net. But there are always new users and users who have friends on many So-Nets like MySpace, Hi5, twitter, yahoo, etc. These people will try for sure a new service that has traction.

I would prefer they fix the foundation cracks first before adding rooms.

But then, I'm a nice guy.

Yes, you are perfectly right, there are some cracks that need attention first, before trying to expand the services. I know. I had my issues with Symbian I posted about. Some things can be done more simple and user-friendly. This where Nokia should learn. Not all the users are engineers like the designers of the devices or services.

Really, Ovi needs to fix Contacts first and foremost IMO, because that's central to so many other things. Then Email. When those are working as they should, then maybe Ovi is ready to test social networking.

Well, I didn't use the application Nokia "Friend-View", but from what I see in this screen-shots, it didn't look bad at all. Maybe this will be integrated in the Plum, yes.

Do you think Nokia should create its own social service like "Facebook" or like yahoo, google and hotmail are trying to catch-up with this social networking trend?

I added the screen-shots as promised, actually you can see some of them at the beta labs archived projects: http://betalabs.nokia.com/betas/view/nokia-friend-view
http://talk.maemo.org/attachment.php...1&d=1253207616 http://talk.maemo.org/attachment.php...1&d=1253136560

This application is now closed,as well its registration on the website: http://friendview.nokia.com
The Friend View project will be discontinued (shut down) on September 30, 2009.

I am not a big user of Facebook myself, a user that looks daily many times on his page for updates from friends... I am just a moderate user, it can pass a day or two without checking my facebook page. I am also using Hi5, but even more rarely, and I don't have a twitter account yet, so personally I cannot tell much if the Nokia Friend View added value to the Social Networking world in comparison with other Soc-Net applications (I did not use it).

If you are a facebook avid user, what do you think looking at the screen-shots above about the former "Friend-View" app, was it good, what else would have been needed?

I'm not an avid Facebook user, though I do have an account that aggregates some of my activity elsewhere on the web (Twitter, Flickr, YouTube, etc.). I also have a Nokia Friend View account.

Friend View had potential. If you had lots of friends, and many of them used S60 phones, and they didn't live too far away, and they didn't mind broadcasting their whereabouts to you, and they installed the Friend View client and kept it running, there was a definite chance of finding yourself just around the corner from someone you hadn't seen for a while and getting together for coffee and a nice chat you would have otherwise missed.

Lacking nearly all of the above, and not being a coffee drinker anyway, Friend View didn't work out so well for me:

I never did bump into lcuk or qgil, my only friends.

Regardless, I had hoped for a Maemo client, as native (rather than web-based) Friend View would have been fantastic during Maemo Summits. "Hey, qole and Jaffa are just across the street in that seafood-pizza restaurant. Let's join them!"

Re: "NokiaUsers-social" - a competitor for Facebook

I know Nokia is a huge company, but from time to time I feel they lack aggressiveness in the market. This is specially evident in their social networking solutions. I feel like they are just experimenting with various solutions and providers and not really going anywhere. They should out right buy an already established company like Facebook or MySpace and concentrate on that, or go full blown on Ovi Services and integrate everything soo seamlessly that people won't even know whats behind the interface. I feel in this current highly evolving market slow experiments gain nothing...
