how can I play an audio cd?

Hi,

I have all the needed hardware/software for my N810 so that I can use a usb cd drive, and I can see the contents of a data cd when it is all set up, however I am struggling to be able to read audio cd's.

Has anyone managed to play an audio cd on their tablet, and if so, how?

Re: how can I play an audio cd?

That's going to be one of the rarest use-cases around. Rip your audio CD to mp3 or, if you're an audiophile, flac, and play those instead.

Thanks but no thanks! I want to play/read audio cd's!!

Like mount Everest: because its there to be done. It should be possible, it just needs someone to go do it!

Data Cd's are recognized OK, but none of the media players can be coerced into reading an audio Cd - I suppose because they don't expect to find a Cd:(

Best reason to do just about anything. :D

Right, the mount everest thing applies, but the analogy is a little lopsided. To translate the analogy to this scenario you should change it to: "I want *you* to climb mount everest because it's there." How about I meet you halfway and give you some advice on your ascent instead of climbing it for you: Try xmms. I think it has an audio cd plugin. If it isn't built for maemo you might have to build it yourself (or use easy-debian and chroot into it).

Hey, Johnx, good call!

You can find xmms (and the cdread plugin) by searching gronmayer for xmms.

Re: how can I play an audio cd?

You can get or make a male<->male 3.5mm audio cable and plug a cd diskman into the mic jack of the nit. It's not usb, but it's there. It's like riding an alpaca up Mt. Everest instead of walking.

Personally I like making my own cables because it's cheaper, and much more fun.

vectis 2009-09-18 19:32

Re: how can I play an audio cd?

Thanks Johnx for your advise, but I think there is nothing wrong with the analogy. I most certainly do not want you or anyone else to climb the mountain for me, I was simply looking for advise as to how it could be best done. I am sure most of the worlds best mountain climbers have accepted advise from others on how to best achieve their goal.

I shall now go away and play with xmms :)

And for the benefit of other climbers like myself, I shall report back.

how would you hear the audio signal? wouldn't you have to record it first with either maemo recorder or seqretary recorder, at very low bitrates?

I dunno :? He didn't say that he wanted to hear it... Did he? Also let's not forget that I'm not very smart.

i know the feeling; breathing all those lead fumes while making your own cables may have something to do with it.

Re: how can I play an audio cd?

I'd assume the CD has no analog audio connection, so the best you can do is to just rip it from the tablet itself (much like your desktop would do, only it would play the files while ripping them).

See cdparanoia and sons for that.

Isn't the more obvious answer put it in a hifi? ;-)

Mplayer also comes to mind. Command line of course!

Been there, tried that & failed :(

Re: how can I play an audio cd?

I think it is as the observant javispedro pointed out; you need a digital audio cable from the CD player to the tablet to hear CD audio from your tablet. I had forgotten that I couldn't listen to CDs on my computer unless that audio cable was wired in.

And ripping the CD tracks on the tablet wouldn't be the most joyous experience, especially if you tried to make MP3s (but that's your only hope)...

Wrong conclusion!!!!!!!:D

all the necessary data goes over the usb connection (I know, I just tried it!)

Voodoo six are currently playing away through my usb cdrom thats hooked up to my laptop.

I wonder if mplayer has simply been built without cd support?

Re: how can I play an audio cd?

"Digital audio cable"? No, I was talking analog. Without analog, the only way a computer can play audio cds is by ripping them. Which is what mplayer cdda:// would do. So I don't know why you're actively against ripping them.

(sorry I don't know the first thing about "digital audio cables", never used them nor did need to use them)

Either way, you did not say why mplayer cdda:// failed.

2pokey how do you input and output to the same sound card.
on the otherhand how can you input from one card and output to the other. on my retired 770 I got the proper drivers loaded for a usb soundcard. I never did figer out how to output from the device soundcard

I like this guy's attitude! :)

If anything, I'd like to see if this works. I'd LOVE to be able to read CDs so I can rip them with my N8xx tablet instead of having to depend on a laptop. Tried it awhile back on the tablet with K3b, but no luck (I'm not technical enough!)

Am not sure what your requirement is really. I had cdvd-tools.deb from penguinbait installed on my n800 http://tablethacker.com/wp/?p=194
I compiled cdtools annd cdparanoia in scratchbox, installed on device and can play the audiocd from the usb drive audio out to my external speakers using cdplay from cdtools.
Can sample the whole cd and save individual tracks in wav format using cdparanoia.
6 tracks (610mb) took around 9 minutes.

Re: how can I play an audio cd?

tekplay, you listen to the music from your drive's audio-out, right? You plug the speakers directly into the drive? I think vectis' external drive has something extra, however, as he claims he can listen to the CD through his PC's speakers.... Unless I misunderstand?

Perhaps his drive has a sound card built-in?

Re: how can I play an audio cd?

My CD collection is all ripped in OGG format...is this supported?

Edit : Just reached that point in the manual - the answer is no...mighty strange for a linux platform....

qole 2009-10-01 17:39

Re: how can I play an audio cd?

The answer is actually yes.

Every version of Maemo has had community OGG support, and Maemo 5 will be no different.

You just plug a male to male cable in from your speaker out to your line in. It's not actually what he wanted to do with his tablet. I was just kidding around. If you need some audio help, pm me, or start a new thread, so we don't hijack this one.
