N900 best-selling phone on Amazon

1 Attachment(s)
Yesterday N900 was the bestseller unlocked phone (see the top on the bottom of the page), today is #1 for unlocked phones with prices over $150... and #2 in unlocked phones top.

See the picture here as a proof, today 17-Sep-2009:

Does anyone think that the n900 may have already sold more than the n97?

Bestseller on Amazon.com (see the bottom of the page, after you select bestselling unlocked phones) where the "Continue shopping" is.

http://talk.maemo.org/attachment.php...1&d=1253246286

I still can't believe a device costing US $ 589 is selling better than all other devices (exception is the blackberry pearl wich costs only $ 149... )

no n97 sold 2 million in first couple of months nokia claim n97 is selling faster than n95 was at same stage of its life.

i hope every single one of those floods tmobile's 3g network, then they'll realize what people want

of course that would be a bad thing then, they may subsidize the phone and we would be forced to buy the "smartphone" data plan rather than the 10.00 one

N900 on Amazon.com sells unlocked for:

Price: $588 [s]($649)[/s]

http://www.amazon.com/Nokia-N900-Com.../dp/B002OB49SW

Maybe this price made it attractive and a bestseller?

I hope not, since I'll have to use T-mobile's 3G network too. I don't want the AT&T situation where you can barely get EDGE speeds on 3G in some cities because the concentration of iPhone data users are just pulverizing the network.

The picture on Amazon for N900 is not the best one, doesn't show much in the UI.

Interestingly, I just heard the IT guys at the school where I work say something similar; their wireless network has crumbled under the load of students using their iPhones on the network... You can probably guess why I was talking to them.

I guess the iPhone is doing what needs to be done here, though. Pushing the infrastructure into the 21st century, kicking and screaming.

If you have seen the Palm CEO on engadget show, he said it is important to focus (and have a direction).
Nokia has shown less focus and too much let's try and see... which is not good. For instance a Maemo phone could be done in 6 months after N810 was out, with kind of the same interface, but having telephony. They instead bought Symbian and forgot about Maemo until Symbian did NOT prove. Maybe too late in the competition with iPhone, Nokia looked again at Maemo. But even now the device is like a bastard for Nokia, N900 looks like an orphan, no carriers for it, no fight to get operators, no fight to show it to the world, no internet ads, no marketing, no TV commercials... Again, Nokia does not focus to promote this device like Apple did with iPhone, to create stories about it, to create a good light about it, to keep the device on the news... And yes, Apple is very, very focused, naming all its devices the same, creating a major brand "iPhone"...

Why Nokia does not focus?

How can you cater to close to half the market by focusing on something narrow? Not gonna happen.

Also seems like the N900 is selling incredibly well even without advertising. Why waste your money?

Although I'm sure we'll see some ads when stores finally have it on the shelf.

so then one could have os 2008 with phonecalls.....

what's the point? i see more point renewing the ui and bringing the cellphone capabilities with signifigantly improved ui and hardware so there is bigger update. and step 4 out of 5 needs big updates when comparing step 3 n810 vs iphone...

This is not bad for a phone that has just been announced and is not even available. The blogging and vlogging scene apparently has a great impact on marketing these days, and Nokia knows how to put this to use.

If you will find statistics from AT&T (the only operator having iPhone) I bet more than 70% of the smartphones bought in last 2 years are iPhone - just to give you an idea that with focus you can have more then half of the market. With one product that excels for ALL (business - office users, music - media users, gamers, etc) you can have more than with N95, 5800, N97, E71, N900 all together.

It seems N900 is in better shape than any other Nokia device, compared to N95 or E71 no question because those are only 320 resolution instead of 800, and they are not touch, and compared to 5800, that is mostly a music and location device, no business on it, compared to N97, they are closer but N900 still excels. Conclusion is N900 is the Nokia flagship device, and only NOW we can start comparison with iPhone.

But Nokia to keep this device, which come out so late, 3 years after first iPhone and N800, to keep it as an underdog, as an orphan, it is lack of marketing and market sense, IMO. This device should have come out with a NAME not another number, and to be the emblem of Nokia, and to release other Maemo devices on the same brand-NAME. IMHO Nokia does not understand masses are confused by these numbers, they want unity and ONE device, updated as design and form factor every 3 or 6 months, under the same name (with a small suffix like X, or 3G, or MINI, etc), to make it simple. And Nokia needs to advertise THAT NAME. Not a number, a number cannot be even reserved as a copyright. Maemo is not a simple and catchy name, at least not for English speaking users which don't know how to use properly the latin alphabet and need instructions on pronunciation and spelling for every new word.

Nokia needs more focus on the Maemo devices and a name for them.

Re: N900 best-selling phone on Amazon

Uh, N900, like all Nokia device names, are copyrighted and patented. And your view of the Nokia situation sounds US centric, but ignores the fact Nokia sells HALF of all the phones made, and 2 of every 5 smartphones sold. Facts say high end products get designated with numbers, and low end get letters, as in Honda Accord vs. BMW M3.

And the N95? If you recall, it outsold the iPhone. Nokia SEEMS confused, but it isn't them, but us. (though not me. I get the vision)

In UK and Europe the N900 is almost free with Vodafone (it is 29). No much need of marketing there...
http://www.mobilephonesdirect.co.uk/...62/p26078.aspx

The problem is in USA where there is no operator for N900, and actually only T-Mobile can carry it, but it didn't seem to want it.

With no operator in USA, no way of it having mass appeal. $600 is still not a cheap price. Now, iPhone 3G is only $99 on AT&T, that's a difference...

But for the unlocked segment N900 rocks! :)

Reminds me of the times when N8x0s were in the top 3 of the sales charts @amazon.com during the holiday season ... afterwards, there were rumors of exceptionally high return rates.

i wouldn't count many pre-orders as an indication of the real success of a product (although i do, of course, hope it is going to succeed).

I know :) I just saw 3 guys on Engadget show having trouble finding the keyboard or opening the phone... I don't go in details about simple scroll gesture, they simple couldn't use it as anything... this like in that question: why do you need 3 Militia-man to screw a bulb in the socket?

Yep, 3 engadget-man to screw a light-bulb: one will go onto the table and the others will just rotate the table :p

Who gave them the Nokia mobile computer phone, when iPod is enough for them? :D

Yeah :)

Anyway, I think, having a touchscreen, especially resistive (for stylus) combined with a good querty keboard WITH arrow keys, ... is the best combination an advanced user can get!

One month ago, i had the HTC Hero, wanted to play GBA, but, ... no keys to map. Onscreen keyboard was good, but by far not as good as a real keyboard... so i sold it...

By the way: Look at the price of the iPhone in germany, ... 1049€ ... and some guys were complaining about the price of 599€ for the N900...

Yep, people in Europe are not in USA. In USA there is an economic crisis, remember? That's left for US to export nowadays :D
The price in USA is $588, in Europe is 600 €. This is fair, because when the "wind of change" blows from US to Europe, transporting the phone over the ocean in opposite sense makes it loose some $$.

So, how is it in the UK like getting one on contract for 30 and then canceling the contract by paying some damages? Is that viable? In the US, it is.

If that is possible and the total (everything including the taxes) comes out to be cheaper than the amazon offered price, I would consider trying that route :) I have already pre-ordered mine at amazon.com but still $600 is a huge money. Difficult to get over this fact!

Also, did anyone try that microsoft promoted bing cashback thing? Will that work for pre-orders too?

You can have a subscription from UK if you have an address in UK.
Usually the contract stipulates you need to pay the remaining time left on contract (like 7 month left * 30$) or the price of the unlocked phone, which-one is the lower value.

Microsoft Bing gives you a percentage cashback if you search through Bing.com and buy something from one of their partner retailers (e.g. Newegg).

Why Nokia does not focus?

There's a few things that come to mind. Nokia is the single largest company in the market, it luckily does well in developing world markets too. Being the biggest ship I imagine it's harder to change course, so to speak - iPhone was a shock to the entire industry, especially Nokia - it is clear from Maemo 5 that their number one priority is services integration (by that I put an emphasis on web) as well as user experience (primarily UI design).

You are correct in being unable to identify Nokia's masterplan, I don't think they have one, the 'try and see' approach that you say seems accurate then. However they've been developing both Symbian and Maemo in parallel whilst all the while strengthening their position through strategic acquisitions (they own Navtek right?) as well as Qt, both of which are some of the most fundamental under-pinnings, or will be in the short term.

I also agree with you when you say that they could've added telephony in the N810 but instead I think they could've upped the integration in this device, although I won't know until I use it, it seems as if telephony is second fiddle. However that could be just in relative order to the good web experience you'll have on the device.

All I can say is that the N900 is a big boon for Nokia. Their marketing needs to be very in your face and focussing on these very visual features, just like the iPhone is doing. The possibility of operator partnerships also gives the device an almost infinite degree more visibility than just being a specialist device available from Nokia's own shop.

I don't think Amazon is. If you try to use shopping on Bing.com, nothing comes up for n900 (Newegg does not currently stock the n900). And no you don't need a coupon, you just need an account through Microsoft, whereever you are shopping and.. Paypal if you want the money immediately. Or if you'd like a check you have to hit X amount of dollars before they'll send you a check. Though I think it's like 10 dollars or so.

Yes, but if you take it with an expensive data plan from T-Mobile, you'll get it for 1 €, and that's what most people do.
Really paying 1000 € for a phone is beyond any sanity IMHO.
