Maemo Summit 2009 badge ideas

Rather than muddy up the wish list thread any more, I thought it better to start a new one for this.

Here's my first idea for badges. Quim (qgil) was thinking of a folded A4 sheet, so I started with that. The image below represents the left half of side one. If the right side is folded under horizontally, then the folded portion folded again vertically, you get a large badge with ID in front and the sticker graphic on the back. The right side and back can be used for maps, schedule, and other info.

http://www.cynicalsigns.com/images/Badge1-master.png

Note that the avatars may not be included in any "official" badge designs. What I had proposed was designing a default template for general use, and then let attendees design their own if they like in the spirit of openness.

Also I suspect that the left would simply say "Maemo" rather than "maemo.org" logo.

Wish list thread for additional details:

Gah-- need more feedback!

I'm thinking the names in orange might not be a good idea for distance viewing...

Call me crazy, but shouldn't you guys use a Nokia nXXX with a badge application as your badge?

It would sure be heavy...

I'm sure something could be whipped up for the N900 and Nokia could "lend" you all devices while you are there.

Please don't forget to turn them in before you leave now. :p

Velcro? Or you could have only the senior people have them? Have some nice graphics going, etc, Did a quick Google search and came across no stories, so I guess it would be a first. Submit it to Hack-A-Day, Engadget (hah), Make, etc, nice publicity. Especially showing the badge app on the n900

First badge in history that requires a security deposit! Awesome! :D

(Everyone can load the badge app to their nXXX and enter in their name.)

No way I'm wearing any of those devices as a badge.

Let's talk in maybe 10 years. ;)

I don't carry my laptop to conferences anymore since I manage completely with my N***. Dedicating my multiversatile device to fulfill a requirement that a piece of paper written with a pen manages to fulfill sounds like a bad choice.

Besides, have you looked to the schedule? How do you manage to have the display always on morning, afternoof and evening? Sure, you can always stick a piece of paper with your credentials on the display to save battery. :)

Re: Maemo Summit 2009 badge ideas

My only comment would be to make both the name and the irc/Talk nick larger, I don't really care about the rest of the design, just as long as I can quickly look at people from a distance and see who they are.

Thanks Quim.

So let's get back to actual badge ideas. Any critiques over the first idea? Any suggested changes? New ideas?

To make the name larger I might need to use a different (narrower) font. The issue is that some people may have very long names, particularly from regions such as South America and Western Asia, et al. But I'll experiment there, thanks.

Making the member name a bit bigger is not a problem I think.

And of course you will require a special badge tag: Lardman, better than random. :D

I think someone is working already in a badge proposal at Nokia. I will send them an email on Monday referring to this thread to avoid duplicate work.

Thanks texrat for the initiative!

2nd that. Large font, hight contrast color, clearly visible from a few steps away, "nothing else" to distract, function over form!

I second lardman here.

Your online name is more important than your real name on these badges.

Come on, you know what I mean. Everyone knows Texrat. Nobody knows that Randall dude.

Like many here on maemo.org, I lead this weird double life. I'd rather keep my muggle name out of it altogether, if I could.

Never trust people who have a first name for their last name (I'm looking @ you Texrat & qole :p)

With me it's even worse. All three of my names are totally interchangeable, which means they usually get mixed up on things like badges. And they're very generic, too. Best if they were left off the badge altogether.

Re: Maemo Summit 2009 badge ideas

Speaking of reality check, the data available is what registered participants have introduced at http://maemo.org/profile/edit/

What fields do you wish in the badge?

Re: Maemo Summit 2009 badge ideas

Texrat: THANK YOU for this. Even though Nokia is working on something, I'm so glad you took the lead and acted. So cool to see (when it's not me). :D

Your idea is pretty good (does need larger fonts for user name). But, I'd make all of the orange red to match with the back.

But, since it's being worked on (oh, well), I guess you don't need to do anything else.

I think First, Last, User, IRC, email would be enough (with User being the largest most prominent focus).

Re: Maemo Summit 2009 badge ideas

I'll agree with Tim. We certainly don't want to clutter it up too much. People can print up their own business cards if they want to supplement the badges.

FYI, I took the data for the idea in the first post directly from my maemo.org profile.

I'm still concerned about name lengths. As a database administrator, I was constantly frustrated by the designer's decision to limit last name fields to something like 15 characters and then I'd get a user from India who had twice that. However the solution could be to use two lines.

Also I went with the maemo.org colors on the front because the black/red theme was already represented on the back. The badges bridged the two. But then again this is probably academic. :D

Re: Maemo Summit 2009 badge ideas

Ok, so do you want to do this? It turns out that we hadn't make much progress and your first draft showed good will and skills. :)

We have A6 portrait plastic pockets: 10.5 ×14.8 centimetres.

Using an A4, the content could be:

- Full page schedule. (from the wiki, it's ok to have small fonts as it is for emergencies mostly)

- Half page map. (from westergasfabriek, I can find it as PDF)

- 2 x 1/4 page with identity (normally these pockets show in the wrong side, so a solution is to have 2 right sides) :)

The identity sides must have the Maemo Summit and westergasfabriek logos.

The database fields used for identity could be

maemo.org ID
Name Surname
Work
Primary project

You can leave space for people willing to stick avatar, logos and so on. :)

lardman 2009-09-28 12:26

Re: Maemo Summit 2009 badge ideas

Do you think we really need primary project? I'd prefer to have a list of attendees with all the info and then use more space for the Maemo ID and Name (with the work name smaller).

Which graphics do you need? Anything other than:

Texrat 2009-09-28 13:51

Re: Maemo Summit 2009 badge ideas

Yeah, I'll need what Quim mentioned above, although I'm sure some of the source might be tabular rather than graphic.

I'm also wondering what will be used for the data merge, and whether A4 sheets will be pre-printed with static content and then overlaid with names, etc...

EDIT: in fact I'll just build the schedule from the wiki table. It would be nice to have a hi-res graphic of the map though, as well as diagrams of the venue.

qole 2009-09-28 16:57

Re: Maemo Summit 2009 badge ideas

The "work" and "project" fields are actually fairly contentious. I don't want my badge saying, "Nothing Maemo related," which is what I had to put into the work field at maemo.org. I notice that there are a lot of people who have done something like me in their profiles, and it will look weird to have a bunch of people walking around with "Not Maemo related" or whatever.

This is actually a failure of maemo.org, it should have some way to make it clear that you want your corporate affiliation to be known.

I also think the fonts should be like this:

Texrat
Randall Arnold

Yep, make the nick nice and big as that's how most of us know each other :)

qgil 2009-09-29 02:53

Re: Maemo Summit 2009 badge ideas

Thanks Texrat!

I will provide graphics as soon as I get to the office.

About the content of the fields, they can be edited at http://maemo.org/profile/edit/ . I'm planning to send an email to all registered participants asking them to fill the fields with the information they want to show in their badges as soon as we agree here which are those fields.

A5 is pretty big and I believe there is space for work and primary project keeping your maemo.org ID and name big.

If you don't want to show your employer, you think it has nothing to do with Maemo, you are a student etc then you can simply leave the field empty.

The primary project is for many as important or more than their job for their public identification. "University of where? Ah, so you are the developer of Mauku!" :)

And with 400 participants is not true at all that we all know each other. Actually not many will be able to identify by the name / nickname more than 40 people (and that's 10 percent). lardman you can check your social knowledge youself at http://maemo.org/news/events/maemo_summit_2009/ :)

Qole, in your draft there is a "qole.org". Would that come from the primary project field or the personal website?

qole 2009-09-29 03:00

Re: Maemo Summit 2009 badge ideas

Quim, qole.org is my personal website.

Texrat 2009-09-29 03:05

Re: Maemo Summit 2009 badge ideas

Ok, thanks Quim.

I still need to know the printing method. Do you want to provide me a database and I can try metadata merge? If so maybe we had better test first. Or am I providing background that a service provider will overlay?

Also, my printer can handle A4, not sure if it will A5. I will see (then see where I can buy some paper as I have been reducing to US "A" size for proofs).

qgil 2009-09-29 03:18

Re: Maemo Summit 2009 badge ideas

You only need to produce 2 A4 PDFs, one for each side of the paper. We can find a printer around or use a laser printer at the office. Whether the name is printed directly on the paper or on sticker labels is almost not relevant for your design work.

You don't need to bother about A5 or A6 papers as you always will work with real A4 folded twice.

Texrat 2009-09-29 03:28

Re: Maemo Summit 2009 badge ideas

Ok, let me see if I understand correctly...

I assumed there would be some sort of metadata merge eventually with whatever I (or anyone else) produced. After all that's the easy way to get names onto the overall design. But now it sounds like I will design around the names and personal details, allowing room for their addition later. In other words I will omit real names, user names, etc and just allow room for them. Correct?

qgil 2009-09-29 03:39

Re: Maemo Summit 2009 badge ideas

We need to have badges without data anyway for those having lost their badge, media landing in the last minute, etc.

I'm not sure whether it is better to have the names printed directly or have them in separate labels. Any ideas?

Also I was not thinking on giving to you the extra responsibility of printing and bringing to Amsterdam everything. Do you want to do this or do you prefer finding a printer in Helsinki/Amsterdam?

I'd provide "designed" space holders (i.e., Username, First Name, Last Name, etc.) for the Nokia people to see. They can then use those as the spaces for the actual data merge to occur. Don't leave the design up to them. ;)
