Hmm no Google maps application on the n900 yet?

Ovi maps is better, hello? Or don't you know? Google maps via the web browser should be close to an app anyway.

No, not really. Try GMaps sometime on an 800x480 screen. You'll see what I mean.

Not to mention Google Maps has up to date POI and all. I heard Ovi Maps has outdated POI already..

On Symbian, I'm a user of Ovi Maps for voice guidance, but when I need POI's, I fire Google Maps, and export the points I've found to Ovi. Something like that would be needed on the N900, too.

Ovi Maps is great, I don't get why Nokia isn't giving Turn by Turn Voice Nav to the n900, that makes no sense to me.

What does that mean? Are you saying turn-by-turn isn't available at all? Or are you upset that you will have to pay for it?

Is there any chance of the maps software from OS2008 coming to N900 many of use paid for the 3 years of service and it would be nice to transfer that to the n900.

I agree... But I originaly paid for a "lifetime" license.

Also, service implies support. There has been no real updates or enhancements to the very stale GUI since I purchased it in May of 2007

I'm hoping that an increased customer base with the N900 will lead to:

1. More user defined plug-ins for gnuite's most excellent FOS MaemoMapper.

2. A more responsive software vendor like Garmin or TomTom will provide a more robust, fee based software.

A brief look at dpkg-repack on "maps" showed that there'd be issues around the GPS interface changing. However, a stub libgpsbt which bridged to the Fremantle APIs wouldn't be out of the reason of possibility.

Re: Request: Nokia Maps alternative for Maemo 5

Well, Ovi Maps probably has offline maps using SVG. But since there is 3G Maemo Mapper is now a more interesting alternative. Ofcourse you pay for turn-by-turn navigation. There is no free, good alternative for that.

My understanding was that it wasn't available at all, I don't mind paying for turn by turn, is it available as well?

Navit has been awesome for me, it's free and can be adapted to your needs.

I'd be happy having:

On it :) Even does TTS for turn by turn. As for POI. I generally don't follow those much ;)

So your saying its possible to load Os2008 Maps on Fremantle if some work was done. I really think it should be done since alot of us paid out big time for that navigation.

YoDude: Well UI hasn't changed which I don't mind much its a simple program but it works. Atleast we did get new maps last year.

Thanks

Re: Request: Nokia Maps alternative for Maemo 5

I think mapping software really has two major components.

1) Updated POI - People just use their mapping software because it puts things into a location aware content.
2) Turn-by-turn or good navigation interface - people wanting to know how to get from point A to point B.

Currently Google Maps is the leader for updated POI (at least for US). There is no current application (that I am aware of) that can provide the second piece of functionality.

I'm perfectly fine with having two different apps for those different pieces of functionality.

Google Maps is getting turn-by-turn directions for android 2.0.. I wonder how easy it would be to port it to Maemo

Very considering a good chuck of it will be written in Java ;)

Aha here's how it goes:

1) See a great open source project, Maemo Mapper
2) Hire the Maemo Mapper guy
3) ????
4) Release a product called "Android Mapper"
5) Profit!

Well I would have thought that the basic logic shouldn't have been too hard to sort, Java is a C style language so other than having to sort out memory managment it should be straight forward, though labourious, to port it to C++ and make it work faster too.

I concur and hope somebody from maemo developer community pick it up for porting sooner than later.

Re: Request: Nokia Maps alternative for Maemo 5

not to destroy anybody's hopes, but i doubt that we'll see a port of the google turn by turn navigation.
first, you need the source code. android is partly open source, yes, but i'm sure google keeps this one closed to have a competitive advantage. i searched a bit but couldn't find any licensing info on this. maybe someone has better information?
second, porting from java to c/c++ is a bit more involved than just having to sort out memory management. this application might depend on many dalvik-specific classes, which would have to be ported as well. you'd be opening a pandora's box of additional dependencies which would have to be sorted out...
it's probably easier to write a front-end application to maps.google.com which implements turn by turn navigation and relies on the google maps API.

I agree. The current version of maeMaps took only around 20-30 hours to develop, and already features Directions and GPS integration, with LocalSearch coming up soon.
One could probably parse the directions list and compare it to the GPS every 5 seconds to determine current route progress, then auto-pop the map detail and a large banner for the next turn.

Re: Request: Nokia Maps alternative for Maemo 5

Looking at https://garage.maemo.org/projects/maemo-mapper/ there is no "Mapper dude" but a team full of names. However, I asked yesterday Alberto Mardegan about the current status and basically he is the only one working right now, and he is trying to find the hours to optimize the UI to Maemo 5, after having integrated successfully Clutter in the application.

If you are interested please contact those guys directly or at lease offer your help inh the official Mapper thread since I don't think Mardegan & co are following this thread.

btw any news about Navit or QtMapper?

While we're talking about map apps, there is Emerillon (which is in the only-use-if-you-know-what-you're-doing extras-devel repo).

http://www.novopia.com/emerillon/

This uses libchamplain for a nice clutter map widget. Needs hildonisation, I'm getting there gradually, but patches welcome.

Thanks, I'm still trying to figure out Garage, I sent an email to marty, I think that was the name, asking if I could help out with the icons.

I'm not really a designer by trade, but I want to develop my skills, and since I love maemo and the n900, here seems like the perfect place. I'll try to get another 2 or 3 icons done for tomorrow.

The +/- layer styles may need to be tweaked still.
