Nokia N900 clarifications
Hey guys,
I like to ask some questions to the Maemo Community and the Nokia personnel around here that work on the N900. So here we go: 1. MMS will not be available from the beginning, possible due to the Linux/WAP kernel issue. But I need a CLEAR answer if MMS will come in the near future or not. 2. SMS Delivery Reports. Does the device support them? If not, are they coming? 3. Does a Birthday/Anniversaries entries from the Contacts gets display on Calendar? 4. Video Call. When the device will support Video Call over network? Also can we expect VoIP Video Call using Skype, Google Talk etc.? 5. What are the changes to see full vertical support for the whole menu and home-screens with a "Maemo 5.5" or any other similar update? |

the answer is apparently yes, birthday entries from the contacts gets displayed on the calendar. |

2. The people who know that are probably under NDA. 3. Looks like someone already answered. 4. There likely won't be any artificial restrictions on which apps can use which network connection. In Maemo4 we saw SIP Video and Gizmo Video, but not Skype. On Maemo5 we can assume at the very least SIP Video, but other than that, it's not clear yet. With that kind of power and the availability of GTalk video on the linux desktop the only thing that I'm not sure about happening eventually is Skype. 5. Unknown -John (doesn't work at Nokia) |

2) I think sms delivery was doable (at least with my operator) also with mobile phones not supporting it - by sending the message to a number in form *some_prefix#original_number (don't know the format exactly). Maybe also setting some bit in the sms packet is enough.. And as we have open source, I think this is also just a matter of software.. |

2. I have no idea what that means whatsoever, sorry. 3. Yes. 4. Yes, over Google Talk (if both clients support the same codecs/protocols) 5. Only those with direct access to the code can answer that question with the kind of accuracy you're asking for. |
Re: Nokia N900 clarifications
2) Think of it as a delivery receipt (since that's what it is). When an SMS is delivered to the destination phone you get a special message type back telling you that it was delivered. Very useful.

Re: Nokia N900 clarifications
as for question 4, when the OP repeated the question twice, I suspect he really wants to know whether n900 supports 3G video calls over cellular, not internet. (though both probably use IP?)

Re: Nokia N900 clarifications
"they" who ? Skype is not owned by Nokia. The N900 can't be more 'ahead' in that regard than the latest skype mobile version lets it to be.

As far as I know these kind of deals are partnerships. Hence, if Nokia wants more devices sold then killer software on them is a must (skype video or whatever your idea is..) while at the same time this provides Skype with some more potential users (if already a user then they can retain you). However, if your only going to sale 10,000 units then it won't be worth it to Skype to spend their energy on your device. Or who knows maybe Skype sales a license to Nokia for each unit. In sum, you need two sides to make a deal. |
Re: Nokia N900 clarifications
I have been using MSN Messenger/Windows Live Messenger for years, and most of my friends use that too. Is there no support for WLM in the standard software? What is the best third party app, of not? Is there no chance of getting video chat on WLM on Maemo?

As for video chat, the current version of telepathy-butterfly ready for MSN is 0.5.0 and video chat was added just the version after that. The guys working on bringing these additional chat protocols to Maemo 5 are aware and interested in getting it to work, however there's no way to predict when/if video chat over MSN will make it. More information coming when I get it. |
Re: Nokia N900 clarifications
Thanks for the info. I think I was chatting with you on IRC last night.
Is Telepathy what the Maemo Conversations app is based on? |

As far as I know the video conferencing over 3G for T-Mobile is blocked by the Provider not because the phone does not support it.

Speaking of MMS, has someone already linked to articles such as:
http://www.theiphoneblog.com/2009/01...ell-phone-mms/ ...and: http://basicstate.com/htm/page.htm Seems like working around a lack of integrated MMS is fairly straightforward. Tim |

It would be good, however, to view them directly from the phone itself. |
