What is bluetooth actually FOR??
I can pair my n810 to my friend's Blackberry, but THEN what? What can I actually DO with this bluetooth connection? What is it FOR??

Re: What is bluetooth actually FOR??
You can use it to transfer files between the two devices. If the blackberry has the required data plan and bluetooth profiles, you can use the blackberry as a modem for your n810 if you don't have access to a wireless connection.

Re: What is bluetooth actually FOR??
I do the following with bluetooth on my N810:
Tether to BlackBerry with data plan for internet anywhere. (I also connect to a desktop PC where I have no WiFi.) With PhoneLink, I can connect to my Razr phone to send/receive SMS messages, but I just use google voice for that now. I can also use that connection to dial a number via the Razr. I send pictures taken on my Razr to the N810 via BT. Not related to phones, but I have a BT stereo (A2DP) headset which I use with mplayer to watch video. Also not phone related, but with BlueMaemo, my N810 can function as a BT keyboard and mouse for any other computer. |

You can also use http://blueproximity.sourceforge.net/ on a host computer to lock a laptop's screen, change IM status, etc. Bluetooth's main purpose is for audio, however, file transfer works fine. Tethering works fine. Bluetooth keyboards work fine. There is a bluetooth joystick that [kinda] works with the tablets. You can do VNC over bluetooth if you so desire (pc connect manager)

Re: What is bluetooth actually FOR??
Bluetooth is basically a serial cable to connect devices wirelessly within a short range. There are several standardized profiles for connection types.
E.g. to connect headsets, networking, file transfer, input devices such as keyboard, mouse, game pads, etc. Not all devices support all profiles though. |

Things I currently do with bluetooth:

Re: What is bluetooth actually FOR??
Yep, all of the above, and you can also keep the company phone list in a .vcard file and bluetooth it over to your co-workers whenever they come with a new phone (which they do all the time..), and your friends with phones with nice cameras but tiny screens can bluetooth their pictures over to your N8x0 ("hey look, he's got a widescreen!" -- as I heard once).
And, for the cases I added above, there's no need to pair the devices. Just select and send. |

Re: What is bluetooth actually FOR??
What you can do depends on which Bluetooth protocols are supported on both devices. I've paired my N810 with a number of devices including my desktop and was able to get all to work. On my Desktop I had to install an ap to support obex ftp from the N810 to the Desktop. My Desktop is Ubuntu. Bluetooth is sometimes referred to as a PAN, Personal Area Network. Distance is limited to your immediate area.

Re: What is bluetooth actually FOR??
PAN is a bluetooth profile for running IP over bluetooth.

Re: What is bluetooth actually FOR??
Personally I use bluetooth to provide a radio link between various computers, carrying the Delay Tolerant Networking research group's Bundling Protocol (see RFC5050). The devices automagically detect each other and forward traffic towards its ultimate destination. The end to end path might include conveyance over Bluetooth, TCP/IP, AX.25 links using amateur radio equipment, and other assorted methods.
So, bluetooth is, in general, just another radio that you can do anything you like with. All that I've mentioned I can currently do on my N800, and I expect my N900 will do it too, although the USB host issues might cramp my style a bit. Hopefully I've broadened your horizons a little. |
Re: What is bluetooth actually FOR??
whenever i see a question like the OP, i am reminded of this:
http://www.frogdesign.com/case-study...s-concept.html sadly, it never got of the drawing table, as marketing/people wants "one brick to rule them all"... that and maybe also that companies love vertical integration, and must be dragged into any kind of true, open standard adherence... |
Re: What is bluetooth actually FOR??
I thought bluetooth replace ur white teeth.

but then i guess media file sizes outstripped bluetooths ability to carry them, and the low low price on chips hoped for never matrialized, so it never got built into random devices... i cant help wonder where we would have been if any digital camera came with a bluetooth radio... |
