As far as it's known, there's no Java on the N900.

There's however support for Javascript (not the same thing!) in the browser: this may be from where the confusion stems on other sites...

Java 6 is being ported to ARM.
http://www.arm.com/iqonline/news/partnernews/25603.html

Actually, seems it is available
http://java.sun.com/javase/embedded/...quirements.jsp

PS: The latter is new since august 2009. Quoting sun.com:

Re: No java still?

I don't see a reason why java wouldn't be possible on n900, as both java and n900 are open-source to a great degree..(and there also are completely open-source implementations of java)

even the j2me shouldn't be a problem...

and there also are open-source java virtual machine implementations available..

only someone has to get interested and port it... :)

Re: No java still?

If not exactly java, java-like JALIMO was there for the previous versions of maemo but not sure you can use it in maemo5. I also tried it in my n810 and was able to write programs and execute and this was about a year ago coz I stopped using it from the not-so-good feedback I got about it then. But I'm sure they have improved by now. Check this out: https://wiki.evolvis.org/jalimo/index.php/Maemo

Jalimo is Java (although based on OpenJDK, Classpath etc.). Progress is still slow, although performance is improving.

Is it possible to use j2me apps with Jalimo?

Yes, if you use MicroEmulator.

Quote:

MicroEmulator is a pure Java implementation of Java ME in Java SE. MicroEmulator is licensed under LGPL so it is possible to link and distribute commercial software with its libraries.
Here is article about this http://ldn.linuxfoundation.org/node/8409

Is there anyone here that could tell me if it would be able to run UptoDate?

For me, that's the only deciding factor on whether I'm going to pick one up or not.

Thanks!

You sure you don't mean Javascript? How does Java come into play on the web?

So if I use Micro Emulator do I need Jalimo to run J2me applications? or could I use the Micro Emulator with the Java SE for ARMv6 with my N810? I am interested in porting it. I have scratchbox and Freemantle SDK but I would need some guidance. thanks

Re: No java still?

Java is used on certain websites.
Facebook's photo upload for example.
Also certain corporate logins are Java-based.

It is a blunder of the internet to have so widely adopted Java applets and integrated Flash.

On the "desktop" side, there are bloated programs such as Azureus/Vuze.

openjdk is not acceptable substitution for Sun's jdk. Most embedded java applets such as facebook's simply won't load at all. It's about as useful as having Flash 9, when the website wants Flash 10.

If you think that's true, then start poking Sun, since there's no free "blessed" JDK for ARM other than OpenJDK. Which , fortunately, I'd expect to have nearly full compatibility with Sun's JDK since they're based in mostly the same code.

It is just a 30day evaluation version and does not work in scratchbox :(

Eew. that's horrible. I just got that posted to me when I complained in some other thread. Well perhaps it's coming. *fingers crossed*
