Maemo Community Council election: results are in!

Hi all,
The results of the Maemo Community Council are available - and we have a new Council. The Council for the coming 6 months will be:
  • Randall Arnold (Texrat)
  • Matthew Lewis(penguinbait)
  • Alan Bruce (qole)
  • Valerio Valerio (VDVsx)
  • Graham Cobb (gcobb)

You can see the details of the count at http://maemo.org/vote/results.php?election_id=7

Congratulations to all the successful candidates, and commiserations to all those who were not elected.

For anyone who wishes to double-check the election results, you can obtain a list of the votes at http://maemo.org/vote/votes.php?election_id=7 and you can download the ballots on OpenSTV format, and re-run the election count yourself, at http://maemo.org/vote/blt.php?election_id=7

Cheers,
Dave.

Total # of "first choice votes"

qole 66
Texrat 50
VDVsx 38
gcobb 37
penguinbait 37

lcuk 30
sjgadsby 15
AndrewFBlack 14
zerojay 11

Total # of votes received

qole 216
Texrat 199
lcuk 192
penguinbait 186
VDVsx 185

gcobb 183
sjgadsby 179
zerojay 158
AndrewFBlack 146

Its interesting to me, that the # of "first choice" votes match the winners. It bums me out that lcuk received the 3rd highest # of total votes yet did not get a seat on council. :(

The joys of STV - if you're always the 2nd or 3rd preference, and you don't get enough 1st choices, you're not going to get elected.

If you do the same test with just the 1st to 5th preference votes, how does it work out? (I haven't tried, just wondering).

Dave.

Re: Maemo Community Council election: results are in!

So totals of 1 through 5 are:

qole: 66 + 53 + 32 + 30 + 16 = 197
Texrat: 50 + 51 + 28 + 21 + 14 = 164
penguinbait: 37 + 34 + 32 + 21 + 17 = 141
lcuk: 30 + 21 + 30 + 28 + 31 + 140
VDVsx: 38 + 22 + 26 + 25 + 24 = 135

gcobb: 37 + 30 + 28 + 18 + 13 = 126
sjgadsby: 15 + 31 + 30 + 28 + 19 = 123
zerojay: 11 + 14 + 33 + 25 + 21 = 104
AndrewFBlack: 14 + 16 + 11 + 15 + 15 = 71

Looking at the preferences distribution, it's clear that lcuk was 3rd, 4th or 5th preference for a lot of people, but penguinbait, VDVsx and gcobb are all ahead of him in 1st and 2nd preferences - and those weigh more on the result than 4th or 5th preference.

Cheers,
Dave.

See, this is why we should have used the US electoral system that was in place from 2000-2008, where we held elections, but just made up the results.

Don't misunderestimate me, I'm not saying anything for or against those who won here... it's simply much funner that way.

Congratulations to everybody!

Dear lazyweb, how was the participation compared to previous votings? The merge with Talk can be seen now clearly in the results, but what about the universe of voters and the percentage of participation?

It was posted in another thread, that 303 ballots were cast, 298 of them were non-empty. Compared to I believe 162 voters last election.

I do not know how many eligible voters there was? (in either election)

1- Election-> 936 voters
2- Election -> 166 voters
3- Election -> 303 voters

So at least we did a lot better than Florida in the 2000 election :)

The new council should be named the Furry council.

Haha, congrats to everybody who are now on the council. :)

Edit: Interesting breakdown of the votes. I've always thought the European system (or the preference of this is the first, this is the second, etc..) is more fair than the USA's current all or none.

Yeah, the difference between parliamentarian style and ours is pretty stark. I'd actually like to try living under the former to see what it's like...

The bushy board?

Hopefully not the bristly board.

Congrats :)

Almost all voting methods currently in use suffer from problems such as tactical voting. [EDIT: I meant this in context of nations[/EDIT]

I wish I could. I would still be employed by Nokia if I could have relocated. Traveling is as close as I can get.

Remember what I said about not trusting people with a first name for their last name?
  • Randall Arnold (Texrat)
  • Matthew Lewis(penguinbait)
  • Alan Bruce (qole)
  • Valerio Valerio (VDVsx)
  • Graham Cobb (gcobb)

Looks like Graham is the only trustworthy one in the bunch :D

Valerio's name was so cool his parents had to use it twice.

Assuming his middle name is different.

Nobody told you that council members need to relocate to the maemo.org brand new offices at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Interna...urt_of_Justice ? This is why you all got the one way flight ticket to Amsterdam for free in the first place...

maemo.org is source of inspiration for many jokes flying in my mind and surroundings of my desk. Having a public role has certain weight and anyway most of the fun gets lost in translation. In my mother language it's not easy to connect 3 sentences without inviting to a smile.

Back to the topic. Ok we have numbers of actual voters but we still don't have numbers of potential voters so we don't know whether there is any trend in the participation?

The number of voters in each of the 3 elections is very different and I was trying to find a pattern.

Re: Maemo Community Council election: results are in!

The size of the 'real' voting body will be hard to determine as karma is timeless, so there are quite a lot of folks not much over the 10 karma line who no longer have an interest in Maemo (for example when I did a stat check back in July, there were ~500 active users on t.m.o. which is a LOT less than the number of registered folks with enough karma to vote).

There's http://wiki.maemo.org/Task:Community...ligible_voters for the first election (12287 voters). I can't find the lists for the other two, but dneary should have them somewhere.
