Can anyone recommend a screen protector?

I would like a removable screen protector. I am bad about scratching my phones and I really want to keep the screen in good shape.

Also a little about me, I am a long time Linux user (since 1999). Originally a programmer C, ASM, Pascal, Basic. Currently a server admin / mysql database guy. My current phone is an E90. The terminal will likely be my most used app on my N900.

Get a pack of Palm universal screen protectors, you probably will use 1 per year, but get something like that. Cut it to fit, and its great. Mine is going on two years of scratch saving. I'm getting ready to change it.

I could be wrong, but isn't it more convenient to change the touch frame when it's in a bad shape? For example for Nokia 5800 changing the touch frame costs about €20 (if I remember the price correctly) and they can do it fairly fast too.

Here is the link for the spare part for 5800 (they don't yet have it for N900):

Re: Can anyone recommend a screen protector?

how about carrying case CP-321?

if one stops to think a moment about the fact that where will the screen be scratched, this should be the solution. atleast with my e71 the stratches started to appear after the almost similar carrying case included was rendered useless (the red velvet started wearing off and started gluing the phone with its glue)

i bet only few of us will do kinetic scrolls when display is covered in sand but a lot of us will throw the device into pocket that could have metal pins and other stuff inside (jeans...)

Just out of the curiosity, I went and grabbed an unused iPhone 3G anti-glare screen protector and I think it'll work just fine.

At first I thought the circle at the bottom would be a problem but it's not, the circle button has it's own little piece which you can easily leave in circle thus covering the entire face. Since the iPhone is 3.5"--same as the N900 I don't see any problems ( will have to play around with it once I get it ) plus for people who have the iPhone will agree with me that the anti-glare protector is nice in covering up fingerprints.

Just my 2 cent....

From what I could figure, the screen size of iphone is slighly wider than N900, but thats just me.
I would suggest you wait a bit more as there will be tailored screen protectors in the market once the phone is out, this year or next !
3.5 inch is the diagonal , but screens can be more sqaurer or more rectangular which changes the length and width. Like N97 also has a diagonal size of 3.5 inch but its certainly smaller than the N900 screen which has the same diagonal size.

About the iphone protector, its recommended you use only one to protect your screen of the N900, you dont want to cover the vga camera or the proximity sensor ;)

I emailed Boxwave to see if I could preorder a N900 ClearTouch™ Anti-Glare

Some information on screen protector types is available on the wiki.

I really love the Boxwave Anti-Glare, hopefully they'll have an N900 version out soon.

Is the Anti-Glare or Crystal Clear ClearTouch screen protector better for use with this type of phone?

The iPhone screen protector covers the proximity sensor and it still works just fine...

I prefer the Anti-Glare, personally. Much more usable outdoors and the texture is more of a plasticy paper. It's much less prone to fingerprinting.

I'd say anti-glare, since it'll help hide the finger prints, whereas the crystal clear you'll still see them all over.

It seems quite weird that they say that you can wash them.

i have been using bodyguardz.com. you can even buy protector for the whole phone including screen. I always use it so that by the time I get tired of the phone, when I sell it looks brand new still! :)

recently i used it on nokia n97 and samsung omnia, which are both touchscreens and they're pretty good.

can anyone give a useful comment on how the responsiveness of the screen is affected by a screen protector?

since its pressure what induces the connection made in the resistive screen it shouldnt make any difference.. should it?

I don't notice any real difference withe Boxwave Anti-Glare on either my 770 or my N800s.

Re: Can anyone recommend a screen protector?

Hi All,

Firstly, I notice the Boxwave site is USD based. Anyone know any UK distributors?

Also, with regards to the washable screen protector, I had one once for a phone of mine years back. It was weird how it worked, when it got a little dirty (sometimes got dust underneath it!!) you just ran it under luke warm water and leave it to dry and it still stuck on the screen after!

Only problem was the one I purchased ended up getting too dusty (I was too lazy to wash it!) and came off when putting it in/out of my pocket and I lost it!

When I get my N900 (preordered from MBP! can't wait!) I'm not sure whether to get a case or a screen protector, I think a case might make it too big, since it's already a fairly sizable device.

Jason404 2009-10-03 08:07

Re: Can anyone recommend a screen protector?

Are there no bubbles when using these washable protectors? I cannot imagine them as being 'invisible'.

I am thinking of getting one of those Boxwave protectors, if they are available in the UK. But are they invisible?

I have never used a screen protector before. Some people keep those thin plastic films that come on screens, laptops and AV equipment. I think they are crazy. But the N900 looks susceptible to damage.

I am getting this case:
http://europe.nokia.com/find-product...for-nokia-n900

...and might get a screen protector as well, if somebody can confirm that they are in fact invisible when applied. I guess that applying it when the phone is brand new will lead to the best results.

I suppose it is unlikely that the screen can be easily replaced on this phone? Does anybody know? If it is, I will not bother with a screen protector.

Re: Can anyone recommend a screen protector?

I've used an EXiM screen protector on my Palm Treo 750 for nearly 3 years and never had a problem. Before that, I used an EXiM screen protector on my XDA Mini II.

The difference with those phones was the screen was recessed, not flush, so you could never touch the edge of the screen protector and potentially lift it.

Not sure how things work with a flush screen and a screen protector on top..... especially with the N900's "mouse cursor" mode ???

Re: Can anyone recommend a screen protector?

To answer a couple of questions quickly:

- I have the Boxwave Crystal on my N800. The screen looks very clear, I can't even tell that there is a screen protector on there.

- There is no difference in responsiveness, if you are using a stylus or pointing with your finger. There is some awkwardness when swiping with your finger (e.g., kinetic scrolling). This is a concern of mine about using a screen protector on the n900 since there is a lot of finger swiping involved in manipulating the UI, but I would rather keep the screen protected.

Planning to get a new screen is not going to be a timely solution. Even if you're in warranty the phone will probably be gone for a couple of weeks. If it's not in warranty it might be at least hundred bucks to replace. I'm also doubtful that the screen would be replaced under warranty due to "normal wear and tear" which is what most scratches would probably be.

It doesn't hurt to spend $30 bucks and try a couple of different screen protectors to see if you like any of them. If you don't like it, take it off.

I've had an n800 for about 2 years now, and despite probably the hundreds of times I've dropped or thrown it (thrown like bag not thrown like baseball) the screen hasn't broken. Expect longevity from the screen.

Re: Can anyone recommend a screen protector?

I have a question about a screen protector for the N900 that I havent seen addressed, according to the user manual (I know it may not be final) it says not to cover the proximity sensor with anything. Will a screen protector covering the entire face affect it, as I dont want to only have the face partially covered and be able to see a line, id just as soon use none at all if thats the case.

pelago 2009-10-03 20:46

Re: Can anyone recommend a screen protector?

I'm interested in the answer to that as well. Does the manual for the iPhone (or any other phone that has a proximity sensor) also say not to cover the proximity sensor, and if so, has anyone covered theirs with no ill effects?

Re: Can anyone recommend a screen protector?

Perfect idea, until someone actually comes out with a screen protector made specifically for this phone just leave the factory screen plastic on. To this day I still have the factory plastic on my E90 that came on the screen of the phone, and it's protecting it just fine.

I'm sure it'll work out till someone comes out with one specifically built for the N900

difference is if i see it correctly:

80 ct. vs 8 pounds.

cheaper one:
no self healing abilities
no simple bubble free application
Extremely fine, other one does not state so

Seems specially made for the N900.

I don't know why people keep thinking the proximity sensor needs to be cut out. It's not on the iphone and I'm using the darker anti-glare, and the phone works just fine.

So does the iPhone one too--when the girl at the Apple store put it on, she did't say anything about cutting out the proximity. Nor have I cut it out the last four times I've replaced it, and it works just fine. So unless this sensor is like ******ed or something... ;)

first, i bet you don't know the way the sensor functions, do you?

e: because if you did, you would understand why it may be crucial to keep its area clear from screen protectors.

second, this is not iphone, and proximity sensor isn't a proximity sensor. constructions wary and so on...

e: sorry, wtf proximity? just read this again and i am totally out now. what would n900 do with proximity sensor?
